The Emotions of 9 / 11 and the Mechanisms of Defense Terrorism is one of the worst notions that started to happen to humans since the 20 th Century. As a discipline, we posses the skills to assess and respond to both the physical and psychological needs of children in crisis situations. In the setting of a major tragedy, most of the responses will be characterized best as normal reactions to an abnormal situation; approaches that pathologies the reactions of children and adults will seriously impair attempts to deliver supportive services. Within developmental-behavioral pediatrics, we have experience in developing and providing interventions to address developmental variations, common problems or concerns, and normative reactions to challenging situations such as chronic illness and hospitalization. Our field does not require that we view reactions as pathologic or abnormal in order to design and deliver effective interventions to promote coping and adjustment.
