Groundwater The ecological problems are discussed every day by the world and there are many aspects and issues worth of attention. The pollution of groundwater's is of a great significance as well. There are many researches conducted by different institutions, many articles published on this issue, many discussions taking place. In order to follow the changes in groundwater reserves there are special groundwater-level change maps are created by certain Universities and this way one can predict an approximate development of this significant resource.
Unfortunately the latest maps do not promise anything positive but show that the world reserve of groundwater has a tendency towards the rapid decline. For example, the latest maps made in the United States which shows groundwater level changes between spring 2002 and spring 2003, indicates groundwater declines of from less than a foot to more than five feet over much of Nebraska, particularly in the heavily irrigated Platte, Republican, Loup, Blue and Elkhorn River basins. (The Gothenburg Time) Such maps, researches are conducted almost every country and these in their part study the situation in individual regions. It especially applies to regions and districts where the situation is really precarious. One of the latest studies in India has revealed terrible facts Punjab has 17 districts. About 10 of these do not get any canal water. They irrigate through tube wells.
Ground water has fallen to dangerously low levels. An unofficial but fairly detailed survey conducted by The Tribune management had found that at most places, water level has gone down from 20 to 30 ft. After few years it may not remain possible to irrigate by this method either. (The Indian Express) Some of the district do not even get water at all but they are forced to depend exclusively on rains which is certainly unacceptable. This region, Punjab, is an agricultural one and especially for that reason the question must be formulated strictly. This is the a question of carnival for that region, Punjab is passing through a tense situation today. The events of the next few months will determine whether the state is going to maintain its lead in agriculture or not.
And lets face it, the livelihoods of migrants from many states depend on the agricultural prosperity of Punjab. (The Indian Express) This is not just a single instance but one of many which we might not even guess about. One of the examples is situation at Skytop Mountain. About 900, 000 cubic yards of pyritic rock lie in spoil piles and fill area near the Interstate 99 construction site at Skytop. Exposed to air and water since they were unearthed for a road cut last year, the rocks produce sulfuric acid, which dissolves heavy metals and imperils Buffalo Run, North Bald Eagle Creek and groundwater. (Mike) There has been made a number of attempts to protect the water but these all just unpretentious attempts without any serious solution. This aquifer is the only significant source of groundwater available within the Bald Eagle Valley and will be called upon to meet the growing demands for water resulting from economic activity stimulated by the completion of I- 99. (Mike) These are only a few out of the problems, situation around groundwater's. In spite of the fact that this problem is sort of hidden under the ground one must not forget about it but think about possible consequences and remember that we, humans, depend on this ressource as well as on many others.
Avoiding this problem will not solve it but statement of facts and their analysis can give everybody to understand that every single issue and aspect of the environmental problems is worth of our attention and solution.
