The title of the book refers to a song Holden heard from a little boy. One line says: If a body meets a body coming through the rye. Holden thought it was If a body catches a body He pictures himself catching children who are playing in a rye-field. The Catcher in the Rye is a story about the thought and opinions of an emotionally disturbed young sixteen-year-old boy named Holden Caulfield who runs away from school because he was expelled, and meets people who only annoy him. The story begins and ends in the mental hospital or resting home as he calls it. Holden is telling this story as a monologue, the book describes Holden's thoughts and activities over four days, during which he is developing a nervous breakdown.

Symptomized by his bouts of unexplained depression, impulsive spending, he has generally odd, erratic behavior, prior to his eventual nervous collapse. Holden Caulfield is a 16 -year-old boy that finally understands running away didnt solve a thing. He is known for getting expelled a lot and went to many schools. Holden is a young boy trying to grow up in an adult world, and trying to show that he is an adult. As Holden is learning, there are many depressing things in the world. Holden, being the idealist that he is, searches to find everything that needs to be changed, but never gives an alternative to the situation any solution on how to change it.

In the four total days that the story covers, Holden ends up getting himself from Peace Preparatory School to New York City where he and his sister meet. He tries to shelter Phoebe from the world by not letting her do things that he is doing. In a sense, So in a sense, Holden is a hypocrite, by doing particular things and then turning around and telling her not to do them. After wandering in the city for a while he decides to go back to Phoebe and she convinces him to stay.

He then went to a rest home for psychological treatment where the story begins. The story ends as Holden is talking to a doctor as if he were telling this whole story to the doctor. This is a symbolic ending to this story, because Holden always thought that he didnt need to share his depressing stories with other people and he didnt like other people, tell him their depressing stories This was a very thought-provoking novel and a fascinating and enlightening description of human behavior. Progressively through the novel, one challenge is to think about society's attitude to the human condition. The Catcher in the Rye is in fact a perceptive study of one individuals understanding of his human condition. This emotionally disturbed boy had a sense of emptiness and isolation that characterizes his own human existence.

We can all see within ourselves some suppressing elements of the emotions operating within Holden Caulfield. He noticed everyone and forgot no one, as he misjudged all too quickly. One lesson all of us should learn, we are too quick to criticize and to slow to praise. With these things in mind, there are many ideas that are developed throughout the story both idealistic and irrational that can be examined. By J.
