The Value of a collage Education This paper will discuss the values of a college education. There are many advantages to obtaining a college degree. College graduates on average make a higher salary in the workplace then non-graduates. Its easier for a college graduate to find a job and the unemployment for a college graduate is lower then an individual without a college degree.

You become much more marketable in the workplace. You are more likely to receive a promotion then someone without a college degree. While in college you are likely to meet new friends and future business associates. A college education is now the key to the American Dream replacing the high school diploma. A college education will also help give you a higher social value and for me will help in becoming a better role model for my son. Economic Value The economic value of a college education is great.

Studies show with each step in your education the average salary becomes higher as shown in the graph below. As you can see in the graph on average a person with a high school diploma makes $ 29, 200 less then a person with a bachelors degree and $ 41, 213 less then a person with a masters degree. In the 20 th century it was very possible to be promoted into a management positions with just a high school diploma. With a plethora of individuals obtaining their college degrees the margin for an employee to receive a management position is narrowing at a rapid pace. Employers are looking at college education as a guideline for their managers. If you look in the paper or a job search engine, one of the first requirements for a management position is a bachelors degree or higher.

More often then not with only a high school diploma you will enter a company at an entry-level position, and there is little room for advancement. The 20 th century people were promoted due to seniority, but in the 21 st century companies are less likely to promote from within, and more likely to hire a manager from outside the company. Without a college education it has become even more difficult to achieve a social rank of even middle-class. In the past if you had a high school diploma, and years in the company you would most likely receive a promotion based on your seniority.

Times have changed along with the workplace. With the growing number of college graduates, the way companies use college education as a management guideline it will put an economic strain on your life not to complete a bachelors degree. Marketable in the Workforce The National Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that jobs have increased for college graduates and declined for non-graduates from June of 2001 to 2002. 1. 1 million jobs were opened to college graduates and 2 million jobs have disappeared for non-graduates. The unemployment rate among college graduates has averaged a mere 2. 9 % compared to the national average of 5. 9 %. These statistics show that without a college degree, you are less likely to find a job. While there are the few that luck out the majority will find it much more difficult in the search for a quality position.

I know from personal experiences that when a manager is reviewing resumes they weed out the people that do not have a degree. Having this piece of paper shows that you have dedicated a part of your life to making yourself better. Your degree will open doors that would be shut if you did not have the degree. When a manager weeds out your resume the opportunity to argue why you are the person for the job has diminished. There have been many job opportunities Ive been qualified for and have been overlooked because I only have an associates degree. Before recent years, college was not essential.

There were many people in the workforce that advanced in their careers without a degree. Now with college being such a focal point the advancement opportunities for a non-college graduate have dwindled. Companies used to value their experienced employees above college education, but unfortunately in todays society experience is not as measurable as a college education. You often see managers working for the same company for years being scrutinized, terminated, or forced into early retirement only to be replaced with younger college educated individuals. William James (1907) states that the college education is called higher because it is supposed to be so general and so disinterested. At the schools, meaning technical or vocational you get a relatively narrow practical skill, you are told.

Whereas the colleges meaning universities give you the more liberal culture, the broader outlook, the historical perspective, the philosophic atmosphere or something which phrases of that sort try to express. He also states that you are made into an efficient instrument for doing a definite thing, you hear at the schools; but, apart from that, you may remain a crude and smoky kind of petroleum, incapable of spreading light. The colleges, on the other hand, although they may leave you less efficient for this or that practical task, suffuse you whole mentality with something more important then skill. They redeem you, make you well-bred; they make good company of you mentally. If they find you with a naturally boorish or caddish mind, they cannot leave you so, as a technical school may leave you. I think this is the way society looks at a college education.

Without college education you are narrowed in your thoughts. (1907) I believe this is also the perspective of the majority of companies. They feel with a degree from a technical school you will only be knowledgeable in the area outlined in that school, and you were not trained to look at all aspects of the situation. With a college degree companies know that you were molded into a person that can views each situation as needed. With a college degree you are also showing the company you are willing and dedicated enough to complete a project, no matter how long or entailed the project may be. With a college degree you bring more to the table then just experience, its proof you have a dedication to succeed. A degree shows you put many years of your life aside to complete a goal you set for yourself.

New Friendships and Business Associates Part of a college degrees value is the people you meet while attending college. Majority of the time you meet a diverse group of people sharing the same interest and goals you have. You can create life-long friendships with these people. When you work close with someone, you tend to grow a bond with him or her. Any new friendship is a valuable asset. With a friendship you gain the support of another individual.

This individual most likely has gone through much of what you have, or are going to go through. With his or her knowledge of these situations they can support and help you get through what you are facing. There are many times people you go to school with become business associates. Either in the same company and different departments or in a different company altogether, it is usually good to have an established relationship with them.

Knowing the person that you work with cuts out all of the time it takes to get to know them. Having an established relationship with a co-worker you will spend less time getting acquainted with them, and be able to start working at an efficient pace more rapidly. The more people that you know the better. There may be times in your career when knowing someone that you were in school with may benefit you. If you are out of work or looking to change companies, there may be a person who you were in college with who knows you and is in the position to give you a job. Social Value A college education will help in your social value.

In college you are working with a diverse group of people. This will help your social value by helping you to understand that there are many different people from many different cultures. Just because it is your point of view does not necessarily mean that it is everyone elses point of view. When working with a diverse group of people, you start to understand a broader range of different ethnicity, religion, and social status; this helps you understand the differences between each of them, and helps create an understanding of their opinions and different views of things. (William James) The best claim that a college education can possibly make on your respect, the best thing it can aspire to accomplish for you, is this: that it should help you to know a good man when you see him (1907). Key to the American dream. The National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education says that in todays high-tech economy, Americans believe that a college education has replaced a high school diploma as the gateway to the middle class, according to the most extensive public opinion survey ever conducted about Americans views on higher education.

The National Center for Public Policy and Higher Education stated that the survey, prepared by Public agenda and released nationwide by several independent non-profit organizations, finds that a towering 87 % of Americans believe that a college education has become as important as a high school diploma used to be. And three out of four Americans (76 %) think that there cannot be too many people with education and training beyond high school (2000). The author of the report, is a senior research fellow at Public Agenda and Associate Vice president for Academic Affair at Villanova University. These numbers show that the demand and necessitate of a college education is growing. Without a college degree reaching the American dream is more difficult with each passing year. You are more likely to be denied a promotion, have more difficulties in finding a job, and find it harder to become at least middle-class in social ranking.

With a college education you are more likely to find a job that offers benefits. When entering the workforce as entry-level some of these benefits may be reduced, or completely removed. Obtaining a mid-level job opens the door to better benefits. You are more likely to receive health insurance, 401 K, and a list of other benefits.

Also, when obtaining a mid-level position, majority of the time the company is investing in you and is more appt in paying for these benefits, with less money coming out of your pocket. This paper is the property of getfreeessays. com Copyright 2002 - 2003
