Homeschooling Children Homeschooling is relatively new educational concept. It emerged as result of parents realization that the traditional system of childrens education has many deficiencies. Even though more and more parents decide in favor of homeschooling for their children, the critics of this educational method still point out to its numerous shortcomings. The biggest disadvantage of homeschooling they consider to be the fact that it deprives children of social skills, which are essential for their further integration into society.

This, of course, is a valid fear. Practice shows that very often, high-quality education is not the most important factor, when it comes to children becoming successful. What really matters, in this respect, is their ability to interact under different social circumstances. Even though, it is a fact that biological factors largely predetermine such ability, nevertheless, we cant disregard the importance external influences.

The proponents of homeschooling suggest that the social interaction is something that can also be accomplished at home. Heather Madrone in her article Homeschooling: Questions says that: If there were no other reason to homeschool, the social interactions that children have at school would be enough to make me consider it. Basically, the family is a far superior social environment to any age-segregated institutionalized setting. Children learn best how to get along from their parents and from people of all ages, not from fellow 6 year olds (Madrone). This, of course, is a quite controversial statement, but it also shows that the issue of socialization doesnt necessarily have much to do with the educational process itself. Surveys show that children most actively interact in playground and not at their school desks.

In early age, interaction skills are acquired through childrens subconscious drive to dominate. This is why we have nerds and bullies in every public school. Apparently, childrens leadership qualities do not depend on the level of their participation in social processes, but on the size of their muscles alone. From this, we can conclude that child can study at home and still posses social awareness, as long as hes being physically active. David Coflax in his book Homeschooling for Excellence says: Kids that study at home are seldom, if ever, socially isolated. Indeed, precisely because they have more opportunities to interact with a wide range of people, they tend to become more socially competent and socially responsible at an earlier age than most of their conventionally schooled peers" (Colfax 101).

There are many others objections to homeschooling, such as lack of teachers skills on he part of parents and the fact that teaching children at home is more costly than having them to attend public schools. At the same time, there are very good reasons for parents to spend some time, considering what kind of education will prove to be the most beneficial to their kids. In many cases, the second choice proves to be less costly Homeschooling critics say that the real reason for many parents to favor this educational approach is that it allows them to instill their children with an outdated Christian morality, while in public schools, kids learn very fast the true value of Jesus commandments. But, as a matter of fact, many parents prefer homeschooling for just the opposite reason.

It would be a mistake to think that certain psychological alienation can only be attributed to homeschooling, as educational method. Many sociologists point out that many school kids today feel isolated from the grown-up world and alienated from parents, who fail to take an interest in their lives and to set boundaries for their behavior. The equality at school is accomplished at the expense of lowering educational standards.

Only this can guarantee that they will grow up into independent and responsible adults. Yet, it is not a secret that childs independent behavior at school often becomes the subject of punishment. This can never happen at home, unless parents engage in Bible thumping, instead of teaching their kids something useful. There is no doubt that the system of homeschooling would prove itself as being vastly superior to traditional one, if only Christian fundamentalists were forbidden from applying it to their own children.

They are the ones who give homeschooling a bad name. The advantages of homeschooling greatly overweight its negative aspects. Besides of what we have already mentioned, we can also name: safe learning conditions, higher quality of academic material and flexible hours for studying. It wouldnt be too daring to suggest that many more positive effects of homeschooling would become apparent to us, as this educational method gets to be practiced by more and more parents. While gathering a reading material for this paper, Ive never came across of even a single negative comment on homeschooling from the parents who tried it. Former homeschoolers reaction also appears to be unanimous, when theyre asked to reflect upon their educational experiences at home.

It is wrong to think that people, who promote homeschooling, are also trying to undermine public education at the same time. The principle of competitiveness is crucial to the normal functioning of social institutions in America; we might as well apply it to the field of childrens education.
