LEADERSHIP AND POWER 1. How does leadership differ from management? Warren Bennis differentiated leaders and managers by saying that Leaders are people who do the right thing, and managers are people who do things right. He implied that leaders are implored to do the right or moral or ethical thing to do, while managers, though not necessarily immoral or unethical in their actions and decisions, are more concerned with doing things in the right manner. In business sense, the right manner would be the most cost-efficient, effective, and also, most profitable.

Hence, there is blurry boundary between managers and leaders. Management keep things moving, leadership involves are more visionary way of looking at things differently (Miller no date The Difference Between Leaders and Managers). Miller reinforces Bennis view that management entails a more focused way of doing things right. Thus, it maintains that management is the one that takes care of the daily grind of the operations of the organization. Leadership involves a more far-sighted view of thins as it means inspiring people to recognize this rainbow as a beautiful and noble vision, worth working for as a result and a process.

Using this rainbow symbol, management knows this and appreciates and recognizes the rainbow as a vision worth reaching, but afterwards management gets down immediately to planning, goal-setting and the whole gamut of business organizing and management to start things moving, in order to reach the far-off rainbow. Management prioritizes on how things are done, while leadership entails what should be achieved in the long run. Management is more formal and scientific -- - whereas leadership is more informal and artistic in the sense that it requires more creativity. Management relies on foundation skills (Dubrin 1997 10 Minute Guide to Leadership). Dubrin used a cognitive approach in distinguishing managers from leaders (1997). He concurred with Miller regarding the vision-driven aptitude of leaders, and agreed with Farr, that leaders are creative individuals.

Moreover, he illustrated that leaders deal more with the emotional side of management, where leaders help their followers in motivating themselves to achieve their goals, in accordance to the organizational goals. Managers employ more of the scientific and logical processes in fulfilling the immediate, middle-run and long-run aspects of organizational management. They are operation-based, or the people concerned with systems and structures (Dubrin 1997). Managing and leading are two different ways of organizing people. The manager uses a formal, rational method whilst the leader uses passion and stirs emotions (Blair 1997 The Difference Between Management And Leadership). Blair depicted the same view as Dubrin, although he highlighted that managers and leaders are two sides of the same coin.

Managers and leaders can exist separately from one another, but they must be the same people for the benefit of the people and the organization. This means that managers and leaders perform the same role, although they employ different methods. Blair noted how leaders in organizations can pose problems to managers, especially if the people follow the leaders. Sometimes, managers seem to be too top-bottom on their management style that people would not want to obey at all times.

It would be the leaders in the organization that the people would go behind instead. Problems will beset the organization when people become more loyal to their informal leaders, than their managers (Blair 1997). 2. What is power? Power is not a new phenomenon. It forms the foundations of government, sociology, psychology, history, religion and the many disciplines. For some people, control means control.

To be powerful may feel heady and exhilarating and exciting. Power pervades every aspect of ones life. One wields it and are subject to it. This is because people are all interconnected. We live and work together. When people come together, it is natural that people influence and are influenced by each other.

Power is the ability to influence one another. 3. How may the different bases of power be used during an interaction with a non-nursing department? The different bases of power can be used by a non-nursing department since legitimate power which refers to the power of bosses because of their relative positions or the presidents of corporations who exercise their authority in their business set-up. Their expert power would also be needed in the organizational set-up. They alone would have the Expert Power with their knowledge and skills in highly specific parts of the job.
