The Roles of Females in Dramatic Literature Women have always fought for independence from men from the earliest days of existence. In earlier centuries it was not as powerful as a movement as it is today because so many more women push for independence than they did before. Yet, many women in the past have fought for their independence even until death. We know very little about these women because they were suppressed and not told about. Only a few of their stories found their way into storytellers hands. Antigone was not a typical woman...

Most women at the time of her life had to accept the decision of a man. Antigone looked to a high power for her decisions that were different to the laws enacted by the men of her time. She than lived her life by what she thought was right. Antigone heroism and strength was much more valuable because her goal was so ideal and her life was cut extremely short. Katherine was a foul-tempered and sharp-tongued woman. She insulted and degraded men around her consistently.

Due to her independence, she had no desire to be the maiden of a husband. She became very miserable because she wanted a husband, but she did not want to give in to her fathers suitors. She began to become more angry and eventually became unable to accept her social role. When she finally dose marry, her husband makes her take on the role of a wife, even though she does not want to. She does simply because she does not want to be looked upon as a shrew.

Desemona was an extraordinary character who was very independent and than very submissive. She begins to be smothered by her husband and trying to convince him was next to impossible. She knew she was going to be killed and she was alright with it because of the burden that her marriage had put on her. She did not want to become dependant even though she pleaded with her husband that she was. When she is finally killed, she forgives everybody. Agape's, China, and Hire, are offered honorable marriages if they reject their Christian beliefs and return to the old Roman Gods.

The three women were so strong that they told the Roman Emperor no. They were threatened with torture and kept in prison. Their guards in prison were allowed to subject them to any abuse they wanted to. Eventually they are threatened with execution.

They were to be burned alive. All three of them were killed eventually. These women did not play the traditional position of women in ancient society, but play a significantly similar role in the position of women in society today. All of these women began a new movement in self-respect and respect among all women.

All of these women had a common trait of independence and disobedience. Though women today are not extremely disobedient, they are extremely independent. The roles of women are continuously changing and they continue to distance themselves from the domination of man. From the stories of these women alone, it is easy to see that women were never completely in submission and were always trying to gain respect for themselves.

Though there has not been a female president of the United States, a female priest, or a female athlete in the NFL or NBA, there already are female body builders, females in space, and females in congress. Just as the people centuries ago would have never imagined women in the workplace, today we have no idea where women will go.
