Ethical Issue Analysis The ethical issues can usually be characterized by three criteria: ideals, obligations and consequences. These are social terms, as ethical problems usually arise within society, consisting of people with different ethical values. In Western societies, the idea of multiculturalism is being promoted on many different levels recently and those whore in favor of this concept assure us that there are no real ethical consequences of this policy, but only cultural ones. Is it really so? The article French scarf ban comes into force, which appeared on Bbc's Web site on September 2, 2004 deals with the issue of French governments ban on openly displaying religious symbols in public schools.
Although, officially this ban is indiscriminate It forbids state school students from wearing "conspicuous" religious apparel. Jewish skullcaps, large Christian crosses are also banned, everybody understand that this will primarily affect French's large Muslim and Sikh population. These people usually wear turbans and, in general, are very ignorant of culture of a country where they came to live, mostly by using illegal means. Ideally, there shouldnt be any problems with cultural diversity in French society, as this society is ruled by democratic principles. French Constitution proclaims equality of all of its citizens.
Yet, the concept of democracy in this country comes as a reflection of native French populations ideals of what is right and wrong, beautiful and ugly, moral and not. The perception of democracy is different between French white and non-white populations, because from native point of view, democracy suppose to serve national unity, while for many new immigrants, democracy is only a mean that allows them to pursue their own secular agendas. Different people have different moral ideals, upon which they base their moral perceptions In democratic country, rights and freedoms are limited by social obligations that guarantee the normal functioning of society. The principle of equality applies these obligations to all citizens, regardless of their cultural backgrounds or their social status. In western societies, obligations are not enforced. It is up to every individual to follow the unwritten law of common good.
The right to participate in national elections is also considered being an obligation of every citizen, yet as a whole, they both constitute a certain privilege. This can only happen when society enjoys national unity. In this respect, Muslims demands to be excluded from law that is equally applied to all, is nothing but an act that undermines French national unity. Apparently, Muslims in France want to enjoy all the civil rights, yet they protest the fact that they, as members of society, are also under social obligations. In my opinion, those Muslims who live in France and dont want to be under any obligations, always have a choice of returning to their home countries, where they can enjoy their customs and traditions to its fullest.
French government finally begins to act according to its countrys national interests The consequences of turban ban in France are not hard to foresee. Apparently, national minorities are not going to be happy with it, yet nothing comes free in this world this is the price theyre going to pay for the privilege of living in developed European country. There is no doubt that this act of French government is fully justified. It has a moral right to act according to the will of native Frenchmen. The ban is designed to maintain France's tradition of strictly separating state and religion. said French governments spokesman.
In the long run, even those who protest against this ban in France now, will realize its benefits to every member of society. The major consequence of turban ban will come in form of insuring France to remain among civilized countries of the world, where concepts of state and religion are separated.
