The decision to write about Dicken s A Christmas Carol was an easy one for me. Although many of the works I had to choose from included messages about how we should live, A Christmas Carol is a story entirely about this issue. So I figured much could be drawn from a story so pertinent to the topic. I also feel that Dickens makes a specific and interesting point about the place of the individual in the world. The outline of the story can be summarized best in terms of the visitations Scrooge experiences. The first such visitation is from Scrooges deceased business partner Jacob Marley.

The visit by Marley is followed by three ghosts which each come separately to give a different message. They are the ghosts of Christmas Past, Christmas Present, and Christmas Future. Each of them gives Scrooge unique insight that leads Scrooge to his final state, that is one of repentance. Jacob Marley is the first ghost to visit Scrooge, he tells Scrooge of his present situation.

He tells of how he is presently imprisoned. It is required of every man that the spirit within him should walk abroad among his fellow men, and travel far and wide; and if that spirit goes not fourth in life, it is condemned to do so after death. It is doomed to wander through the world This is a reasonably good summary of Dickens message in A Christmas Carol. Of course, it does not sink in to the mentality of the money hungry Scrooge and it is necessary for the three sprits to come and visit Scrooge.

The Ghost of Christmas Past comes first. She brings Scrooge back to past Christmas where Scrooge can see himself as a different man, the man he was before money corrupted him. He sees a Past Christmas where he is talking to the woman of his affections and she is telling him that money has changed him. He is shown the happiness of her family with the man she married.

This man could ve been Scrooge if it wasn t for his greed. He is being shown the root of his problem, which of course lies in his past. This is an important statement in itself, that the past can corrupt the future and we shouldn t grow old when we grow up. We shouldn t abandon the values we held important in the past The Ghost of Christmas Present comes next. He is in many ways the ideal which Scrooge and all of mankind should do our best to emulate. He tells scrooge that he will give To any kindly Given.

To a poor one most. To this Scrooge asks Why to a poor one most? and hears the spirit reply Because it needs it most. This is an important concept, that the poor should be treated with generosity and not with cruelty, as Scrooge treats them. Considering the spirit as a model it can be said that we should all act as the spirit does; with generosity, kindness, and respect for all as humans, regardless of social status. The Ghost of Christmas future comes next.

His purpose is to reinforce what the other ghosts helped scrooge to learn. It is to him that Scrooges final promises to repent and change his ways are made. Dickens message can be seen clearly in the messages that were given to Scrooge. In some way, we are all like Scrooge, although we may not hoard our fortunes or be difficult landlords we could all be more kind to those around us. However I don t think that simple generosity and caring is all of Dickens message. This book makes a statement about how we all fit into the grand scheme of life.

Dickens evil ways affected not him but those around him. He is told by Marley that his actions will indeed affect him in the afterlife, as Marley s past actions have imprisoned him. But the afterlife is obviously after the fact. In the present generosity and kindness will connect us to others like cruelty and greed does not.

When we make others happy we will be given back that happiness ten fold. This is seen in the family of scrooges past love and in the happiness of Fezzywhig, to name a few examples. Where as when we oppress others we will not be ourselves oppressed. This is the message about life that A Christmas Carol relays so classically through a story about one man whose life can be in some way equated to all of us.
