Brave New World Research Paper Aldous Huxley is considered to be one of the greatest Literary Minds in the Modern Era. The book Brave New World, is considered to be one of his greatest creations. Huxley believed it was easiest to touch your reader in fiction. In Brave New World he did.

His book was a tool for him to give his fears and reservations a voice to speak to the public. Huxley s great mind and many fields of research allowed him to write this uniquely insightful piece, Brave New World is a look into the human psyche and society. It speaks out against what he feels is evil in society and what is wrong with the human cultural and industrial revolution. He used irony as his main weapon to illustrate the degradation of human society. His family was one of the prominent intellectual families in England, and his Uncle was Darwin s Bulldog. His great mind and Unique insight into the human world and social surroundings and the attitude of the times led him to write this masterpiece that exemplifies his genius and speaks to the world.

Brave New World, begins in the Central London Hatchery and Conditioning Center. A place where humans are grown and trained in the simplest sense, In this building human life begins on a conveyor built on an assembly line. Here they create social castes by creating biologically better and more advanced humans and, The Alphas and Betas. The also grow physically stunted runts Deltas and Epsilons, all castes conditioned to fit their predestined life style. The Alphas and Betas do higher Valco 2 level work.

Alphas being technological innovators and social innovators doing work that actually requires a wider field of knowledge and a working thought process. Still most Alphas although physically and mentally superior still are just as brain-washed as the rest. One might thing that an educated Alpha would see the evils of their society, but they do not. They have Solidarity Service meetings, a pseudo-religious meetings that consist of soma-trips and a wild chanting to fill the holes in the spirit only they can feel. Still some break their conditioning and think, of course then they are promptly exiled. Betas although still intelligent are just taught what they need to know and their limited minds are happy.

From there down the work with Deltas and Epsilons in unskilled and menial. Their minds primitive and bodies weaker and less attractive. There is no long birth in this Brave New World there is decanting. Viviparous relationships are out the door and new superficial relationships are in.

The thought is shallowness and lack of intensity of emotion in one key to happiness. Contentment through consumption, God is a long forgotten myth and all are happy with their soma holidays. This worlds happiness is based in and on a shallow existence. From the very beginning according to class they are conditioned through sleep teaching, While sleeping they will continually repeat phrases such as, Alpha Children wear grey, They work much harder than we do because they are so frightfully clever. I am really awfully glad I am a Beta. (Huxley 27) There is also behavioral conditioning such as electric shocks to teach a certain class to like or dislike things.

Delta children are shocked when they touch books. All children are taught to love country games but hate the country. This leads to consumption of Valco 3 travel. Children are taught right from the beginning to respect their betters and be happy being of a lower caste. In sync with superficial relationships people believe everyone belongs to everyone and sex with hundreds of partners is not ridiculed at all but praised among both genders, from a young age erotic play is highly endorsed. Relationships are known to cause intense emotions that can lead to sadness.

They also know that love between couples will create a bond that is imperfect and also leads to unhappiness because of this people are conditioned not to grow close to other humans. People who alone together can cause social instability and people who are sad could possibly cause revolution. Contentment through ignorance is key. The main characters were John, The Savage Lenina Crowne, and Bernard Marx. The characters and plot in this book were not so much the focus of this book and but less as important as the message but they still played an integral role.

The plot was purposely simple and did not deviate. Huxley did not want to make the book so convoluted that the reader was distracted from the message. The actual story really begins with The Savage a man born and not decanted in a reservation in America, his mother was from the Brave New World. This reservation is one of the last places where human society is normal however backward and unhappy. Here Lenina and Bernard come on vacation and meet this savage. Bernard sees a possibility for his own personal gain here by bringing John back to England.

At first The Savage is excited to leave this reservation where he said, Alone Alone, So am I, Terribly Alone, (Huxley 139). Unfortunately for John could not handle this new and superficial world, the change in extremes is too much. He came to the realization that Valco 4 this world was fake and held no real happiness and fulfillment. After his crisis with Lenina and his mothers death his ability to control himself was lost. In the end Bernard Marx s unorthodox behavior was punished with exile in Iceland and John drove himself insane with guilt and after taking soma and participating in a an orgy he hung himself Aldous Huxley was born July 26 th, 1894. He was born into a family of gifted intellectuals in high society.

His education was quite extensive and he spent some time at Oxford Where graduated in the first of his class with honors... His first book was written in 1916 a book of poems called the Burning Wheel. In 1931 he wrote his first play, and In 1932 he wrote Brave New World in only four months. Later in life after an experience with mescaline he wrote The Doors of Perception. When Jim Morrison named his band the book was its name sake. He also took contract writing jobs in Hollywood As a man he accumulated the respect of many peers it was said that It was impossible to quarrel with him waves of ill-natured spite broke up when they met his shore of integrity. (British Literature 14).

