World War I was the first major war in which virtually every country took part. Because of the large number of countries involved in this war, there were many casualties by the time everything returned to normal. This war had a long lasting impact on just about everything. During the four years of the war (1914 - 1918) the number of known dead has been placed at approximately 10, 000, 000 and about 20, 000, 000 wounded. (Langer) Although the numbers of injured and killed were huge during the war, there was beneficial side effect that the war produced, the poetry of several people from 1914 to 1918.

Three of the great World War I poets were Siegfried Sassoon, Robert Graves, and Wilfred Owen. Through their wartime experiences, these three men wrote what is considered to be the best war poetry of all time. The first of these three great war poets was Siegfried Sassoon. Sassoon was born on September 8 th, 1886, at Weirleigh, in Kent, England.

Siegfried Lorraine Sassoon was the second son of Alfred and Theresa Sassoon. Already, at the age of five, Sassoon started to experience some hardships when his parents separated. Sassoon went to college at Marlborough College for a year, he then transferred to Claire College in Cambridge. While at Cambridge, Sassoon studied both law and history but did not earn a degree. For the eight years between leaving college and the war, Sassoon lived the life of a country gentleman.

He spent most of his time playing sports and writing poetry. Sassoon's best pre-war poem was called "The Daffodil Murderer. " Since Sassoon knew that he could not live his entire life as a country gentleman, he enlisted in the army on August 2 nd, 1914. This was only two days before the British declaration of war. After spending a year in the army, Sassoon became an officer in the Royal Fusiliers, and was posted to the Western Front in France. Between November 1915, and April 1917, Sassoon served as a second lieutenant in both the First and Second Battalions. (Sassoon, Siegfried) Considered to be recklessly brave, he soon obtained the nickname "Mad Jack. " In June 1916, he was awarded the Military Cross for bringing a wounded man back to the British lines while under heavy fire. After being wounded in April 1917, Sassoon was sent back to England.

While recovering at a hospital in England, Sassoon met two other poets, Robert Graves, and Wilfred Owen. After experiencing the war first hand, this seemed to be the only thing that was on his mind at this time. His experiences had a great influence on his poetry that is famous to this day. Most of Sassoon's poems about the war had come after he had been released from the hospital. One of the famous works he wrote after the war was "The Kiss. " This was a very patriotic poem that reminded him of how he felt when he first joined the Army. In this poem, Sassoon explained that he would do anything to protect his country.

Towards the end, he said that he die not want any reward for fighting, but only wanted to spend his life on this sacred land. Another one of Sassoon's famous poems is called "Suicide in the Trenches. " This was a post-war poem that showed his strong feelings toward trench warfare. In this poem Sassoon first described a boy who lived a simple, good and happy life. Sassoon then goes on to explain how this boy's life could be taken away so quickly while fighting in the trenches. He then continued saying that no one knew what it was like to fight in the trenches. After the war, Sassoon led a happy life.

In 1967, Sassoon died in his home in Wilshire. The second great poet of World War I was a man named Wilfred Owen. Owen was born in 1893, in Plas Wilmot, Oswestry, Shropshire. He was the eldest of four children. Owen's family was a middle-class, impoverished, provincial family.

As a child, Owen did not have any close friends and was thus very lonely. In 1907, Owen attended school at Shrewsbury Technical School as a day student. At the age of twenty-two, Owen became a teacher in Europe. While continuing his teaching duties, Owen visited a hospital and became acquainted with many of the wounded soldiers. These visits deeply effected Owen and he finally decided to enlist in the army. Said Owen of his decision to enlist: "I came out in order to help these boys - directly by leading them as well as an officer can; indirectly, by watching their sufferings but I may speak of them as well as a pleader can be.

