The Study of Empowerment in Personal and Professional Relationships (1) The concept of empowerment has become very popular in recent years, due to the fact that it can be interpreted in many different ways and give the company or organization the deploys it the reputation of progressive institution. In many instances this term is simply being used to please the watchdogs of political correctness, since many sociologists suggest that persons empowerment is best accomplished as part of diversification process. Basically, the individuals working capacity is considered of being dependent on its ethnic background awareness. According to psychologists, if such awareness exists, it will automatically allow individual to freely explore its inner hidden abilities, thus making such individual more valuable from social and professional prospective.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze different aspects of empowerment, as socio-political theory. It will enable us to conclude of whether this concept has any practical value or we deal with just another fashionable notion, in the field of sociology and psychology. We live in time when it is no longer needed to understand the true essence of social doctrines; all that is needed is ones ability of finding an orientation through them. The specifics of contemporary political dynamics is that its terminology is becoming ever more vague, causing a so-called counter understanding effect, when people operate with scientific terms, without realizing what do they really stand for. Gradually, such terminology turns into the set of catch phrases or libels. The concept of empowerment comes as a very good example.

People are being continuously told that theyll be able to excel socially and professionally, once empowered. A countless empowerment seminars emphasize on the importance of every individual being able to fully realize its capabilities. Professional psychologists are paid as much as 50 dollars per hour to simply talk about the empowerment to people, without providing them with any concrete techniques of how accomplish it on practical level. In my opinion, the concept of empowerment is based on the wrong principle. It assumes that all the people are equal and it is only a social circumstances that account for the fact that only handful of individuals become successful throughout their lives. But this contradicts the scientifically proven fact that ones IQ depends almost exclusively on biological factors.

It is highly doubtful whether anyone with IQ of 85 can be effectively empowered. At the same time, there is no doubt that self-realization can be a totally legitimate personal goal. But since every individual is unique, it appears as quite improbable that a third party could guide the empowerment process. In this paper we will look at different aspects of empowerment at workplace, in interpersonal situations and will try to define its role in gender issues (2) The Encyclopedia Britannica defines empowerment as: 1) giving official authority or legal power to, 2) enabling, 3) promoting self-actualization or influence. In our case we will focus on the third definition, as it directly corresponds to the essence of discussed issue.

It has to be noted we can only talk of promotion of empowerment and not of imposing it, which became a common practice in many American institutions that want to comply with the policies of political correctness in this country. The empowerment in workplace stands for promoting employees self-actualization, which meant to increase their professional effectiveness. There are three commonly accepted principles of doing it. The first is self-awareness training, when employees are being taught of how to discover their true potential.

This is done through encouraging them to feel at ease in their relations with managers. The relaxed behavioral mode is believed to have a positive effect on the working environment. The example of many American retail companies that use a weekly lunches and "wacky follow-up sessions" as replacements for first-round job interviews, is very representative in this respect. There seems to be only one concern involved with this method of screening whether persons ability to mingle can substitute for his professional qualities.

As practice shows, an excessive promotion of team spirit in every company, serves as the ultimate mean of making additional profits at the expense of employees. During their training, the employees in such companies are required to continuously improve their social interaction skills. Sill, such empowerment is being usually done at the expense of lowering workers professional qualities. Therefore, it cannot be seriously considered as something that will really benefit commercial organizations in the long run.

The second method is so-called diversity celebration training. Basically it requires employees to be proud of their ethnic backgrounds. Nevertheless, only blind cant see that it will ultimately lead to the ethnic secularism in workplace, which is only going to divert employees from their primary duties. There are many instances reported of employees complaining that they were being discriminated against because of their nationality, while in fact, the real reason for them to be fired was simple they couldnt speak English. It appears that it would be much more beneficial for workers, who come to America from Third World countries, to be empowered by learning the basics of English language, rather than being told that their ancestors had created ancient Egyptian civilization. Many companies also practice a mental clearing technique to help employs to get rid of their cultural or religious prejudices, which are believed to negatively affect their performance.

I think that only this method can be thought as truly effective, because it strives to enable workers to make more money, as the ultimate mean of empowerment. It is important not to confuse economy and psychology, as it is practiced in some companies like McDonalds. The workers there are required to work extra time if needed, without a pay. This is because that they are thought of being empowered by accepting the notion of team spirit Companies that actively practice innovative training methods claim that their foremost concern is making it easier for candidates to enroll.

Still, what theyre really after is the most efficient exploitation of their workers. I think that there is only one effective way to help employees with finding their hidden capabilities increasing their salaries. Everything else appears to be of no value, unless these political-correct empowerment techniques are to be used by creators of Simpsons to make another social parody. The empowerment in interpersonal situations suggests that peoples ability to freely express their thoughts accounts for their overall well-being.

It is no secret that many cases of depression psychologists explain by the lack of communication. And its not that people dont have anybody to talk to, they simply have difficulties finding a connection link with others. Usually, it happens because they have a certain psychological barriers that prevent them from opening themselves up. Such barriers are based on individuals complex of inferiority. Also, various religious and cultural prejudices do not allow such people to develop a bonds of trust with those who they percept as different. Therefore, the main method to empower individual, so that he would be able to enjoy communicational advantages, is to enhance its sense of worthiness.