He was considered to be a gentle and strong man. Huxley had always been on a higher level than his peers and always was a social activist if not in a very conventional way. His great intelligence and unique insight gave him a special door into his reader s heart. His style and understanding of people were major factors in his writings success. Huxley was a member of The British Eugenics society. Eugenics is the science of breeding people to get desired traits.

He was probably not so much an activist as an innovator. He also joined the pacifist movement early on in World War One and Two, Valco 5 during this time period it was innovation. He was born into high society and a family of great minds, one would think this would lead a man to be arrogant and aloof but Huxley was neither and His great understanding gave him the ability to speak to the common man. The society of his upbringing had very little impact on most of his writing styles although it did impact his message. If it were not for the global society as he saw it there would have been no reason to write Brave New World. He wrote this book as a dark and prophetical warning against industrialization and superficial society and perhaps even communism...

Huxley lived in a historic time period of government and economic turmoil. Communism and fascism were on the rise. The industrial revolution was booming and perhaps the way he saw it a evil that could destroy society. One of the underlying themes in his book was a warning against the evils of Ford Assembly Line perhaps even against Ford himself. The Fords in the new society are god-like figures. These men keep the world happy by keeping people from truly thinking and making them like so many ants all working, unthinking for the good of man.

This also leads to his views on communism, A governmental system that has part of its foundation in selfless work for the good of society. His Brave New World is an extreme communist society, with social castes, but still idealistically communist. All the people working for the common good of society and without thought for themselves and no thought of identity. He feared for the people who so willingly were apart of this industrial revolution where the individual was useless and true craftsmanship obsolete so he Valco 6 wrote a book that illustrates the feasible extreme.

A world based on industrial consumption and instant gratification. One of Huxley s main literary devices was Irony. From the very beginning Huxley used irony As his literary sword to make his Brave New World look foolish. Now the word for God was Ford, the irony lies in the worship of a man who created the assembly line. Industry is now a God. The Irony of the Savage is used most often.

When the savage was brought into England he originally said in adoration of the people Oh Brave New World that has such people in it (Huxley 141) In the end these words were spoken only with bitter despair and remorse. This life in this new world he knew was a lie. The Savage was originally brought to England to further Bernard s interest and in the beginning he did but later John s hand destroyed it. Even Johns parentage was ironic his father was a D. H. C.

a powerful member of this society, a conventional man who adhered to the rules of society, yet he had a son. Then there was Mustapha Mond the World Controller and Ford. A man who also at one time rebelled and was given the choice to use his insight to further society or destroy it. He chose to support it. Still as a Ford who told all the people to live a unthinking life, Mond had his own personal collection of Bibles and books of philosophy.

Aldous Huxley s theme in Brave New World was one of dark and horrible foreboding. Although his setting contradicts it, The main characters suffer from the this new improved society. John and Bernard in particular were quite aware of the evil of their Foreign society. The theme was a warning of what people mindless evil Valco 7 would eventually due to them. It would make them mindless, morale less drug addict, consumers.

Only Bernard and John felt the pang. Bernard because of his inability to fit in with this society because of his appearance and lack of self-confidence and John because he had seen a semi-healthy world that wasn t based totally on consumer interest and progress. Huxley used the his setting to set off his theme. The time and place were not as important as the people and morale standards the society had in it. His setting was somewhere in the not-so-distant-future. Most of the story took place in Britain he didn t the time or the geographical setting much in the development of the plot.

Huxley s style was one all his own, his style and technique well equipped to touch the general audience. The individual perspectives of the main characters were used to build a marvelously complex plot (Literary Companion 97). Huxley being raised in an intellectual family and well educated often went about arguing in a logical framework meant to persuade, but in his masterpiece he used fiction to quietly criticize reality. This allowed his audience to come to their own conclusions and analysis if the world they lived in (Literary Companion 106). He used strange and unique techniques to gain a rapport with his reader. He used incongruity for satiric effect.

He married technology and religion with Our Ford and John and Lenina s relationship (Literary Companion 111). He coolly mocked what society had come to glorify and doing so getting his point across in a less zealous and more audience friendly way. (Literary Companion 116) Valco 8 Huxley s Brave New World was a literary masterpiece that has touched and will touch millions of people. His unique thinking and gentle loving nature allowed him to write a fictional narrative that could truly touch the reader. In a time of instant gratification and political turmoil his voice spoke a dark prophecy to the people. He saw what others could not. Even with is high upbringing Huxley could touch the common man.

His own life was full of death, his family friends and wife died but out came a man of astonishing strength and kindness who still wished to help. Although his death was not widely mourned because he died on the day Kennedy was assassinated he went quietly and peacefully leaving behind a legacy of insightful works and touching stories 326
