Jake Tends to Hide from Himself Because of his Physical Self. The war used to be harmful for people who have gone through it for all the time especially while speaking on such global disaster as the World War I. Ernest Hemingway passed it himself that is why all feelings and thoughts narrated in The Sun Also Rises are extremely truthful and real. The World War I brought in use a term of Lost Generation, a term which was applied to the veterans of Vietnam War in the USA and veterans of Afghan War in the ex-USSR, a term that denotes ultimate meaningless of the war and its impact on the destinies of young people who have to go through it for some vague political aims. Former soldiers are coming as winners from the war and do not even suspect that all the war traces are notched at their souls and destinies.

A war is not an entertainment but a blood, sweat and tears. A war is a pain and disillusions, wounded bodies and souls. The protagonist of The Sun Also Rises by brilliant American novelist E. Hemingway Jake Barnes is a typical example of the war wounded hero, both physically and spiritually. In case with Jake the situation is worsened by the fact that he got impotence due to a wound and the physical wound coincides with his state of soul because both aspects have the same reason.

Hemingway, a brilliant novelist exposes Jakes destiny to express his own attitude towards the war. The dramatic history of love of Jake and Brett is narrated by Hemingway to underline all hopelessness of their love and therefore the desperate hopelessness of Jake. The veteran of war faces the terrible choice of a passionate love on one hand and a desperation caused by the war consequence on the other hand. Nobody in the world is able to change this consequence. Love is on one hand and the comprehension of its irrationality is on the other hand, the passionate desire opposed by a great desperation. Their love is mutual and this fact makes Jake feel more uncomfortable because he can not realize it.

You mustnt. You must know. I cant stand it, thats all. Oh darling, please understand! , Dont you love me? , Love you? I simply turn all to jelly when you touch me (The Sun Also Rises, Ch. 4). What to do with this if you can not change it?

The only one way is to hide from oneself. The generation of the ex-war soldiers is trying to hide from the reality and from their memoirs in drinking. The characters are drinking alcohol all the time. "Although the people of his new book have no morals, drink too much, are blown about by their passions they are alive, truly real and alive, with courage and honesty. " (Rita Botts) The love of Jake and Brett worsens the moral state of Jake. He wants to hide from the reality of the post war Europe in the country Couldnt we go off in the country for a while? (The Sun Also Rises, Ch. 7).

Brett refuses to go to the countryside. This desire of Jake is an attempt which may be considered an attempt to hide from reality and hide from himself with Brett. He is naive to think that Brett can share his moral and physical sufferings. Instead he receives the Brett's friendship a bitter candy which can not substitute true love.

Yet Jake is not quiet adequate in his actions. His love story with Brett underlines his inadequateness. He should have realized that he had no chances with Brett due to his physical state. Jake is a typical representative of the Lost Generation. The desire to settle in Europe, Paris is the desire to hide oneself in the never-ending fest of false carelessness of Boulevard Montparnasse. Moral decay and social alienation shared by the Lost Generation: "Youre an expatriate.

Youve lost touch with the soil... Fake European standards have ruined you. You drink yourself to death. You become obsessed with sex. You spend all your time talking, not working. Youre an expatriate, see?

You hang around cafes. " (Albert Kwan). The expatriates find all their pre war moral values destroyed. On the other hand they do not want to accept the values of the post war society, considering them false. The issue worsens by the Jakes impotence.

He as well as his fellows find the shelter in alcohol, but unlike his friends he can not hide into the wild sexual promiscuity as his friend do. This is the peculiar feature of the Lost Generation. They are wasting their lives in the Parisian cafes because they are confused, the pre war values are lost and the new ones are difficult to accept. At the same time all these grown up people remain spiritually clear having brought from the war the feeling of mutual assistance and the bitter disappointment by peace they were fighting for.

The post war American reality seemed false because of its pragmatism. Strictly saying the former soldiers and Jake being the representative of them happens to get into the vacuum of moral values. At the same time this vacuum is applied not to the entire post war society but to the war veterans. They have the real values in their souls but are confused by the society which is unwilling to accept them.

Young people having passed the cruel war are searching the ways to restore their moral values. Jake is permanently trying to find the place to hide in. He is searching for his lost moral ideals, but this is to hide his searches of the lost masculinity, his ego. The love of Jake to Brett resembles the drama and brings nothing but the moral sufferings. Jake suffers in silence and this brings more difficulties to him which he tries to bury in parties, drinking etc.

Ernest Hemingway narrates Robert Cohn to accent the generosity of Jake. Cohn discusses all his soul affairs with everybody. Jake is locked in himself. All his troubles are hidden and he does not involve anyone into his problems. Cohn unlike Jake is rich, verbose and is ready to complain to anyone. Hemingway intentionally puts both into the similar situation; they are both in love with Brett.

When Brett rejects Jake he takes it as it is, at least in public thus demonstrating his integrity. Cohn does not want to accept the reject by Brett thus loosing his masculine self esteem, though taking into consideration the physical state of Jake the situation should have been opposite. The tragedy of Jake is that he is the main hero of Hemingway and Hemingway made him physically incapable just to underline the strength of the heros character. Lost Generation introduced and narrated by Hemingway is the cruelest consequence of war.

Any war does not end with the last shot or signing the peace treaty. The war is going on in souls of survivors, their destinies and their minds no matter if they won or lost on the battlefields. Such situation is typical for any post war generation. These war survivors narrated by Hemingway live their own lives and they are unwanted anywhere in the world like any post war generation. They are untouchable by other members of the society. Jake is different from other companions first of all because of his physical impairment his moral disillusions.

Jake keeps to a company of Brett, Cohn, Bill, and Mike because he is afraid of himself. His attempt to hide from reality could be realized in the company of people who understands him, he is strong enough to manage himself at a daytime but the night brings him all negative feelings back. His life in burlesque Paris is the attempt to hide from himself. It is OK at the daytime, but night brings the pain. "It is awfully easy to be hard-boiled about everything in the daytime, but at night it is another thing. (The Sun Also Rises) The life of Jake is expressed by Herbert Hoover Older men declare war.

But it is youth that must fight and die. And it is youth who must inherit the tribulation, the sorrow, and the triumphs that are aftermath of war. (Rebekah Bunting). Hemingway expresses his attitude towards the Lost Generation a member of which he was. The novel of Hemingway is the verdict to war and this verdict is of great importance in our days as well. It is an appeal to the society and politicians revealing the consequences which the war normally brings. The most dangerous of them are the moral ones.

It is also an appeal to the society to be more attentive to people who got the physical and moral injures and sufferings for the sake of society. Bibliography Hemingway, Ernest, The Sun Also Rises.
