Baroque's Art Sites Art History Resources web This page is an art history page of a large site created by Dr. Christopher Witcomb: web The larger site covers the whole range of art history. I cannot begin to describe what is available on this site, which must have been a huge work of love. The site includes high resolution photos of sculptures, paintings and other visual arts as well as architecture, photography, textiles, icons and even comic book art. Virtually every visual art is represented here and educational materials besides. The links on this site alone could keep a serious student busy for months.
I looked at Vermeer. I had no idea he was so prolific. The amazing thing about his work is the history and ordinary life of the time he depicts. Art Cyclopedia web This site was smaller, but the list scrolled nicely with very clear thumbnails of the paintings and sculptures. Scrolling down the list made one thing absolutely clear: women are not represented. The site links to a site where you can buy prints, posters and reproductions.
I looked at the Dutch Baroque and was pleased to find many which are uplifting. I had thought that the Dutch art was largely dark. There are many artist I did not know about and I will return to look them over. Romantic Art Images of Romantic Art web This site is a sub-site of The Hanover College History site at web. There are only four works here, but they are beautifully displayed.
They are all battle scenes of sorts. The last one is particularly impressive. It is a scene of a Slaver where bodies are being thrown from the ship into the sea. They are of dead and dying slaves. From this site I discovered that I must get myself a very large flat display screen and be able to display large images like these at home in a screensaver or slideshow format. I shall look for sites which sell the digital images.
I know where to find one that offers free images: web The William Blake Archive web This site is a large educational project of University of Virginia which contains an amazing array of William Blakes work. His poetry more or less began the Romantic Period for literature and he influenced many other major poets and writers. However, his artwork is represented here and it is beautiful. The work has not been popularized like other Romantic Period works, but is well worth looking at.
Blakes poetry is only touched upon in education until the very advanced levels of university study, because he is not easily explained. Most of his poetic work cannot really be understood in isolation of his whole body of work and his life. The illustrations to Dantes Divine Comedy are of particular interest on this site. I did not know Blake had created such beautiful visual art. I have been re-examining his poetry recently, and I shall definitely have to look at his visual art. The Internet contains so much I wish I had much more time.
The Romantic Era web This site offers the poetry of the Romanic Era. There is an amazing array of poetry here in full text. The list of names is long. There are even some women represented. Many of these names are unfamiliar to me. There are many more poets than were in my Literature classes anthologies.
Classical Net web This site is a fairly comprehensive collection of music resources from all the classical periods. It includes links to sites where the surfer can purchase the music (likely how the site owner make money). The link page here is the most valuable part of the site: web The site includes sets of links sorted by artist, composer, organization and many more different categories. I have discovered new artists and groups here I shall be investigating in the future.
The opera sites are of special interest, as this is likely the largest collection of links around. Baroque Dance web This site is interesting in that it includes a lot of little tidbits of information about dance of the period. It is the main site of Paige Whitley, a dancer, director and researcher on Baroque Dance. : Their critically acclaimed collaborations have excited and educated audiences in the US, Canada, and Japan, garnering repeat invitations for the duo to work with some of the finest Baroque music groups in the world. This is a genre of art of which I was actually unaware, although I guess I always knew there was dance characteristic of the period. It just never occurred to me that this was an object of study, though that also stands to reason, since that is the only way any of us will ever be exposed to it. Various Art Sites from the Period The Sister Arts web This site brings together visual, literary and historical materials that document the interrelation of poetry, painting, and garden design in English culture from 1700 - 1832.
Known as the sister arts because they were considered to achieve similar effects on readers and viewers, these three genres were considered the most artistically important forms by many eighteenth-century artists and critics. The introduction to this site said everything you need to know as well as anything I could say. I never considered gardening as an art, except for commercial landscaping, but the English did and do take it to a level where it is, indeed, art. I never actually made the connection before. It was interesting to look at how they connect them. UNLV Library Architecture Resources web This site is part of University of Nevada's website, in particular the library.
It has links to history and genres, educational sites, links to major works and architects and a whole lot more. I have always enjoyed architecture and did not realize there was so much about it on the web. I shall enjoy exploring this. Theatre History Sites on the WWW web This site is a huge resource for theatre information, history and all sorts of great stuff. The links here are worth a lot to anyone trying to get information on theatre or the history of theatre. Many sites which come up on search engines offer to sell tickets.
Theatre is, of course, an art, but I never really looked at the history beyond the actual dramas. This site includes so much more. The Web Virtual Library of Theatre and Drama web This is one of the links on the previous site and it is loaded with all kinds of educational material, and really interesting information about theatre through time and around the world. The MIT section has materials I never dreamed of, part of their technology program.
Museum Quality web Though this site is commercial, it is worth a look just because their illustrations are fantastic. I did not know one could legally buy reproductions of master art works. I shall save my pennies for a Klimpt or a Van Gogh. Screensavers that Motivate and Inspire This is the parent site: web and this is the Baroque section.

It is somewhat limited in scope, but contains a lot of good information and history. One thing I learned on this site I did not know is that ballets are not the same each time you see them.
There is no standard choreography. (1820 - 1900 s) web This site has a lot of ads, but it contains a nice definition and a lot of good links to other sites and to journal articles and dissertations. I learned that one can make money without doing much on the web. The articles are interesting.
