Rap Musics Negative Influence on Children Today Rap music influences children in several different ways these days. Many people feel it can persuade people to do violent acts or sets a bad example. The Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) says that, listening to rap music leads to antisocial behavior like juvenile delinquency, breakup of the family, rise in satanic cults, and teen suicide. (PMRC# 3) Many suicides and cases of adolescent depression are blamed on a certain bands songs and or images. Others blame music for what people consider being young people rebelling against society or joining cults and worshipping Satan. Music has also been found to change peoples attitudes towards clothing or other products they buy. Just look at the clothes that people who listen to rap music wear.

They usually wear baggy jeans, everything is name brand, and have an I do not give a f k look. Many young people of my generation live for music. A guy called Frank that has been my friend not so long ago has become obsessed with music as if nothing else matters. He is reading, listening to lyrics and going to concerts where he is exposed to sex, violence, and drugs, which have a negative, influence and plague the music world.

Rap music has always been under fire for promoting things that are said to be wrong such as violence and pornography, rape, and sex. On May 31, 1995 Robert Dole criticized the entertainment industry calling it mainstreaming of deviancy. (Andrea Sachs # 6) There have not been too many recording artists that have made a bigger sexual statement than DMX. (Alt culture # 1) DMX became one of the first main groups accused of negatively influencing its listeners and by some people of breaking local decency laws. DMX brought the issues of racism's in todays society, doing wrongful deeds, and sex. Nevertheless, no one can make Frank stop listen to their songs.

They really have the power to exert enormous influence on young people and would pollute popular culture unless boycotted. (Andrea Sachs # 6) Violence is out of control in rap music lyrics. Frank told me that concerts in this category of music are full of violent fights. It turns him up. People are being shot, stabbed, punched, or kicked because music artists are influencing the audience to go out of control. And it turns him up! Is it normal?

Outside Tingley coliseum a riot broke out as fans waited for the start of a Hittman & Six-Two concert (Family Values Tour # 3) that took place in Albuquerque, New Mexico on February 27, 1999 (Family Values Tour # 3). Most pits, which are groups of people pushing and jumping around and into each other, take place at concerts. These cause people to fall and get kicked or stepped on or even knocked unconscious. On one of such concerts Frank broke his hand; some guys began fighting making a crush on the stadium.

It does not bother him; the more important is that he was on the concert of his idols. Violence goes beyond the concert atmosphere; it's just a small percentage of it. We have rap encouraging street violence. For example, NWA (NWA Band Members # 5) consists of five LA rappers whose controversial lyrics include topics like gang banging, drive-by shootings, and police confrontations. These lyrics sparked a new hatred for the police and among inner city kids. Music plays a big part when it comes to drug use.

Not only do we hear and see the drug abuse in the lyrics and or at concerts, we see it from our favorite music artists. This may influence children to go out and try drugs, which means it is probably going to complicate or even destroy their lives and the lives around them. Music lyrics also encourage drug use among their listeners. Frank started to use words such as Mary Jane, which is slang for marijuana. He says it is just a play, but who knows what next he will become addicted to.

As children listen to the radio and hear the names of these drugs they think everyone is doing it and may jump on that bandwagon and go out and experiment for him or herself. Congress has passed many laws, but rap musicians seem to find ways around them. They are not willing to admit to being part of the problem. On rap concerts you are exposed to drugs even if you do not use them personally. You can smell and see the smoke from marijuana in these music concerts. As the concert goes on many people are offering it to whoever may want some, including kids.

There are many views on how rap music and musicians influence childrens mental health. Research has shown a relationship between an increased number of adolescents sent to mental hospitals in the late 1980 s and early 1990 s and youths preference for rap music. Pictures and explicit lyrics give messages in rap albums promoted by large record companies presenting suicide as an alternative or solution. The parents claimed subliminal messages in the bands songs led their kids to commit suicide.

Teenagers often wish to rebel against society and often use types of music as examples or as guidance, and may be led to drug abuse and other things that society has rejected while on their quests. Children first used rap music in forming their group identity to label themselves as out of the ordinary, non - law abiding youths. As stated in the introduction, the Parents Music Resource Center (PMRC) has found many links between rap music and antisocial behavior. The PMRC has presented several theories that state that a teenagers exposure to rap products results in direct, antisocial effects, where teens imitated new, cultural heroes.

Research has found that the three most important influences for youths come from peers, media, and adults. Adults used to have the most influence but are becoming less involved and now media and peers are taking over. My research can be proved by my own example. I know Frank from High School, and he has never been involves in staff like this. When we entered university he turned away from us and got together with a group of Juniors who claimed themselves rap apostles. Rap music in the media gives several important themes to youths.

