The Catcher Holden Caulfield is thrown out of Pency Prep and forced either to go home or to fend for himself in the adult world. Holden narrates J. D. Salinger s The Catcher In The Rye from first-person point of view. He struggles internally with the death of his brother. Also, he struggles externally while trying to find his place in the world.

The story begins around Christmas at Pency Prep High School in Agerstown, Pennsylvania. It was a Saturday afternoon, and Holden was on his way to see Mr. Spencer. Ever since the death of his brother, Allie, Holden has a hard time becoming close with anyone.

The story revolves around Holden after he is kicked out of Pency Prep. He constantly makes comments about how depressed he is and how he wishes he was dead. Holden is a tall, skinny, sixteen year old male with a extremely bad habit of lying. He lies about anything and everything. He is not responsible, and he often acts immature. Also, he is a heavy smoker, which causes him to never have any wind, and drinker.

He has some gray hair in his crew cut which seems to be attributed to his constant stress. As Holden tries to fit into the adult world by himself, he soon realizes that his family are the only ones there for him. I really liked Holden because I can relate to many of the struggles he went through. For example, he was trying to find who he really was, and I often ask myself who I really am.

Phoebe Caulfield is another important character in the story. She is the ten year old sister of Holden. She seems to be the main reason that Holden decides to come back home in the end. She plays a minor yet important role in the story. Also, Phoebe tells her brother that she loves him and that he should come home.

However, if Holden is not willing to come home, she is willing to run away with him. Holden tell us that she is a smart, talkative, extremely emotional, caring, and loving sister. Although, she can be snotty at some times. During the middle of the night, Holden comes home to say good bye to his sister before leaving, hoping he will not have to see his parents.

While he is talking to her, he starts to smoke. Suddenly, the mother comes home and goes to Phoebe s room. Instead of ratting Holden out, she takes the rap for him. Phoebe was the first in the family to realize that Holden was kicked out of Pency.

In the end, she is more or less a static character. If it wasn t for Phoebe, Holden would be a mess. I liked Phoebe because she seems to be the only one who really cares for Holden, and she reminds me a lot of my sister. Also, Mr. and Mrs. Caulfield are important characters in the story.

They are the parents of Holden, Phoebe, D. B. , and Allie. They seem to love their children as most parents do. However, after the death of Allie, it seems they have not paid enough attention to Holden. Holden was kicked out of at least three schools, and they keep sending him off to another school. While, what they really need to do is help their child out with the difficulties he is going through.

Sure they send him presents and things like that, but that s not enough. Mr. Caulfield is a wealthy lawyer, and he is often away from the family on business. For example, he is not able to attend Phoebe s play. Ms.

Caulfield hasn t been the same since the death of their youngest son Allie. She is constantly nervous and has terrible headaches. She can t even sleep well without waking up at the drop of a hat. Holden never once tells us that his parents love him. Although, we can see in the story that the mother cares for Phoebe when she comes in after the party to tuck her in.

The parents seem to be dramatic characters because they change greatly after the death of Allie. Also, the parents are extremely touchy. Overall, I thought the parents were basically good people, but I thought they should pay more attention to Holden to help him overcome his problem. The death of Allie is an important conflict in the story. The brother died one summer from Leukemia in Maine. Holden was only thirteen at the time.

He was only two years younger than Holden, and they were very close. Allie was the most intelligent, not to mention kind, member of the family. Holden didn t know how to handle his brothers death. On the day of Allie s death, Holden not only broke all the windows in the garage, but he also slept in the garage that night. His parents wanted to have him psychoanalyzed. From that point on Holden is confused and not sure of himself.

His fear of losing any more people that he loves is evident as he shuns getting to close to other people. Also, Mr. and Ms. Caulfield become indifferent after Allie s death. In fact, their concern for Holden is less and less. Holden doesn t feel that his parents love him because they really don t seem to notice Holden s grief, or maybe they re just as distraught.

As a result, he feels even more isolated. For not only doesn t he have his brother to turn to anymore, he doesn t feel he can turn to his parents either. So he decides to head out on his own instead of looking to his family for help. Another important scene was when Holden was thrown out of Pency Preparatory. Since he was failing all classes but English, they told him not to return after Christmas break.

It was a Saturday, and Holden had to wait until Wednesday to go home. This was the original plan anyway. Earlier that night his roommate Stradlater had a date with Jane Gallagher which made him jealous because he used to really like her. When he came home, Holden got into a little argument with him. Then, he started to call Stradlater a moron, and Stradlater repeatedly told him to knock it off. Finally, Stradlater punched him right in the face.

Then, Holden went to the next room to talk to Ackley. When he was speaking with Ackley, he began to feel extremely alone. Actually, he wished he was dead. He then decided that no one cared about him anymore. So, he was going to head on his own to New York.

By leaving Pency and trying to survive on his own, Holden was faced with many conflicts. If he would of stayed at Pency, Holden probably wouldn t have had the problems he later faced. The climax of this story has to be when Holden tells Phoebe he is going to run away at the end of the book. While experiencing life on his own, Holden faces many horrible problems, which lead him to believe he is all alone. He decides that heading to a cabin out west would be a good start. He tells Phoebe to meet him at the museum during her lunch break.

She comes to meet Holden with her suitcases packed. She tells Holden that she is coming with him. When he told her she couldn t, she began to cry. Then, Holden leaves, and she follows him down to the zoo. Although, she stays on the other side of the street the whole way. Finally, they arrive at the zoo.

When he gets to the carousel inside the zoo, he buys Phoebe a ticket. He begins to remember all the good times he, Allie, D. B. , and Phoebe used to have. When the ride was over, she came over towards Holden and gave him a kiss. Then, she told him she wasn t mad at him anymore. In other words, in a strange way Holden realizes that maybe his family does love him.

Ultimately, he finally decides to go home because he realizes that his family is all that he has. J. D. Salinger is trying to tell teenagers that their family is actually there for them. No matter how horrible or tough a situation may be, we can always look to our family for help.

Often, I feel alone in life. But, probably this is part of growing up and finding one s place in life. In turn, I am able to look to my family for support which allows me to overcome the challenges I face. If it wasn t for the love and support of my family, I would be a mess.

If Holden had only known that his family was there for him, he surely wouldn t have had to go through many of the problems which he did. It seems as if the author is trying to show society the thoughts of teenagers. In turn, he is telling us that parents need to be more involved in the lives of their children. I loved this book. This was the second time I read it which made it even better. I often face many problems similar to Holden s, and this book helps me to realize what the correct choices should be in these situations.

Also, I could barely put the book down. On every page there is something more interesting than the last. I would definitely recommend this book to others, especially my friends. I hope by reading this they will be able to realize how important their family really is. Overall, this is probably my favorite piece of literature of all
