Life has always had its way of building people up only to tear them down. In the story, The Story of an Hour, Mrs. Mallard dies an upset woman. Having a bad heart condition Mrs.
Mallard is told very sensitively that her husband has been killed in a train wreck. After weeping once she cries no more and retires to her bedroom. She soon feels someone or something is possessing her body and is fearful. However, realizing this feeling is good she soon feels "Free! Free!
Free!" and her vacant ness disappears. She sees years to come that will be hers and she will have all the time in the world to herself. Her sister is making a "racket" of her becoming ill if she stays cooped up in her room so she gives in and goes down stairs. As she is descending the stairs someone opens the door and there stands her husband, being in shock and utterly disappointed at her faltered future plans she dies in anger. In this story Mrs.
Mallard is "built up" because she is in a way happy to hear the news of her husbands death. She is also "torn down" because the minute the door opens all her plans for the future went chaotic. Mrs. Mallard dies upset because she never really felt as if her husband loved her. She was not sure either if she really loved him, she had a debate with herself if she even loved him sometimes. She longed so much to be free and her own being and would have accomplished just that if her husband had indeed been dead.
Mrs. Mallards life definitely had its ups and downs but in the end she got what she had always desired life (or death, in this case) with out her husband. Bibliography:
