Lessons Learned In all four stories there is notion of people getting a lesson through their experiences. Manfouz's Happy man is a story of person, who suddenly felt very happy, after waking up in the morning. There was no apparent reason for him to feel that way, so he continued to wonder about what was the real cause of this. Only after having visited a psychiatrist, had he realized that his happiness had a mental nature, since he was asked to start coming to doctors office twice a week Leo Tolstoy's story Enough Land for the Man is about the man who wanted to acquire more and more land, so he could grow more vegetables on it. This caused him to work for longer hours on his land and resulted in his death from exhaustion, in the end. Apparently, all the land he ever needed was limited by the size of his grave.
Tolstoy's story is heavily influenced by Christian motives. Thank You Mam by Langston Hughes is about boy who wanted to steal a purse from the lady. He failed with its original task, getting caught by this lady instead. Yet, she never took him to police, as he thought she was going to do. Instead, she brought him to her home and asked the boy to share dinner with her. She made him to wash his face and gave him a lecture about good manners.
In the end, when he was leaving, she gave him 10 dollars to buy what he wanted The First Lesson by Phyllis McGinley is about the lesson that men must learn: How you have a journey to take and very likely, for a while, will not return. It is hard to come up with clear idea about what author wanted to say by this. Probably, she tried to tell the reader that since men are different from women psychologically, it takes patience, on their part, to understand women. There is no doubt that the characters in all four stories learn a lesson of some sort. Happy mans lesson appears to be realization of the fact that it is better not to analyze its feelings rationally, especially when theyre associated with happiness. The hero of Tolstoy's story learns that he didnt need much land, after all.
Although, by the time he learns this lesson, hes no longer among living. It is not very likely that he will be changed because of what he learned Mcginley's The First Lesson is highly metaphorical piece; therefore it is not very easy to figure out what kind of lesson could be found in her poem. The mostly likely, this lesson is the lesson of patience. Hughes boy learned not to steal things, because the lady showed him that it was morally wrong.
His lesson was the lesson of humility. There is no doubt that the boy is being changed, in the end of story, because of his newly acquired guilty consciousness.
