The Joy Luck Club By Amy Tan In the last two chapters of part two of the novel the narrators are the daughters of An-mei Hsu Jordon and Susan Woo. The daughters of the Joyluck mothers narrate all of the second part of the novel. The daughters tell some of the same stories but from their point of view. In the third part of the novel, Queen Mother Of the Western Skies, the mothers tell their stories, which show their point of views.

The author wrote this novel in sections so that the reader can get a better understanding the American daughters, and compare them to their Chinese mothers, and therefore showing the similarities and differences. At the beginning of the novel the mothers and daughters seem to be very different, in culture and thinking. They are different because they grew up in different places (China and America). Their thinking and traditions are very different, the authors shows this throughout the novel.

An example of this is how the mothers believe in lots of symbolisms and superstitions. Their daughters have grown up in a totally different country and therefore have different beliefs. They dont really believe all the things that their mothers say, mostly because they dont really understand what their saying. One of the main themes in this novel is the theme of miscommunication.

Due to the cultural differences between the mothers and daughters they have difficulties communicating to each about what the think and feel. The daughters are in between two cultures; they are neither fully Chinese nor American. They are a part of both, while their mothers are fully Chinese. The daughters must find a way to understand their mothers and understand the many things they dont actually come out and say, but expect is heard. On the other hand the mothers must find a way to listen to their daughters and understand their thinking and realize that they are different, and yet the same. Throughout the novel the author shows this process of understanding and awareness.

Each of Joy luck mothers have made great sacrifices for their daughters as their mothers did for them. This is shown in the last part of the novel where the mothers are the narrators. Each one tells her own tragic story of how they have, in one way or another, sacrificed themselves for their daughters. The mother of An Mei's mother who killed herself in order to improve the lives of her two children shows the ultimate sacrifice. Although these are tragedies it follows the theme of love because it shows the powerful love that the mothers have for their daughters and how they are willing to do anything for their happiness. All the characters in the novel are trying to overcome some kind of obstacle.

For Jing Mei it was to find out more about her mother and find a way to grieve for her mother. At the end of the novel she is reunited with her mothers daughters and she feels complete, and finally finds a way to cope with her lose. This is shown when it says, Her same eyes, her same mouth, open in surprise to see, at last, her long-cherished wish. (P. 332) This shows that Jing-mei is coping with her lose because she has found a way to fulfill her mothers wish, which was to find her daughters. By finding her sisters, Jing Mei finds her long lost family and gets a better understanding of who her mother was. In the last part of this novel the author shows that although the mothers and daughters are very different from one another that they are also very much the same.

The beginning of the novel is based on showing the many differences and misunderstandings between mother and daughter. In the last few chapters the message is different. The author successfully shows that they are very much alike even thought they are so different. This is shown when Lindo Jong says, These two faces, I think, so much the same! The same happiness, the same sadness, the same good fortune, the same faults. (P. 292) Lindo Jong realizes that she is more like her daughter then she thought. She looks are her daughter and sees her faults and therefore seeing her own.

This follows the theme of self-realization in the novel because by looking at her daughter and her ways she sees herself when she was her age. Due to this realization she begins to understand her daughter better because she sees herself in her. In the last part of the novel, the author brings all the pieces of the novel together so that everything that was said makes sense. The novel is written in a series of flashbacks. The story moves from the past to present, and from narrator to narrator, and therefore making the novel somewhat harder to follow.

Although this kind of writing is not that common, in this novel it is very effective. The reader gets the point of view from all the characters in the novel, and because of this gets a better understanding of the messages that the author is conveying the to reader.
