The Grapes of Wrath Theres an old saying, Blood is thicker than water. Well, nothing proves truer than the families in The Grapes of Wrath. When faced with hardships, people leaned on their kin for support and love, and in the worst of times would even turn their backs on those they had known for years to protect and provide for their families: Cant think of that. Got to think of my own kids. Three dollars a day, and it comes every day. Times are changing, mister, dont you know?

Cant make a living on the land unless youve got two, five, ten thousand acres and a tractor. Crop land isnt for little guys like us any more. You dont kick up a fowl because you cant make Fords, or because youre not the telephone company. Nothing to do about it. You try to get three dollars a day someplace. Thats the only way. (50) The Joads family is no exception.

Their trials, tribulations, and broken dreams while suffering through the harsh realities of a fallen America only bring them closer together and remind the reader of true family values. When the reader is first introduced to the Joad's, as a full family, one can sense the love immediately. [Ma] moved towards [Tom] lithely, soundlessly And her joy was almost like sorrow (101). Even though she hasnt seen him for quite some time, and that may be the initial reason for her wonderment, she truely loves Tom and Steinbeck does an excellent job of portraying the emotions involved. Even when Granma and Granpa come into the house, the same emotions are evident, although the actions are quite opposite. Granma repeatedly pu-raise[s] Gawd, while Granpa walk[s] up and slap[s] Tom, [with] his eyes going[ing] with affection and pride.

The reader knows the Joad's can hold love for a person no matter how long hes been gone, or where hes been (and in this case, prison). Former Reverend Jim Casy is even accepted as one of their own when he arrives with Tom at Uncle Johns house. Ma makes sure there is room on the truck for him and Tom calls him over as if he were one of the men in the family. [Casy] knew the government of families, and he knew he had been taken into the family (138). When Granpa dies suddenly of a stroke, the first of many setbacks, the family pulls together to give him the most proper burial they can afford, because they got no money to pay for funerals (194). They take his death in with dignity, but there is still a great deal of love and thought that goes into his burial, and they do not just toss him aside as if they are relieved to be rid of the extra burden of an old man. The family became a unit, working together to get the job done and to be there for each other as well.

When the car breaks down, Mas stubbornness prevails, as she refuses to let the family be split up in any way, shape, or form. You done this that thinkin much What we got lef in the worl? Nothin but us. Nothin but the folks.

We come out an Granpa, he reached for the shovel- shelf right off. An now, right off, you wanna bust up the folks (230 - 1). She knows how much being together means for the family, and if she lets them fall apart in the slightest bit, it could be the begining of an avalanche of destruction for the Joad's. In essence, Ma is the backbone of the family, and she is the one who tries to keep and instill the values in her kin. She is the one always making sure everyone is fed, clothed, clean, and healthy. Ma knows that if she ever shows fear or despair, the entire family might collapse.

She realizes that they now have no home and that the only thing they have left in the world is each other, and she will fight to the death to keep her family together. Without Ma there, the Joads family would have never of made it all the way to California and stayed together. Therefore, she had to maintain a front for the family and she never let them see her without her mask on. The feeling of family goes even further than the immediate relation.

When brought into the Joads family, Casy is considered one of the clan, and he lives up to that title respectably when faced with the decision to do so. After a fight breaks out at a Hooverville where the Joad's are camped, Casy chooses to take the rap for hitting the officer, instead of letting Tom, knowing it would get him sent back to prison for breaking parole. If you mess in this your whole family, all your folks, gonna get in trouble. I don care about you.

But your ma and your pa, theyll get in trouble. Maybe theyll send Tom back to McAlester (363). He wont even argue about it, not changing his mind even when Al tells him that [he] think[s] [hes] a damn fool (363). To willingly go to jail for someone (especially one thats not truely your kin) lets the reader know how far love can go, even for a surrogate family. When Connie leaves Rose of Sharon unexplainably, once again the family pulls together in a time of need.

Although its done in a very tactless manner, Pa tries to tell Rose of Sharon that Connie wasn no good, and that [they] didnt want him [anyway]. Its meant to be positive, yet it hurts her feelings and Ma has to hush Pa before he says something worse. And instead of treating Rose of Sharon like an outcast for being a single mother, they embrace her and continue to support her throughout her pregnancy. Through Granma's death, Rose of Sharon's baby being stillborn, Toms hiding out from the cops, and the flooding of their boxcar, which were some of the family's major tragedies, the Joad's managed to stay together. Despite many times when it would have been easier to go their own ways, they fought to remain a family and succeeded. They proved family values again and again to each other and finally reached out to spread some of that love to complete strangers.

Rose of Sharon selflessly saved another mans life by offering to him her breast milk. By the end of the novel, Steinbeck has shown the reader not only the value of a family and the need to help those within the family, but how values can reach outside and teach others to also help other individuals, regardless of who they are.
