Gandhi the Movie Richard Attenboroughs Gandhi is the portrayal of the live of Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. Gandhi was depicted as an ordinary person, who lives and adjusts to the circumstances of the time and then becomes an extraordinary leader. Gandhi was famous for his response to the racial discrimination, which had changed the empire. The movie shows what a huge impact Gandhi made on India and on its future.

Thanks to Gandhi, the country obtained independence from Britain. The greatest achievement of Gandhi was the unification of Muslims and Hindus, which allowed the country to achieve independence. People of different religions were united under common goal. Moreover, they utilized non-violent tactics of protest. Gandhi was a Hindu, but he was convinced that all people are simply extensions of the one source. In several scenes in the movie, Gandhi expressed that all men are one, merely manifestations from the same starting place.

He fought against not only the British, but also the Indian caste system that relegated certain segments of the society as untouchables. He believed in equality for every man and as a lawyer by trade, he strategies the liberation of his people realizing that through non-violent protest they had the power of God on their side, which was Gandhi's main philosophy. Although many of the Hindus and Moslems did not get along, it was very interesting how they were able to set all those hard feelings aside when they all had the same goals. Gandhi had deep spiritual connection and was a man of strong principles, which proved his true ability to become a leader. In one scene Gandhi recalls how he attended the temple long time ago and the holy man in the temple read from the Hindu scriptures and then from the Koran. This showed Gandhi's attitude towards a person no matter what is a persons religion or race.

The concept of non-violent protest that was developed by Gandhi was a very powerful weapon, which British could not resist or fight back. Gandhi's concept brought needed results, but it also was the reason for Indians and Muslims to have severe losses. The decisive scene of the movie shows a group of Indians lining up four wide and attempting to take a palace by simply walking into it. Guards meet them upon entrance, and when first four approached, guards stroke them with clubs. After that, next four approached and same process happened repeatedly, until with the help of the press it became obvious that Britain has forfeited the moral high ground.

That was exactly what Gandhi needed, because if power would be used Indians would never succeed. Gandhi was right in his beliefs that morality is more powerful than physical power. In the movie Gandhi's wife mentions that Hindus believe that self-control over the desires strengthens the character and aids in spiritual growth. Definitely, all the followers of Gandhi had excellent self-control, because they were acting according to the chosen tactic in order to meet their goals. If they would not have self-control over natural desire to attack / protect , the whole process of liberation would have failed. The fasting and relinquishing of desire are important components of Buddhism, which train an individual to burn away of physical desires which helps to cleanse and purify an individual together with prayer.

I was touched with the scene of Gandhi's assassination. The man who killed Gandhi seemed to be one of Gandhi's followers. Nobody prevented the death of Gandhi by taking the bullet for the leader. However, if to look at this event from the philosophical point of view one may find that it is normal, because according to Buddhism things that are going to happen will eventually happen. The movie was great and Gandhi was a remarkable man to have endured a lot for reaching his goal and being dedicated to his beliefs.

Despite the opposition though, Gandhi remained on the path of God, peaceful, humble and totally in control. In the movie, he shows what a real Buddhist philosophy is.
