The novel The Catcher In The Rye was written by J. D Salinger. The whole story revolves around one character, Holden Caufeild. He is a fifteen or 16 -year-old boy, who tells a story in the third person to the reader. Holden is a character who suffers from low self-esteem, is a judgmental and a dishonest person.
These points will be proven through the following characters: Stradlater, Ackley, and Mrs. Morrow. Holden is a person with low self-esteem and will do anything Stardlater tells him to do. Holden was friends with a girl named Jane.
She was a person who he cared for and respected. After being informed by Stardlater of his date with her, Holder was crushed. He didn t want a jerk, like he described, going on a date with her. Stardlater being a person who doesn t really care about the feelings of other girls, and just wants to show them the time. Holden hated him for that. Nevertheless, when Stradlater asked him to do his descriptive paragraph for him, he says yes: Then when he was taking off his tie, he asked me if I d written his goddam composition for him, I told him it was over on his goddam bed. (p This quote shows the anger that Holden has for Stradlater.
This quote is relevant because it shows that he would do anything to be liked by the more popular people at his school. This is a sign of his loneliness. He staying home on a Saturday proves this and doing Stradlater s homework, while he is out with a girl that Holden is crazy about. In conclusion, Holden has a low self-esteem.
From that, his judgmental side will be shown. Throughout the whole book, Holden always judges Ackley in a negative way. This occurs when Ackley was first introduced. Holden comments of him were negative, making remarks on his facial flaws and also saying that he has no friends That guy had everything.

He doesn t want to believe that his social life is as bad as Ackley s. He puts him down to try and make himself look more popular to the reader. Holden is a very judgmental person.
He is also very dishonest. Holden Caufeild is a dishonest person. After leaving Peace and getting on a train to New York, Holden meets the mother of a fellow classmate. He has a conversation with her, and whenever she asked him a question, he would answer with a lie. Whether it was about his name or her son, he would answer with a lie: May I ask you name dear? He adapts himself very well to things. (pg 54 - 55) Holden is a compulsive liar because he doesn t like facing the reality of his life, which is being a failure. Instead of facing reality and his problems, he turns his back to it and makes a new reality. Holden is a very dishonest boy. In conclusion, Holden is a dishonest person. This is proved through the character of Mrs. morrow.
He is a person with low self-esteem. Revealed through the character of Stradlater. And through Ackley, a judgmental side shows. However, in the end, Holden is just a boy who is struggling to reach manhood.
