Brave New World a Discussion Novel of Ideas In his novel Brave New World Huxley seems to have practically abandoned the traditional concept of a plot. The plot that exists, only serves to demonstrate and illustrate his ideas, starting with the tour in the cloning plant and continuing as the characters tell their life stories and the Savage explores the society, comparing it to the classical one, like the one he is used to. Huxley presents us with his vision of a futuristic society, in which everyone is truly happy, but also explains the cost at which this comes. His society is based on stability, and he has found, that the best way to it is maximum possible happiness. This happiness is achieved by hypnotically conditioning people in their childhood, a caste system maximally time-consuming hobbies and if it should happen, that all else fails, there is always soma, an anti-depressant and hallucinogenic drug, which they are made to believe, that it takes away all the worries and is accepted widely, In fact, people are considered weird, if they refuse to take up sports like air golf or administer soma. Another motive in the novel is the possibly destructive power of advancing technology.
He explains with the examples of cloning and hypnopaedia, that people recklessly mess with, make use of potentially dangerous technologies that can have a serious impact on our society. He also demonstrates with the After Ford calendar that technology will push aside traditional values. This is well evident with the banishment of religion of any kind and the replacement of God and Christ with Ford. Through the eyes of Savage and Bernard Marx Huxley shows how we are headed for destruction, how technology is bound to become the new religion, how it will control and ultimately destroy humanity. Humans are no longer rulers of the world but are tools that can be mass-produced and manipulated with.
