Peace and Conflict Resolution in Southeast Asia Indigenous people are being generally mistreated in many countries of the world. There are two the most important factors that played role in it these people are usually less developed than the dominant population in countries where they live and their number isnt sufficient enough to allow them standing up for their rights. They were able to maintain their uniqueness because they, as a rule, live in hardly accessible areas, whether its mountains or jungles. Being economically and culturally separated from the rest of the world, allowed them to continue on with lifestyle that is not much different from their ancestors, who pursued the same activities for hundreds and even thousands of years. In 19 th century Europeans referred to these people as children of nature. They never attained any other socio-political status, but tribal.

In developed countries, these tribes of indigenous people now being elevated to the status of nations. There is one native group in Canada, consisting of 150 people, which now call itself Babe Lake Nation The people in Southeast Asia are largely unaware of political correctness and thats why indigenous groups in that region are still being mistreated. The best examples are Pao people in Burma and Lahu in Vietnam and Cambodia. Pao is the largest indigenous group of people on Burma; most of them reside in mountainous parts of this country. During the military rule in Burma, these people were considered as being not loyal enough and thats why there were an internment camps built for them during sixties, where great many of Pao died. Nevertheless, Pao always cherished their identity they are known to wear their traditional dress at all times, even though Burmese authorities do not tolerate it.

Lahu populate northern part of Cambodia. During Communist regime of Pol Pot in 1975 - 1978, these people were simply hunted down and shot at point blank range. There wasnt any particular reason to exterminate them, as they werent even political. Yet, Pol Pot thought that they simply wouldnt fit in his bloody paradise on Earth.

During 3 years the number of Lahu people was reduced from 50 thousands to 8 - 9 thousands. It is not too hard to predict that it is only the matter of time before there is going to be none of them left, because even todays Cambodian government doesnt really care about these people either. European settlers, with all their greed for land and money, still tried to treat indigenous people with at least some degree of respect they used to signed treaties with them, whether it was in America, Asia or Africa. Although colonial authorities never really cared about aborigines, nevertheless they would never allow a full-scale massacre of ethnic minorities to take place on the territory that was under their control. But once the colonial period was over in Southeast Asia and local independent governments took over, they would often go as far as pursuing the policy of genocide towards its own indigenous people, as mentioned above examples show. Its very hard to come up with sensible suggestion of how to improve living conditions of indigenous communities.

They were only able to maintain their identity because they were living separately from the rest of civilization. But it is highly unlikely that theyll be able to continue on with such lifestyle for much longer. With high birth rate in Southeast Asia, there are more and more people are going to be moving into traditional areas and slowly driving aborigines out. The only way for these marginalized groups to maintain their identity is to turn their villages into tourist attractions.

This enable them to get a steady flow of cash, unless their local governments becomes interested and simply take it away from them, which is very likely scenario. We live in time of Globalization, when only nations with populations not less than 50 millions have fair chance of being competitive in very near future. In this respect, indigenous people do not have much choice but whether to be fused into larger national communities or to just simply getting extinct.
