The main character in Catch- 22 is a man by the man of Yossarian. He is a bombardier in the Air Force during World War II. Catch- 22 is the story of how Yossarian goes crazy, but can t get out of the Air Force because of catch- 22. Catch- 22 says that the Air Force can t ground anyone on the basis of insanity unless they ask to be grounded, but if anyone asks to be grounded they must be sane. The story starts with Yossarian in the hospital. He has a condition that isn t quite jaundice.
He really isn t sick, but would rather spend his time in the hospital than in the war. Yossarian would rather do anything than be in the war. He was fine with being in the war, until his tail-gunner, Snowden, gets shot on a bombing run and he dies in Yossarian s arms. This really starts to bother Yossarian over time, along with numerous other equally gruesome deaths he has witnessed. As more and more people die around him, Yossarian develops a strange paranoia that the entire German military is out to kill him.
By the end of the book, Yossarian is walking around backwards as so no one can sneak up behind him. Yossarian tries many time and in many ways to make the Air Force get rid of him. He never really disobeys an order, but he does everything in his power to disrupt and cause confusion. At Snowden s funeral, Yossarian spends the entire time in a tree stark naked. When his group was assigned to bomb Bologna, he changed the lines on the map so that his superior officers would think Bologna was American occupied. Still, nothing he did could convince the doctor he deserved to be grounded.
He tried talking to his Commanding Officer, Major Major Major Major, but Major Major didn t allow people in his office unless his wasn t there. Another thing adding to Yossarian s frustration is that Colonel Cathcart keeps pushing the number of required missions up. At the beginning of the story, the number required to go home was 35, but at the end the required number is 70. This way, no one gets to go home unless it is in a body bag.
Towards the end of the book, all of Yossarian s friends start dieing. When Yossarian notifies a friend s girlfriend that Nately is dead, she becomes upset and stabs him over and over with a potato peeler. He is admitted to the hospital and treated. When he is discharged from the hospital, Nately s girlfriend again attacks Yossarian and he runs away and isn t seen again. In conclusion, Yossarian is disheartened by the war and is upset about the unfairness of mortality. He doesn t understand how fate can choose who lives and who dies.
He believes that the only sane people in war are not those who are fighting for their country, but those who are fighting for their lives.
