The work is devoted to the description of what is different between the God conceptions of Christianity and Judaism. The main objective is to show that nevertheless there are differences between the ways how Christians and Judaists see and perceive God, all religions are similar and have the same roots. Judaism and Christianity have different books (the Bible and the Torah respectively) which describe God. The work is written in order to show that there are really differences in how people of different religions see God. To start with, it might be better to find who God is, and what the general concepts of Judaism and Christianity are. According to the Columbia Encyclopedia, 2004, God is defined as divinity of the three great monotheistic religions, Judaism, Christianity and Islam, as well as many other world religions. (Columbia Encyclopedia, 2004).

There are also different names that are used for naming God in different books. For example, Hebrews in their literature call God Adonai (which means The Lord). There are also such names as Jehovah and Yahweh. Both of them can be considered to be right, and even in their sounding they are alike. The general conception of God is the following: it is an infinite being who does not belong to time and space, who is omniscient and omnipotent, and who loves people and can do, see and hear everything that is going on in the world. In monotheistic religions God is a central omnipotent higher essence, who has created the world and everything that is living.

He is considered to be absolute Kindness and Love. In most religions God is presented by some personality (for example, in Christianity, in which God is presented in Trinity), and in few religions God is faceless. The image of one and single God is called Monotheism and Christianity together with Judaism and Islam are monotheistic religions. Cultural and historical image of God is the central notion of most religions. There has existed the image of God as a highest intellect, not always governing all world processes. No man has seen God in any time. (John, 1: 18).

So, whats the image of God in Christianity? The first thing that comes to our mind is that God is eternal. According to the Christianity, God is the initial and the preceding to the world essence, who is omnipotent and knows everything, and is the Creator of everything material and non-material in the world. Gods being cannot be comprehended but there can be found spiritual unity with him. In the Old and New Testaments there is a great emphasis made on the Oneness of God, which means that Christians believe in One God: To you it was shown that you might know the Lord, He is God; there is no other God besides Him. (John, 5: 44).

They believe in One God who is concentrated in three representatives Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God in Christianity is the one who gave start to everything in the world. And Christianity absolutely rejects everything that is more than one God. And one of the basic concepts of Christianity is the Trinity, about which it should be said a little bit more as it is going to be one of the main notions which differs Christianity from Judaism. So, Christians believe that God is one in three personalities. What does this mean?

These elements are not separate, but God shows himself in Father, Son and the Holy Spirit. Lets take the Sun, for example. If we take two its attributes light and warmth they are inseparable from the sun, but without them sun wont be the sun anymore. So, its still one sun, but it is shown to us through these three attributes. The same thing can be said about God in Christianity. Plus these three attributes never contradict with each other.

This means they make up one essence Christian God. The concept of Trinity has always existed for Christians. And the dogma of Trinity cant be simply comprehended for this is not a rational notion. And belief in Trinity makes Christianity different from all other religions. The three main notions of the Trinity theory are the following: 1. God appears in three faces Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. 2.

Each Face of God is God, but there are no three Gods, but one single essence. 3. All three Faces differ from each other by their personal attributes. The concept of Christian Trinity also states that there not three separate faces, but three Faces that are of the same Holy Origin, and God is the Unity of these three displays. Despite the fact that Christianity was based on Judaism, there are many differences in how God is presented in both religions. The main thing, is that there is the teaching about God in Christianity, which is absent in Judaism and other religions. Which is peculiar only to Christianity is that God is Love.

In other religions the image of God is depicted as of holy, merciful and fair judge, and nothing more; that's all that religious conscience in other religions was able to achieve. Christianity asserts something special: God is Love and only Love. Unfortunately, this understanding of God hardly finds its path to the man's heart and soul. The specifics of this image is that it has only edifying and pastoral character, and is meant for simple people.

The essence of God's understanding in Christianity is Love and only Love. God does not feel anything different: anger, vengeance, etc. but when one hears something like God will punish you it is necessary to understand that God does not have these feelings and all these expressions are used only for simple people to understand the essence of religion. As for Torah, it presents the concept of the Single God, having three integral characteristics: transcendence, personality and normativeness. Transcendent essence of God is displayed in principle rejection of myth in Torah.

There is not a word in the book about the birth of God, about any facts from his life and no descriptions of his appearance. Torah's God does not belong to the material world and is not a part of it. He is some other higher essence standing above the world. God is absolutely different and is far from everything material and is deprived of any material origin, that's why God doesn't appear to men in human appearance. Meeting with God means some kind of spiritual contact. Purely spiritual essence of God makes him different from any other essence in the world.

God in Torah does not submit to any other powers, and is dependent on nothing except himself. There is no other power greater than God, and God is the absolute owner of the world. One of the considerable differences of Judaism from Christianity is that in Torah God reveals only to Israel, being universal at the same time. He is not connected with any specific place. Torah forms the notion of God as the Unity, which creates the world and everything in it, separates light from darkness, makes good and evil, or what we perceive to be evil.

Satan in Judaism is not an equal force opposite to God as it is in Christianity, but is the server of God. Torah's attitude towards God lies in considering him as only some spiritual being. But being transcendent is not being unique. The uniqueness of the new presentation of God which is opened in Torah is that besides transcendence God has also got two other integral attributes he is personal and normative.

The understanding of God as being personal implies the presence of the powerful origin that creation of the world is the display of God's power. God is not simply an unlimited essence, but is also absolute power. He creates the world and wants the man to behave in this world according to his norms and wishes. And this is also the proof of God's power. Personality of God allows humans to build their relations with God and to have direct dialogue with him. It's hard to understand how God can be transcendent and personal at the same time.

The relations of people and God take the central place in Torah. The whole monotheistic religion of Judaism is based on striving to God and not on considerations about God. And this is the very new approach to understanding God in Torah. Believing in one God is built on the highest faithfulness towards him, this faithfulness demands all man's personality to be given to him, and there is no patience in the relations between God and man.

The man can't address other gods. Personality of God in Judaism leads us to other God's attribute normativeness. God dictates certain norms of behavior to the man. And this attribute also seems to contradict to his first characteristics transcendence, because while describing God who demands social fair from the man, God displays human traits, and thus seems to destroy his transcendent essence. In fact his normativeness is equal to his personality.

Being personal, God directly communicates with people and makes it obligatory to follow his norms of behavior. And the man fulfils his striving to God through following all his norms. God here is the source of moral values. And moral in Torah becomes absolute.

According to Judaism, God is one and he is the most perfect Unity. And there is no other absolute essence in the Universe except for God who is the Creator of everything. Judaism absolutely rejects any plurality in terms of God, and it also rejects the notion of Trinity, which is the basic for Christianity. And as far as any new element...
