The main characters of Much Ado About Nothing are Benedick, Beatrice, Claudio, Hero, Don Pedro, and Don John. Some of the minor characters are Antonio, Borachio, Dogberry, Leonato, Conrad, Ursula, and Margaret. The main characters in a play have may lines in which they speak to each other. However, the minor characters rarely have big speaking parts. The only way one can get to know the minor characters is through their short conversations with the major characters. Margaret is one of Heros gentlewoman.
Margaret was the women that Borachio was with when he called out Heros name, to break up her engagement. She knew that it was not Hero who was seen with him, yet she never came forward with the truth. This made her look like a foolish women, and a bad friend. Then when Benedick asks her to help him figure out how to talk to Beatrice, Margaret flirts with him. She replied, Will you then write me a sonnet in praise of my beauty?
This shows that on top of what she did to Hero, she was now being a bad friend to Beatrice. This is important because the fear of betrayal is a theme of this play. Margarets actions prove that even good women can cheat, and it gives the others a bad reputation, like Benedick said. Benedick flirts back a little bit by telling her that she deserves the poem, but he still tries to stay on the subject of Beatrice. This shows that Benedick has still not fully fallen in love with Beatrice, and he will probably never fully change his ways. Claudio wants to marry Hero so naturally he would have to be nice to her father, Leonato.
After he breaks up with Hero and calls her a whore, Leonato tells him and Don Pedro that Hero died. He yells at Claudio and tells him that it was all his fault. Antonio said of his brother, If he could right himself with quarreling, some of us would lie now. Claudio stills remains calm and does not disrespect Leonato.
He tells him that he had never even thought of using his sword on him. This makes Claudio seem a little nicer, after the terrible things he said about Hero. One theme of this play is the struggle between good and evil. Claudio's reaction to Leonato saves him from being seen as an evil character. Leonato would go to any lengths to make the truth come out because, he cared about his daughter and her reputation.
The interactions between minor and major characters are important because they give us clues on the personality and morality of all characters. Even the characters with less lines can have an effect on the themes and on the plot of a play.
