Boston Tea Party The Boston Tea Party happened in late November 1773. The plan involved the Sons of Liberty dressing up like Indians to dump a shipment of tea over the side of a ship into the Boston Harbor. They dressed like Indians to fool the British so they would not know who they were. The British officials were outraged by this incident. To teach the colonists a lesson, the British, encouraged by King George III, passed the Intolerable Acts. As a result First Parliament shut down the Port of Boston.

Second Parliament no longer allowed colonists to hold town meetings more than once a year. Third Parliament provided rules and regulations allowing officers and other officials charged with major crimes to be tried in Britain instead of Massachusetts. The Fourth Parliament passes a Quartering Act. In September of 1774 delegates from twelve colonies gathered and became known as the First Continental Congress.

There they decided to boycott all British groups and decided to stop importing goods to Britain until the laws were repealed. They also decided to start a militia. General Gage learned that the Minute Men had a large storage of arms and gunpowder in Concord. There, he planned a surprise attach but the colonists were prepared and already had codes. In the Old North Church, the signal was one lamp if the British were coming by land and two lamps lit if they were coming by sea.

Once Paul Revere saw the signal, he ran to his horse and rode throughout the countryside warning everyone in all the towns from Boston to Concord. He called to everyone that was listening, Get your militia, the British are coming! The militia was ready. They stopped the British at Lexington and started the Revolutionary War.

The colonists won and that is what started America.
