English Final Exam The Catcher In The Rye 1. Is Catcher optimistic or pessimistic? Cosmic or tragic? Does Salinger present Holden as rejecting his entire society?

If so, does Salinger's tone imply that Holden acted correctly in rejecting it? If you feel that Salinger does not present Holden as rejecting his society, then what specific aspect of it does Holden appear to you to accept? Answer: I contemplate that Catcher has great evidence of pessimism and tragedy. I have such a belief because throughout the story Holden is quite morbid during his journey of reality.

Evidence of this pessimism, is when Holden is so miserable that he believes, at one point, that he has cancer. Indication of tragedy, is Holden's loss of innocence, and realization of reality. Furthermore I believe that Holden rejects his society. I think that Salinger's tone does demonstrate that Holden was acting correctly throughout his whole phase due to his positive output writing as Holden. Salinger made Holden's thoughts always completely certain about himself. As an example of this is when Holden rejected the people in his school for being phonies.

However, Holden believing that, never once turned back from his thoughts and made exceptions. This shows how Salinger truly believed that it was the right act to do and their werent any exceptions. Being certain of himself showed how rejection was the proper act to carry out. 2. Although Holden maintains that he is sort of an atheist he at one time felt like praying or something (page 91) He later implies that the ostentatious commercial parading of actors carrying crucifixes and stuff during Radio Citys Christmas season is sacrilege. As specifically as possible, try to define Holden's attitude toward Christianity?

Toward organized religion in general? Toward the possibility of mans having a valid spiritual life? Answer: Holden isnt certain about his religious beliefs. I imagine that Holden would convert to Christianity, if it werent for the portrayal of the religion by media and publicity as shown in Radio City.

He feels that the media mocks the religion, and doesnt want to be part of the charade. That is why he says he is atheist even though inside he would like to be a non-phony Christian. Holden is only thinking about Christianity, because it is the dominant religion, in the society in which he lives. However if Holden were to live in another society with a different prominent religion, he would see this religion as he sees Christianity in the present time. That is why I believe that Holden would look upon other organized religions, in the same fashion as Christianity even if he never speaks about others religions in the book.

Holden probably thinks that to have a spiritual life, is precious, because it allows a person to keep what Holden keeps at heart, innocence. Having this spiritual life allows them to be secure with their innocence and always to have someone by their side. 3. What is the theme of The Catcher in the Rye? Answer: The theme of this story, is the transition of a child going from innocence to reality. The story revolves around Holden's life, and transformation.

Every aspect of the story has an impact on Holden's innocence and reality. Therefore, innocence and reality are the main focus points proposed by J. D Salinger. In the story every element revolving around Holden depicts a rise or fall. As an element in the story is the baseball glove of Holden's dead brother, which represents a catcher trying to save the children from falling into reality. Even the smallest things in the novel demonstrate some type of rising or falling action as shown with the glove.
