Comparative Essay To my mind, Frankenstein and Small World are the stories which were designed to turn our attention to the problems of family relationships, to the feelings of love and care that should be at the heart of every family. Unfortunately, people living in 19 th and 20 th centuries disregard the holy essentials of a family and very seldom they are aware of the severe punishment that inevitably comes afterwards. The story of Frankenstein was written in the 19 th century and I think that it can be taken as a warning of punishment for breaking holy family rules. Victor Frankenstein never thought about whether his creature would exist or would want to exist.

He did not care about its appearance and created a being of gigantic size. Victor did not consider the thing how his child would be taken by the society. Maybe the first time for him to realize his mistakes was after his monster came to live and Victor was disgusted by his abnormity. Victor rushed out of the room, he couldnt help his aversion to the child he created. He did not have any kind of warm feeling to Frankenstein either before his birth or after it.

Victor disliked Frankenstein for his and dreadful look but he did not think he was blame for it. To my mind, in spite of his bad appearance, Victors child was not a monster inside. It should be mentioned that after his birth Frankenstein did not have a conscience of his own, and like a blank sheet, he was ready to absorb the outer world and become anyone the society of humans would shape him. I think, Frankenstein became a monster because he was brought up so. The behavior of a monster maybe was just his response to the attitude of humans.

His farther Victor abandoned him and all his parental responsibility. He was created without a mother, so none could show him love, care, sympathy, pleasure, happiness, in short any kind of positive feeling or emotion. Instead, Frankenstein got used to terror, hostility, threat, offence. I believe, that by means of such character the author aimed at setting an example, how a neglected and abused child grows up to be an abuser. I am sure, that the absence of parental love causes misunderstanding and a gap of arrogance in family. This badly injures a pure childs soul and damages the concepts of good and evil in a childs mind.

Watching the relationships in his family a child learns to behave in the same way. In other words a child subconsciously adopts the models of behavior in his family and surely will apply them when he grows up. Frankenstein himself realized that he was born good but compelled by the others to do evil. Frankenstein made a conclusion, that a child that is deprived of a loving family, becomes a monster.

The story of Frankenstein has much common with the theory of Rousseau of the natural man. According to Rousseau a man is a noble savage that is born free but in chains. The great philosopher claimed that a man is corrupted by a society. I think that this theory relates more to the problem of a child upbringing. And in my point of view Rousseau's theory points out that society plays a decisive role in shaping childs behavior. Frankenstein was not taught to love by his family.

He obtained intellectual and moral education while he was observing another family - the Delacey's who lived not far from his hovel. The Delacey's were for his as an example of a loving and virtuous family. They stimulated him to do good deeds. More than that the De Lacey family introduced Frankenstein spoken and written language. This stimulated him intellectually.

Frankenstein started to read books which he took from a small library and then he acquired abstract notions and enlarged his knowledge of nice and virtue. Thus it may be seen that a good example of the De Lacey family produced a great impact on Frankenstein. Observing kindness and virtue the creature ceased his monstrous way of behavior. And thus at that time Frankenstein was not a monster any more.

But after Frankenstein was rejected by Victor, by the De Lacey family, by the human society, the creature abandoned all good and started a course of revenge against the Frankenstein family. Due to his education Frankenstein had consciousness and could realize everything around him. He saw that he was completely alone and nobody in the whole world needed him. He became aware of the fact that he had been rejected by all the humans because he was a monster. People were hostile to him and they would rather kill him then to take him as their equal. He was treated like a social outcast and the only thing that remained for him to behave in the way he was expected.

The lack of loving and nurturing parents, acceptance of the society, companionship, destroyed his hope to become like one of the humans, to lead a moral way of life, to have a family of his own. Frankenstein turned into a horrible beast and his only goal was to kill the men who made him suffer. This was his final inward change which led him to death. To my mind this story about Frankenstein is a warning for all the mankind. The writer foresaw that the next generations would neglect virtues and abandon love.

Then disastrous catastrophe may happen a whole generation of frankenstein's will appear. The topic of family relationships continues in the works of modern writers. In his Small World Peter Ho Davies suggests another interpretation of the reasons that cause gaps of arrogance in a family. Davies introduced the notion of sandwich generation couples. Modern family is transformed by new demands of progress and lifestyle of humans. Due to modernization, high technologies the outer world is changing fast and life of our generation seems to be a never-ending rush.

We got used to making things in haste: we eat, walk, quarrel, marry and raise our children in the circumstances of lack of time. Contemporary frankenstein's threaten to steel their parents time. That is why present-day parents do not nurture children themselves, they hire babysitters, leave children with their grandparents in order not waist time on them. Lack of time is killing warm atmosphere in a family and interferes with mutual understanding of relatives.

Now Time is the beast which destroys morals, mixes up vice and virtue and ruins hopes of mankind. The story of Joyce and Wilson in Small World is the story of love which turned from virtue into vice. Both of them were married. But still, they kept love in their hearts and when they met again they let the old passion go.

They felt that their deeds were odd, immoral but at the same time there was something innocent, naive in their desire to be happy, disregarding any social laws and rules. Wilsons wife was in her third trimester of pregnancy. She would give a birth to a child who from his early days of life would be nothing like a barrier to his parents love and hopes. The baby was a thing which would cause sorrow, shame and something full of horror. When Victor saw horrible appearance of Frankenstein he wished his death. He realized his mistakes but it was too late.

And I think that somewhere back in his mind, Victor blamed Frankenstein for his own failures and shame and terrors. Maybe Victor felt that the real monster was he himself.
