Catcher In the Rye Question 3 Throughout ones life a person comes in contact with many people. Many times the relationships a person has with another can reveal traits about them. In the book The Catcher In The Rye, by JD Salinger, Holden has many relationships with different people. His relationships with Mrs. Morrow and Sally Hayes reveal his insecurity and his phoniness. Holden reveal his insecurity and phoniness in his relationship with Mrs.
Morrow. Holden meets her on a train and has a lengthy conversation with her in which he constantly lies. He tells her that he has aquired a brain tumor and lies about Mrs. Morrows son being a well to do student at Peace. His insecurity is shown by the fact that he is not comfortable saying the truth to her. He is afraid tat if he tells her the truth about his life she would not be interested.
Phoniness is revealed in his relationship with Mrs. Morrow by the fact that he isn t his true self around her. He acts the way he thinks would be most pleasing to her. The author uses irony in this part of the book by making Holden act phony around a stranger when he hates phonies and is always accusing people of being phony.
In Holden's relationship with Sally Hayes as in his relationship with Mrs. Morrow he reveals his insecurity and phoniness. Holden doesnt really like Sally to begin with but pretends he does because he thinks she is good looking. His phoniness is exposed by such things as when he asks Sally to marry him. He does not really like her but fakes it to the extreme and tells her he loves her and wants to marry her. His insecurity becomes obvious with the situation with Sally's s old friend at the play.
Holden becomes extremely jealous even though the boy was not tring to take Sally away from him. For example Holden says Why don t you go on over and give him a big soul kiss if you know him. He ll enjoy it. This shows, in Holden's point of view, how he is insecure with himself and views the other boy as a threat to his relationship with Sally. He is insecure with himself because he worries so much about the other kid being better than he is. In life one may have many different kinds of relationships with numerous different people.
Many times personal traits are revealed through the relationships people have.