I have done the first. " (Wilfred Owen Tribute) During the war, Owen was injured early on, so they sent him back to a hospital in England. There Owen met fellow poets Siegfried Sassoon and Robert Graves. Since Owen was only minimally wounded, he was soon back in the war. On November 4, 1918, only seven days before the end of the war Owen was killed by a German machine gun at the age of 25. Owen had written most of his poetry during times of war and in the hospital bed in England. Almost all of Owen's poems are about his hard experiences in the war.

One fan of Owen's work says: "The melancholy themes of lost youth and surrendered innocence, as well as images of the blatant grotesqueness of war find expression in Wilfred Owen's poems. " (Wilfred Owen Tribute) Owen was not known for his literary works before the war. This was probably so, because Owen did not write many works and the few he did write were when he was still young. Gertrude White said, "It has often been said that Owen was made a poet by the war. " (White, 16) After Owen's death was the time he received the most recognition for being a fantastic poet. A man named Edmund Blunder published a book of Owen's works in 1931, for the whole world to read. Fellow poet, Siegfried Sassoon, also arranged a book of collected poems by Owen since only five of his poems were published while Owen was still alive. One of Owen's most famous poems is "Strange Meeting. " This poem's subject is the aftermath of some of the battles in which Owen himself took part.

In this poem, Owen explains the pressures of being in a battle, and that anything can happen. Another one of Owen's poems is called "Insensibility. " This poem is written about the play of war. In this particular poem, Owen tells the reader that war can turn people into cold-blooded killing machines. He describes these kinds of people as lucky because they do not really think about all the killing that is going on around them. The third great poet of World War I was a man named Robert Graves.

Graves was born on July 24 th, 1895 in Wimbledon, England. Robert Von Ranke Graves was the middle child of his father's second family of five. (Focus on... ) Graves' father was a school inspector, the editor of an Irish literary magazine, and a published poet. "Graves was raised with an unchallenged belief in God, King, and Country. " (Focus on... ) At the age of thirteen, Graves was sent to Charterhouse public school. As a child, Graves was bullied at school because he was Jewish. Incidents like this started Graves' career as a poet.

On the outbreak of the First World War, Graves enlisted in the British army. Captain Graves joined the Royal Welsh Fusiliers and server on the Western Front. Graves was involved in trench warfare during the war. In July 1916, he was seriously wounded when shrapnel from an exploding shell pierced his chest and thigh. The army mistakenly told Graves' family that he had been Killed In Action.

They even sent all of Graves' personal belongings back to his family. His obituary was written even before anybody realized that Graves was still alive. While recovering in a hospital in England, Graves met another poet by the name of Siegfried Sassoon. Both men had very similar views about the war and how it was fought. Graves wrote several poems while waiting to return to the Western Front. After an additional four months of recovery in a hospital in France, the doctors pronounced that Graves was unfit for duty then forced him to return to England.

After the war, Graves studied English Literature at St. John's College in Oxford. After acquiring his degree, he moved to Mallorca, where he wrote many of his poems about the war. It was at this time that Graves became a true poet. Graves defined a poet as, "One who all the resources of language and his own talent to articulate man's overcoming of the cruel face of one's historical period. " (Focus on... ) Graves' poem "The Last Post" is about how brutal World War I actually was. Graves describes the war as a deadly game where the only thing a man is worried about is getting out alive.

He then says that these young fighters are too good to die, but even they cannot escape death on the battlefield. A famous poem that Graves wrote about the aftermath of the war is "Recalling War. " In the first stanza of this poem, Graves explains how the injuries of the war will never leave the soldiers who fought in it. The next stanza goes on to describe war as a cloud of death waiting to claim it's next victims. Toward the end of this poem, Graves says that whenever we think of war, it leads, "To yet more visions of despair. " (Parsons, 172) In 1975, Robert Graves retired to the village of Day in Mallorca, where he lived until his death on December 7 th, 1985. The benefits of war are small compared to the tragedies that occur. Although war can inspirational to some, the inspiration is through it's sheer horror and senselessness.

These three men would certainly agree with this analysis regarding war. Bibliography: World War I was the first major war in which virtually every country took part.
