CATCHER IN THE RYE ESSAY If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you want to know is what this lousy essay is about. Well this essay is about a boy named Holden who was a key character in the novel The Catcher in the Rye by J. D. Salinger. He is thought as a psycho. Holden s character is really unique for many reasons.

There are also many differences in his relationships with women and men. He also has a problem with society and adjusting to it. To understand Holden, his character must be closely examined. Holden, who is thought of as a psychological outcast, possesses conflicts with society, relationships with males and females, and with himself.

His character is a real unique feature, which makes Holden such an interesting character; he is really judgmental towards everyone he meets. Then he started telling us how he was never ashamed, when he was in some kind of trouble or something, to get right down on his knees and pray to God That killed me. I can see the big phony bastard shifting into first asking Jesus to send a few more stiffs (16 - 17). This is when an alumnus of Peace Prep gives a speech and Holden is completely judging him and making remarks about him. This is very typical of Holden; in many cases he passes judgment on people. Later in the book he again displays this trait of his when he is badmouthing one of his roommates, whose name is Ackley.

He really thinks very little about Ackley and is always making fun of him like for example every time he talks to him he calls him Ackley kid. This quote also shows him making fun of Ackley, He has a terrible personality. He was also sort of a nasty guy (19). This is Holden describing Ackley for the first time to the readers.

Not only is he judgmental, but he also has many different disputable views on relationships with both men and women. Holden judges males and females using totally different standards. When he judges a woman, his priorities are completely cosmetic. He displays this in this quote She gave me a pain in the ass, but she s very good looking (110). Holden is describing a girl with whom he went out with and openly says he only likes her for her looks. When he is with his female friends he really seems to be focused on getting sex.

When he is with his male friends he only brags about getting some from girls. He judges his male friends mainly on their abilities on getting girls. An example would be how Holden talks about Stradlater. He admires him for his smoothness with the ladies and can t really tolerate anything else he does. Hell no!

I told, I m through with that pig. Yeah? Give her to me, boy. No kidding she s my type. (30). This is when Stradlater is shaving and getting ready to go out and is talking about one of his ex-girlfriends. It demonstrates the mentality of Holden when he says Yeah give her to me boy.

Then again isn t that the mentality of almost all males? So when you think about it his relationships with men and women are pretty normal when compared to today s standards. Holden struggles with many things due to his failure to conform to societies expectations Society was very hard for Holden to fit in to. Holden is very much an innocent adolescent trying to get through life. He approaches many conflicts when he leaves Penny Prep. A main conflict would be when he pays a hooker five dollars to not have sex with him.

It makes me sad as hell-I don t know why exactly (96). This shows Holden s innocent nature when he feels sorry and depressed for the hooker. Another time were Holden shows his innocence and his helpful nature is when he approaches 2 nuns. When he sees them he gives them ten dollars and this is yet another testament of his generosity. This goes against the standards of the society set forth for Holden. Almost any man would have taken advantage of the Hooker and would have collected from her.

He shows genuine care for people when he donates money to the nuns. This is how Holden goes against and doesn t accept the standards of society. Holden, who is thought of as a psychological outcast, possesses conflicts with society, relationships and with himself. Holden has a very independent and judgmental character.

He also has different relationships with men and women, He also looks for different things in men than in women. This has also demonstrated that Holden isn t really a nut case he has an even less crazy personality than most people. This book shows many things about society, but the main point is to show how judgmental people are towards other people who go against the expectations of society.
