In Arthur Millers play The Crucible, the small twn f Salem is engulfed in hysteria due t the accusations f children that many f the townspeople part in witchcraft. The bk des nt incorporate many characters; the plt f the story elves and nly a few people. In this essay I will discuss the tw f them, which I think play the crucial rle in the we story. ne f the accused in the witchcraft people is Jan Prctr, a strong, steadfast farmer. Prctr is the tragic her f the story. Even though he tries t become a her but ends up being ne f the accused.

Prctr tries t remain a tragic her through his efforts t save his wife frm being hung, trying t page the children as frauds, and nt confessing t practicing witchcraft nce he was accused. Prctr is very affected by his panic. The mst vivid example f his blessing is when he tries t save his wife. He level his wife Elizabeth s much that it is an impossible thought fr him t lse her. When the prosecution breaks int his huse he is s infuriated by this assault n his huse that he rips the warrant and tells them t leave rather forcefully saying, Damn the Deputy Governor!

ut f my huse! (77), demonstrating his intense love fr his wife. However, due t the unplanned strategy f the defense, Prctr, when he was trying t page the girls were lying, gets himself t be accused in the criminal act. Thus Jan Prctr fails in trying t rescue his wife frm the clutches f the false accusers, instead he falls pray t them. Prctr establishes that the children are lying in curt with respect t their accusations f the townspeople. Prctr first learns f this through his household servant, Mary Warren wh is ne f the accusers. Prctr deducts frm the events that Mary Warren and Abigail, the lead conspirator, are in cart in trying t kill Prctr's wife by accusing her f witchcraft.

They cme up with the idea f what is basically a vd dll that Mary Warren constructs in curt and gives t Elizabeth. Thought the story Prctr tries t defend his wife, but the panic that takes the possession f him makes Prctr fail. The main read, however, is that Prctr had a lt t lse in his life. The send character, which she the signs f catching a panic attack, was Jan Hale. The author f The Crucible, Arthur Miller, uses many methods t shw what Jan Hales personality is like. The way that Hale speaks gives insight t his personality.

The physical description f Hale allw's us t be able t know what he lks like. What the people f Salem say and think abut Hale lets us know hw he is toward ther people. The behavir's f the people f Salem toward Hale all us t see hw he acts and reacts. The first thing the reader notice abut this character is his erudition. Hale is very much fnd f the bks abut witchcraft. Hale is an expert n witchcraft, but all f his knowledge cme's frm bks.

With his bks, Hale would just be an average person stating an pain. Instead, the bks are his power, his authority. He feels there is little r n questioning f the truthfulness f the written wrd. When Prctr wanted t save his wife and addressed Hale fr help, the latter, fr the sake f his wn protection, refuses t deliver help t Prctr. Hale wants t project himself rather than t g against what the ther's think.

When Hale first arrives he has the respect f mst f the townspeople, but by the end f the story his faith is destroyed and the townspeople n longer respect him. nce again, the person is defeated by his wn panic. The behavir's f the people f Salem toward Hale all us t see hw he acts and reacts. He cme's t Salem confident that he can win the fight against evil. When the townspeople become excited, Hale is the first ne t try and calm things do.

The people brush him aside and their behavior causes him t g frm being bld and confident at the beginning f the story t being tentative and feeling powerless by the end f the story. Hale is a very interesting character because he changes s much frm the beginning f the story t the end f the story due t all f the conflicts taking place. Hale arrives in twn as an arrogant authority, although his source f authority nly lies within the covers f the heavy bks he brings with him. His meddling ultimately triggers the death f many innocent people because he is nt willing t speak ut against their beliefs. He is helpless t stp the witch-hunt and this is made even was fr him because he is basically the ne wh started it in the first place.

The wrd's and behavir's f the townspeople cause his character t change dramatically and this transformation f Hales character makes an interesting foundation fr the entire story. T me the play by Arthur Miller is a gd example f the behavior the people can shw when placed int the extreme conditions when survival f the self is the main and nly gal.
