Book Review 1 1. Name of Book/ Short Story: I Heard The Owl Call My Name 2. Name of Author: Margaret Craven 3. A List of 5 Books Written by the same Author: I Heard The Owl Call My Name Again Calls The Owl Walk Gently This Good Earth The Home Front 4. Interesting Facts about the Author Her first book I Heard The Owl Call My Name was written when she was sixty-nine years old. She was born in 1901 and died in 1980. 5.

The Plot: 5. 1 Name the main Character / s in the Story. Mark 5. 2 Who Narrates the Story? The Author 5. 3 Write a paragraph of 20 - 25 lines on the Main Character Mark is an American vicar with a terminal illness. He is sent to an island, by a Bishop to find his inner self and as time passes on the island, he becomes more attached to the people and the actual island. He adapts some of the cultures of the Kwakiutl villagers as his own.

When he is told that his work is done he becomes scared and confused, and would rather stay on the island. He hears the owl call his name, which is a legend, believed by the Kwakiutl villagers, that says that your time of death is soon meaning that he would soon die. Mark is a kind, helpful and outgoing man and tries to help the Kwakiutl villagers by teaching them his American culture. They soon adapt to some of the ways, which they find useful to themselves. He was always there when someone needed help or advise and was always willing to try and solve his or her problems. He is very friendly and soon makes many new friends on the island in the village even with the old arrogant elders who at first didn t agree with Mark s ways and wanted to keep to the old ways.

As time passed he earned more respect from the elders and they even considered him as one of their own. When he died the village actually mourned his death and he was always remembered as the man who introduced modern ways. 5. 4 Write a paragraph of 20 - 25 lines on the Character who impressed you the most. The character who impressed me the most was definitely Mark! ! Just the way that he decided to turn more towards God and start teaching his culture was a real inspiration.

He had real guts going into a village he had never been before and that was what impressed me the most. He was a helpful and caring man who could always give advice and help solve problems. When first setting foot on the soil of the beach in the small village of Kingcome the entire community was afraid of Mark. He was considered another greedy white man. Time passed and although the elders of the village still did not really agree with Mark s culture the young seemed to have a desire to learn more about it. He became an inspiration to the youth of the village and in time earned the respect of the elders too.

He was very friendly and soon was considered one of the villagers. Mark was an overall good guy just going around telling of his way of life and what the American way was all about. He did not forcefully change anyone, nor did he mean to break apart a tribe. 6. Suspense and Drama: 6. 1 Write about the part of the Book you found had a lot of suspense. Right at the end of the book was the part, which I found had a lot of suspense. Mark was in a canoe rowing down the river.

The water conditions weren t very good due to stormy weather. It had been raining the whole day. The waters were violent the wind was blowing and in the skies there was lightning and loud thunder. In a freak accident a lighting bolt struck a tree along side the river. The lightning caused a piece of timber to break off. The piece of timber hit Mark on the head while he was in the canoe and sadly killed him. 6. 2 Which part of the book did you find fascinating?

Why? Write a paragraph of 25 - 30 lines. When he came to the village there was a chapel that was very old and needed to be rebuilt. The villagers needed to build a new chapel before the rainy season or else it wouldn t be possible. The whole community got together and together they built a new chapel. Everyone worked together the old, the young, and even the women.

It was amazing how even though Mark and the villagers came from different cultures they still worked towards a common goal. This chapel would be the place where Mark would preach his culture and where people would come to him for advise and help so therefore this chapel played a very important role in the entire book. It was most fascinating because the chapel was built relatively quickly and completed before the rainy season arrived. It was also built without the use of modern day technology but by the manpower of the Indians showing us that although modern culture makes life easier old ways can still do the job. 7. Humour and Irony: 7. 1 Briefly discuss a humorous incident in the Story. I found the piece where he dies rather amusing.

I know that is sounds kind of harsh but it was really funny. The author could have at least let poor Mark die of natural death rather than a piece of timber hitting him on the head. It all happens during a thunderstorm when a bolt of lightning strikes a tree and a piece of timber hits Mark on the head. The reason I found it so humorous was because it was so unexpected and tragic. 7. 2 Briefly discuss any irony that might have occurred in the Book. What I thought was ironic was that Mark had a terminal illness he was totally aware of it and came to accept it. He then turned more religious and began teaching his culture to many people.

Everyday he was dying slowly but yet he still wanted to help people. This illness had changed his life and in the end it wasn t even the illness that killed him it was the piece of timber that hit him. 8. Theme: 8. 1 Sum up the theme of the book in one sentence. A drama, which shows you how, the elders of the Kwakiutl tribe were naturally insecure with the ways of the white man, yet the tribal youth seemed eager to welcome the change in lifestyle. 9. Setting: 9. 1 Briefly discuss the setting of the story. Takes place on the American Indian Island of the Kwakiutl tribe in the small village of Kingcome.

The beaches are beautiful and the island is very efficient. The island was very remote and was far away from modern civilization. 10. Vocabulary: 10. 1 List 10 new words you have come across in the book. Write the words down as well as their dictionary meaning. Explicate: to make clear or explain. Vicar: an incumbent of a parish.

Peruse: read or study, carefully or thoroughly. Honky: a white person. 11. Evaluation: Evaluate the book. Express your opinion clearly in two or three well-constructed sentences. Normally I dont like books about people who invade other peoples lives and cultures and proceed to preach Christianity to them. However when I read this book I found myself sympathizing with the dying priest and admiring his relationship with the Indians.

I was surprised at how easily Margaret Craven made it all so believable. This book didn t have a lot of action but it moved along. This is definitely a book worth reading.
