In the exposition, before John Proctor is introduced, Reverend Paris and his daughter are in a small bedroom upstairs. Paris is sitting by his daughter, Betty. Paris caught Abigail Williams, Betty, and some other girls dancing in the woods around a fire.

Now that Betty is in a coma like state, rumors of witchcraft float around the town. The Plot of Crucible The initial incident is when the Reverend Paris finds the girls dancing and drinking blood in the woods. He saw the black slave waving her hands over the fire and chanting words. The Characters in Crucible The protagonist in the Crucible is John Proctor. He is honest, stern and blunt-spoken. He is a local farmer. John had a secret affair with Abigail Williams that led to the hysteria with the witch trials. He didnt want to prove Abigail as a fraud because he doesnt want his good name ruined. The antagonist in the Crucible is Abigail Williams.

She is Reverend Paris niece. She was once the servant for the Proctors and had an affair with John. She is very jealous of Elizabeth Proctor, so she accuses Elizabeth of being a witch. Abigail is smart, dishonest, and very spiteful. Another character, Reverend John Hale, is a young minister who is perceived in the local community as an expert on witchcraft. Hale is called to Salem by Paris to examine his daughter Betty.

Hale is a devoted Christian and hates witchcraft. He is intelligent so he doesnt get caught up in the trials of people that obviously are innocent. Reverend Parris is the minister of Salem's church. He is paranoid and hungry for power and therefore not liked by many people. He is concerned with assuring his position in the community. Judge Danforth is the presiding judge at all witch trials in Salem.

He thinks he is honest and fair, but he is really not. He thinks he is doing the right thing by executing all of the people accused of witchcraft and subsequently feels sorry about doing so. Elizabeth never lies and is very virtuous. In Crucible she was wrongly accused of witchcraft. In conclusion I would like to say that the story of A. Miller Crucible is a wonderful creation of the sophisticated writers spirit. The characters are shown to be experiencing the problems people feel nowadays regarding the honesty, integrity and fairness.

The setting, characters and historical significance make the Crucible a wonderful example of the classical piece of prose that even today draw millions of readers throughout the world. Bibliography: Miller, Arthur, The Crucible. New York, New York: Penguin Group, 1995.
