I went downstairs to the kitchen to make coffee. Sipping caffeine I was enjoying every drop of the brown liquid, because it was my first cup of coffee for 45 days.

Being very nervous in the evening, I had slept reasonably well and despite those early hours my thoughts were clear. Instead of watching and reading, I was going to become a part of it.

From the very beginning, it was not going smoothly. I developed the plan on my computer in order to follow and monitor my performance. During long nine months all my free time was devoted to training, and my usual life became a moment between workouts. Two sessions done and another day was marked-off. My training partners and I were running through winter, passing ice covered roads and aluminum soccer fields in five-degree weather with frozen eyelashes and numb lips. In spring we were cycling in sleet, hail, freezing rain, in humidity and pollen.

What for? Probably for the challenge, for experience, for the excitement of crossing the finish line, for ourselves and for those people who were not able to make it. My clock was showing 5: 30 am when Mike, Jim and I headed down to put air in our tires and get body marked. Scratchy sound of an alcohol marker woke me from my calm and concentrated state. I put on my race outfit, Polar heart rate monitor, Orca neoprene wetsuit and headed for Mirror Lake. Somehow I did finish my swim and got out of the water. While approaching to T 1 area and passing through the timer-gate I heard the beep. As I began my bike session, I noticed my heart rate was pretty high, and no wonder why, considering my finish in the water. Therefore, for the first hour I was trying to settle my crazy heart rate down. I started drinking water to get it ready for food intake. I was not the fastest biker in this competition, therefore I decided to have not very intense, moderately relaxed ride as far as it was possible while covering 120 miles.

The whole ride was like one of those movie scenes where the road stretches out forever and is completely deserted. Only me and an endless road. Therefore, I started competing first with the road, then with myself. After five hours, I found myself asking questions like Stop. What for? and What are you trying to prove and answering immediately You have trained for this for 9 months, Keep your balance, Shut it and go on.

I was dancing on the bike, pedaled and pedaled. After all, I threw away my spare tires in order to be lighter and go faster. Coming back to town, I heard yelling of my family from a few blocks away, and realized that I was going to make it. Finally I turned to transition area and volunteer took a bike from me, when abruptly I felt a pain in my right foot. After all, Ironman is the race of difficulties, which one experiences one after another and during all the competition. Therefore, I had to forget about my foot and go on to tear the muscle.

However, those first miles were painful and caused a ton of self doubt. I was constantly reminding myself that Ironman is a competition of those who slows down the least, therefore I was trying my keep my low pace and save my quads as long as possible. Coming back from the turn to town was very hard, because of the Degree of Difficulty hill, which literally became a real wall for me, but thankfully cheering crowds were really strong and motivated me all the way up. Every uphill was a painful jump over my head, and every downhill was a talk to myself to continue on. As soon as I started to forget about the infamous wall, Degree of Difficulty hill appeared again. I resolved that I was going to run up that hill no matter what, and on the top of my wall my friend Mike, who was at the end of the out and back and in terrible conditions as well reminded me to stay positive and that I have only 3 miles to go.

Indeed, passing the 24 mile marker and, with just 2 miles to go, I knew I was going to finish the race. The participants had thinned out during the marathon so there was nobody ahead of me and only some hundreds behind as I ran through supportive streets of the town and yelling spectators. Finally, when I ran into the arena to complete the final 200 meters, it was floodlight and I was greeted by thousands of people, cheering, waving and screaming to me as if I was the winner. At the top of my voice and volume of my tired lungs I was yelling Ironman! Im an Ironman!

Amazingly, experiencing pain and fatigue, I was still able to soak in the whole situation, the support, the scenery, and what I had accomplished. At the finish line it all hit me and broke in thousand parts when I saw my family in the stands. I dreamt too many times about this moment over the last year, and in the arms of my family I started crying. I took myself right to the edge where could be no living, and indeed it was everything about living. And the edge was right. I exceeded every goal I set out for myself.

I understood with hear and soul, and with my every muscle and cell as well, how small the family of athletes is.
