Vagina Monologues The last century, before downfall of Roman Empire, was signified with staging huge gladiators shows in Coliseum by the emperors, who sought public support. The only way to attract marginalized population to these shows, at the time, was making them more shocking and graphic. Only a direct onslaught on peoples senses could vitalize them for a while When people do not care about anything but intensify their anomalistic feelings, it means that they slowly degrade. Vagina Monologues is the ultimate expression on Western cultural degradation. Even though the play tries to disguise itself as progressive, it is essentially play about nothing, since women are well aware of the issues, raised in it. It is not the graphical aspects of this play that appalled me, while I was watching it.
No its the fact that Eve Ensler was giving the impression that she really thinks that her play has great cultural value, while only psychiatrists can be genuinely interested in it. The majority of people, who came to watch it, have left the theatre with the feeling that they were being cheated, because the only shocking thing about the play was is its name! This is nothing but a very cheep trick on the part on Eve Ensler, who considers herself as forerunner of womens liberation in our times. I think that Ensler's original intention was to produce a some kind of public joke, which would result in limited (like her mind) commercial success. But when left-wing medias began praising this play to the sky, she also started to think that her play has a universal importance. As a matter of fact, Ensler degrade women, instead of helping them to get rid of their psychological complexes.
This is because she portrays womens issues as revolving around their genitalia. Even when they talk about politics, art or science somehow they manage to maintain the feeling of sexual tension, while they do it. Men would never do this, because they can mentally detach themselves from their penises. Women cant act similarly, as they simply cannot see their vaginas!
Therefore, men are only sexual from time to time, which allows them to engage in other activities and gain excellence in them, while women are always sexual. Their whole lives revolve around sex and this is exactly the reason why, according to social surveys, 70 % of women in USA watch soap operas - they correspond to womens inner desires. Women look at the world through lenses of sex This is a conclusion that I came to, after having watched a play, although I was supposed to be made more respectful of womens issues. Vagina Monologues only makes mens superstitions even stronger. Although, intended to ease dialog between genders, this play actually complicates it. We witness the same cultural phenomenon, which came as a result of people viewing Malevitch masterpiece Black Square for the first time they thought that it was a very deep painting, because it appeared so simple, while any 5 year old child could produce the same.
There is story of naked king socializing with his court, while everyone thinks that their vision is being impaired, because they could not believe it, before someone yelled the King is naked! . The same can be said about Vagina Monologues, its basically nothing but stupid play of some stupid lady, who is so bored with herself that she cant find anything better to do than daring middle-age housewives to explore their sexuality. This topic is being so much abused that I simply cannot understand, how come many people refer to Monologues as innovative. Society is becoming overly politically correct, since a lot of people simply afraid to express their true feelings, in regard of certain plays.
During the performance I heard many people whispering about their disgust, yet they wouldnt say it openly, since theyre afraid of sexist label. I think that Ensler's masterpiece, instead of being performed on the stage, should be brought to the dump, where it really belongs.
