Bridget Jones's Diary Bridget John Diary's heroine has first appeared in novel by Helene Fielding. In a very short time the book became bestseller. One and half millions books have been sold in two month. It was an unexpected success for Helene Fielding. Bridget became not a merely bright fiction bright actor of the book but a culture heroine of the time because almost every reader was able to find in Bridget's inward a piece of his own.
Helene Fielding began to write Bridget John Diary in 1995. While most writers discussed the problems of world politics in Yugoslavia in their works, Helene Fielding wrote about everyday life of ordinary person. In six weeks by then she stopped her writing but in a short period she recommenced the work. Helen Fielding have wrote Bridget John Diary anonymously because nobody believed in success of her fiction but all her friends were surprised when Bridget Johns Diary were published. Working Title British Production Company had foreseen the popularity of the novel and bought the rights for film even before Bridget Johns Diary became a bestseller. New problem were supposed to be crucial for single women of Bridget's age seeking a man because she had enough episodic boyfriends in her life and in thirty-five years mistake looked to Bridget be too serious for her farther life. "Maybe this was the devastating hunk I'd been waiting my whole life to meet... maybe not. " She is tired completely to be barren spinster and tried to find family order with peaceful man and kids. But another Bridget John is running risks to be caught by Mark Darcy's wild life and her dreams about quiet family life would remain just dreams for all of her life. Two men are Bridges admirers in the same time: sexy and funny Daniel Cleaver and very eligible but terribly dressed and conservative Mark Darcy who is a really strong men of extraordinary intelligence. Darcy dreamed of a man who will be able not just to be with her but to make her life enjoyable, who will be able to make a dinner from time to time and Mark Darcy was absolutely different man at the time when he met Bridge first time. Nevertheless, he changes in many ways under the pressure of his rowed passion. He is enormously rich and successful in career. Resolving one problem she just has got another one to solve. To realize Bridget Johns Diary in its entirely we may to compare it to Jane Austins novel Pride and Prejudice which influenced Helene Fielding deeply. In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, life for the upper-middle class and the aristocracy was simple and comfortable, at least on the surface. Strict manners and morals, that often prevented them from asserting or protecting themselves, bound these two classes of people. Such lifestyles are illustrated quite honestly in Jane Austins novel, Pride and Prejudice. The characters in this novel have comfortable lives on the surface; however, internally they are victims of their social status. The husband and wife duo of Collins and Charlotte Lucas-Collins are two prime examples of this mentality.
Collins, who is a minister, and bound by the social class of his benefactor, Lady Catherine, always puts on a facade that makes him seem much classier than normal when he is around others, he constantly showed off his possessions. Charlotte, Collins wife, was not so much his wife by choice, but rather, out of necessity. Charlotte, a twenty-seven year old single woman nearly doomed to remain a spinster for the rest of her life, had to marry soon, and the only man that made a proposal was Collins, therefore she had to say yes. Mrs.
Bennet, the mother of Eliza, always hurriedly rushes about to get her daughters married. Her haste is understandable, partly, because, the Bennet family has no male heir, therefore any daughters left unmarried will be thrust into poverty upon their fathers death. However, most of her rushing seems nothing more than the nagging, useless bickering of a gossiping old biddy. Mr.
Bingley seems not to be a victim per se, but the people around him and their superficial motives tend to cause him harm. His sister, Caroline, causes many people to avoid Bingley because of her snobbishness. Mr. Darcy, though good intentioned, almost ruins Bingleys most promising marriage conquest by breaking Bingley and Jane Bennet up. These characters, though wealthy, and well entertained, became obvious victims of their social class, and its code of ethics. The more wealth one had, the tougher their rules of etiquette became, often forcing these people to forfeit their roles as thinking human beings.
This fact rings true not only in Pride and Prejudice, but also in life during that time period. The story of Bridget is different to Charlottes because of the different times at first. Today woman may be financially independent and husband is not the only way to survive but the problem of dilemma remains the same in its core. (Mathew, 39) Modern women try to find strong men for the couple because of the women nature. Even if they are affluent enough to live as a single woman they want to be with strong men as well as women of XIX century but the difference may be found in person making preference now (Thomson, 21). The inner masculine energetic remains to be the main reason for woman to love because of the psychological features of female. Strong woman seeks stronger man that is why Bridget loved Mark Darcy.