Some rap deals with ideas about obsession with the occult singing, songs about Satanism and human sacrifice, and the apparent acting out of these rituals in their concerts. I have decided to write a story about Rap music influence on children, as it is an extremely painful issue nowadays. I consider this kind of music to be very harmful and I am going to present this position using some research material I have found and my own knowledge and feelings. Groups such as this should not even be allowed to sell record copies without major record companies putting warning labels and laws that prevent children under the age of 18 from buying them. In order for this to work we would need to really enforce these laws. What good would they do if every retailer in America didnt follow the laws?

One thing that might point out the effects of this type of music may be the teen's grades dropping and the teen not caring at all about it, or maybe they go to school and all they do is skip class. The violence they may take forth could be very dangerous and harmful not toward others but also toward themselves. Not only something like physical damage toward them but also mental damage that may never heal. This damage is a possible reason to retaliate against others not just in the community but also in the school, like Kip Kindle in Oregon or the teens in the Columbine High School shootings in Colorado or possibly toward their immediate family they live with or their further relatives. Last week I found out that Frank was expelled from university for constantly ignoring rules and policies. To date, no studies have documented a cause-and-effect relationship between sexually explicit or violent lyrics and unpleasant behavioral effects.

For example, someone will listen to a song about killing someone and therefore he or she will go out and kill. But we can all recognize the overall effect music has on people, including adolescents and children. Teenagers become absorbed in songs they believe help better define them during the stress filled transition into adulthood. Teenagers who are exposed to music daily will accept the devastating lyrics in the music as if it were their lunch or job.

By writing the story I want to stop teens from listening rap music. They must to totally get rid of the rap genre itself or stop the use of the violent and suicide related lyrics in the music. Teens are vulnerable to many things especially music. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, they conducted a study, which found that teens on average listen to 40 hours of music per week.

That is 7 and one half hours more than an average school week. It sounds like teens are getting more from music than they are from their teachers they see 5 out of 7 days per week. This music can affect their school life and affect the way they think and act while in and around school. Rap can lead to violence and suicide in teens.

From listening to the music they do some of the things the artists points out in his or her lyrics. Another problem that seems to keep growing and growing in the medias eye is the advocating and glamorizing of drug abuse and alcohol. Rap music, alternative music, rock music, music videos, hip-hop radio stations, alternative radio stations, underground music clubs, and live concerts frequently give youths the impression that drug use and mostly that marijuana use is acceptable. The music industry promotes marijuana images in marketing packaging, implying that the use of marijuana and other illegal drugs is cool, that if you do a certain drug you can be part of the in-crowd. You see marijuana symbols on music videos, on baseball caps, on T-shirts, on posters, on stickers, on buttons, and on CD and cassette covers. Lyrics referring to marijuana use have become a common if not important ingredient in certain genres of rap music.

Marijuana use and songs about marijuana were always prevalent among rappers and urban teens but recently some popular artists have thrust the issue into the media spotlight easing attitudes surrounding marijuana use. A recent resurgence of marijuana themes in rock and alternative music delivers teenagers the message that marijuana, and not surprising that later other more harmful illegal drugs, are cool. Artists use a combination of words, music, and fast-paced animation to influence their audiences. Many people have several different ideas on how and why people are affected by music and others feel that music does not influence a persons actions what so ever. Some teenagers might say that music does not have anything to do with todays society. It is all the parents fault.

They should have paid more attention to what their kids were doing at the time. However, a person only has to look at the current events and see all of the claims and connections people throw at music and realize that it provides a major influence as a person matures and grows. I strongly believe that rap contains music that should be more carefully looked over by parents. It affects the way teens think. Also this music can imply outward violence toward others. Rap is a partial cause for teen violence and suicide.

Numbing and influential, teen violence and suicide can start with rap music. I failed to recognize my son was holding a hand grenade and it was live and it was going off in his mind. is what Raymond Kuntz told me when I came to Franks house. Mr. Kuntz told me that Frank had shown him a CD by DMX and then killed himself after listening to his music. When talked to Dr.

Benjamin Palumbo from the American Academy of Pediatrics said: Make no mistake about it; music can summon a range of emotions, most of which are wonderful. Yet this kind of music communicates potentially harmful health messages, especially when it reaches a vulnerable audience. Moreover, it was an effect of marijuana that could strengthen his decision to kill himself. This painful example had a big impact of my decision to write a story.

To show that Franks case is not a plain fiction, I tried to make as much research work to prove my point as I could. Young people deserve to have the same education and not have it influenced by sex, drugs or violence, which rap music obviously bring about. Throughout the generations music has been an influence on teens. The only difference is that now it does it in a negative way. This is why we need to stop these negative influences our children are being exposed to.
