... classes are lecture whether they are in the classroom setting, on video or via teleconference. So once again I am faced with the predicament of going through lectures. In my adult life it is still a challenge for me to listen to a lecture because I find myself yawning, nodding, lost in space and unfocused during the presentation. I must improve in this area because the information that is presented in these lectures is important.
The online lectures arent a problem for me because I can complete assignments at my own pace. The lectures for the Managerial Communication class were formatted well in that they were simple, short and to the point. I realize that the future lectures may not be in this format but having the freedom to complete them when and where I want helps resolve the issue. Though, when it came to subjects like history and language, I felt I would die before the end of the class period. These classes were about an hour, but seemed to last for two or three hours. I could not get into the class or really enjoy it because it was mostly lecture.
Lecture has never been a favorite or enjoyable way for having information presented to me. This has been an area that I have had to improve in and I am still working on it. I had to realize that in college I was going to encounter several lectures and if I had any intentions on graduating from college I would have to conquer this problem. There is less significant, but equally important, experience I am obtaining while being a University of Phoenix student. I meet new people, and get involved with more social events. I am not a very outgoing or extroverted person.
It is especially hard for me to meet people with common interests and goals. Since the University of Phoenix consists of working adults, in my age group, it is very easy to find like-minded individuals. The structure of the University, with its learning teams, also helps me get over that apprehension of socializing. This structure also gives me the possibility to network and learn about other peoples experiences in their careers and lives.
A great deal can be learned through other peoples successes and failures. Perhaps I will also gain a better understanding of which direction I would like to take in my own career. There may be obstacles in the pathway to my goals. Fear of failure is the most prominent of these obstacles.
However, I have learned through life experience, that I cannot let that fear stop me from excelling. I do not want to put myself in that position again, where I let self doubt get in the way of what is really important for my future. Not only does fear of failure and self-doubt hinder my overall plan in life, but it also proves very costly and time consuming. Any other obstacles I may encounter would be minimal. Life, itself, may sometimes get in the way of my goals. I have not yet been blessed with children, but that is something that may take place while I am attending the University of Phoenix.
Unexpected emergencies may arise at any given moment. Nevertheless, I plan to hurdle any obstacles that may develop in order to accomplish my goals. Future I believe that one never stops learning. We have opportunity to learn every moment of our lives, be in the time of day or the secret to growing old gracefully. Therefore, I am committed to being a lifelong learner. With that, I accept the fact that I may face many challenges and opportunities for growth.
I believe that my decision to pursue a Bachelor's degree speaks to my dedication to lifelong learning. Further, I believe that the attainment of a graduate degree will not only allow for a competitive advantage in career advancement, it will also allow for an increase in salary requirement, and offer an enhancement of professional and personal growth as it pertains to the advancement of my career goals. Another opportunity for growth is in the area of my communication skills. Often considered a strong speaker, I believe that there are areas that do call for improvement, such as public speaking, vocabulary and language articulation. I feel that as the opportunities for me to speak publicly continue to grow, I become more comfortable with it. I think that my true challenge is facing the nervousness that often comes over me as I face a new crowd of faces.
Prior to a speaking engagement I practice in front of a mirror and ultimately in front of a group of friends. This has proven to be a beneficial activity, as it allows me to get constructive criticism. I am confident about how I speak to others in a professional environment, however at times I find myself at a loss for words. At first, I thought that maybe it was age starting to take affect. However, I soon realized that my vocabulary was not as advanced as it is required to be in a professional environment. (Di Mauro, 2000) Using correct grammar or speech can mean the difference of pay scales.
Additionally, I believe that the knowledge of a second language is not only necessary but also imperative, in order to stay competitive in the current job market. Stating what I want to achieve as a University of Phoenix student is causing me to shift my focus. When I began class, my thought was to receive a four-year degree. Now, I realize my goals will be changing as I learn.
The views brought to my attention in the first class are extremely varied; could it be I have not searched for a goal that is admirable, that just wanting a piece of paper is not a viable goal. First, I going to finish my Bachelor program in doing so it will teach me some needed skills, to advance myself in the employment arena. Next, some of the organizational skills I have for groups I will turn on myself to further my growth experience. I still like the fact that I have a laid back personality, but I think I need to get a little excited some times. Excitement can lead to a greater amount of creativity and creativity can lead to larger variety jobs. For me the bottom line is money and my strengths and opportunities will allow the growth I need.
Next, my goal is to get the most out of each course I take, apply what I learn from each classroom experience, and improve what I do my workplace. I will help others, which I work with, to expand and improve their environment, through self-improvement. In turn, this will also help me improve myself. I will pass each course confident that I am doing my personal best. I will learn through participation and increase my listening skills. I will not allow the interruptions of other well- meaning students break my concentration, but listen to what they have to say and find a way to apply it to school, home, or the workplace.
I will improve my study skills and be able to use them in school and work. Already, I have learned new techniques through the required reading material. It is now a matter of applying the correct type for me. I will have the opportunity to relearn the basic education skills. Once again, I will be proficient in mathematics.
I look forward to comprehending using algebra in day-to-day applications. I used procedures that were acceptable to the management I worked for knowing that is was incorrect. Now, I will be aware of what I am sending and make every effort to have it reflect the fact that I am responsible for its content, and I am responsible for making my company look professional. I am looking forward to learning how to manage more effectively. Thus, I would like to attend leadership development workshops on a continuous basis to stay up to date. Short Term Goals The short term goals that I have set to succeed as a Business Management student at the University of Phoenix with a minimum B average are: Complete all required reading assignments by taking a minimum of two (2) hours each day to read.
Complete all required individual assignments by dedicating four (4) hours on the weekend Complete all team assignments by meeting weekly every Monday and Friday Manage my time and schedule to ensure that my work project commitments do not interfere with my classroom attendance. Leverage previous work and training knowledge that can be translated into an adult learning skill. The short term goals outlined above have the necessary focus and detail to help me succeed as a student at University of Phoenix. It is important to provide specific details on how to use the time to achieve my short term goals or I may incur the risk of failure. Gross (1999) wrote, "Your commitments can overwhelm you unless you decide how to use time to plan your steps toward goal achievement" (p. 329). It requires a great deal of discipline to dedicate time each day and on the weekend to read and finish assignments.
It also requires that you balance work and schooling with the ones you love back home, because without their support you will not succeed. Short term goals help to maintain progress towards achieving long-term goals. Long Term Goals My long term goal of graduating with a Business Management degree is to further advance my current and future career goals. I took an interest in Business Management when my management career led me to a challenging and rewarding career in Project Management.
This has provided me with the learned values of leadership, teamwork and excellence. These are the core values that I guide my life choices and decisions. Gross (1999) stated, "When you use your values as a compass for your goals, make sure the compass is pointed in the direction of your real feelings" (p. 333) A Business Management Degree will provide the foundation to further develop my core values and apply them to my future career goals. Concerning additional degrees to pursue in future I have thought about going on for a Masters in Business and later possibly a Law degree. Lifelong learning is a necessity for every business expert.
Times are changing. Thus has become crucial the need to study new things and keep pace with these changes. I realize I need to develop more serious about my professional growth. My improvement strategy for growth is to continue on the path that I am on now. No matter how hard this Bachelors gets, I am going to keep on learning and not give up. I know that Stress Management also will by a very important ingredient in this path.
Another way of improvement is by keeping myself updated on news and current events. I read daily newspapers and utilize the Internet to gain access to other knowledge based resources. I am confident that use of all of these tools will allow me to continue to remain competitive in today's job market.