There is no widely accepted term for this method, but majority of psychologists refer to it as manifestation guidance. Its based on the assumption that there can be no an unwanted worldviews in democratic society, on the part of citizens. That is why this method of empowerment encourages people to verbally manifest their visions, in order to prove to themselves that they cannot be wrong in a priori, since the worldviews of others also do not have the universal properties. This, in its turn, helps people to percept world from organic prospective. They get to be empowered by realizing themselves as important elements of universe, rather than thinking that they are only social nucleus, with no particular purpose to live for. Very often people feel insecure because they cannot understand the nature of political and social dynamics in this country.

It is the case when psychology does not have anything to do with the issue. Citizens should simply be taught the basics of political process in America and their role in it. Even realizing the fact that the democracy couldnt possibly function in U. S. , if it wasnt up to the regular citizens, will empower them enormously.

It is important that people feel that the better prospects in life, promised by the promoters of empowerment, are not based on illusory preconceptions. This is why the realism plays a crucial role in it. It is a mistake to think of empowerment techniques as some kind of abstract theories. As a matter of fact, they are nothing but a practical tool, which should benefit individuals materially. There are many wealthy people that have a hard time explaining themselves, because of their low intellectual level, yet they dont posses psychological complexes over it. America is a materialist country, the wealthy automatically means worthy.

Therefore, I think, it is a mistake to base interpersonal empowerment methods on some new-age ideas, which have very little to do with peoples real lives. When we talk of empowerment in the field of gender relations, we automatically associate it with feminist movement in this country. This, of course, can only be explained by the fact that this issue is really artificial, to the large degree. Although, it is implied that the representatives of both genders are the subjects of empowerment, this is strictly the womens issue. Women simply want to be able to match man intellectually and physically, but it appears as very doubtful of whether this can be accomplished through rediscovering itself, since biology always wins in confrontation with psychology. It is very symbolic that most of the men think that empowerment in gender issues applies to the enhancing of their sexual powers, rather than to anything else.

Nevertheless, we cant suggest that this concept is utterly senseless, since it puts bread on the table of those numerous experts that exploit it in front of naive audiences In one of Simpsons episodes, Homer is being asked to work on improving the safety at nuclear station, so he just started telling his coworkers to stop being so unsafe or to safe up. It is the same with the promoters of empowerment among women. They simply engage in verbal equilibrist ics, without telling people anything new. We cannot think of any models of empowerment in effective communication as such that has proven itself to be fully effective. This is due to the fact that this concept is comparatively innovative and there are definitely no rules and principles, related to it, that we can consider as classical.

Nevertheless, there are still a few guidelines that are being usually used, when it comes to enhancing peoples communicational skills. The most important of them is increasing ones vocabulary reserve, by the old-fashioned method of learn and memorize. The new level of self-awareness is accomplished here by being able to apply an appropriate terms to different aspects of ones own existence. But it has to be kept in mind that the peoples ability to operate with abstract categories is mostly defined by their biological predetermination, as the theory of Bell Curve points out. Therefore, applying empowerment in the field of communications can only prove to be advantageous, if its practical features include understanding of the main principles that communication is based upon.

In 2003, 20 students from University of California have volunteered to sign up for experimental communication empowerment course, which lasted for two weeks. In the end, it turned out that this course did not result in considerable improvement of students communicational skills, as it was expected. This shows that the effectiveness of contemporary empowerment techniques is largely exaggerated, to say the least (3) To summarize this paper it needs to be said that, although there are many helpful aspects in the theory of empowerment, its practical applications can never become fully effective, unless the emphasis is being shifted from doctrinal pursuit of universal equality to helping individual to become more successful, through development of natural traits of its character. I would suggest that those who research this topic in the future paid more attention to the true meaning of related scientific terminology. In order to not being misled by the artificial sophistication of empowerment-related vocabulary, we need to remember Plato's advice, who said that every thing needs to be examined about what it is in itself, before we come to understanding of its true nature. The simplicity is what helps us to distinguish genuine notions from false ones.

It is very likely that itll be harder to maintain scientific integrity, while researching the issue of empowerment in the future. This is because, in my opinion, this psychological techniques genuine purpose is far from the declared one. The example of McDonalds restaurants that use it for more effective exploitation of its workers, show us that empowerment sessions can be a very effective brainwashing tool. It is not a secret that many promoters of empowerment heavily rely of the hypnosis As old saying goes, the man will eventually turn into the pig, if hes being continuously referred to as such.

The same applies to the reversed situation. This study was primarily focused on philosophical aspects of empowerment theory. In my opinion, it is a proper approach, as it provides the researcher with a strategic prospective onto the discussed issue. To finish this paper, we need to lay down its conclusions: 1) The social and professional empowerment is more of a catch-phrase than a serious scientific theory 2) The vagueness of its definitions makes them susceptible to be easily corrupted 3) There is no factual evidence that empowerment methods are as effective, as their promoters would like them to appear.
