Today's world is full of worries and problems which did not affect teens a generation ago. New problems keep appearing in today's world, such as STDs, increased pregnancy rates, and other factors facing teens who choose to have sex. Emotionally and physically teens and getting less developed before having sex and are not prepared for the serious problems which come along with their decision to have sex. One such serious problem surrounding teen sexual intercourse is the probability of AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). Each year, three million teens are infected with STDs.

Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome, better known as AIDS, is caused by the incurable HIV virus. AIDS is a deadly disease that deteriorates the immune system. There are two groups of HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), HIV- 1 that occurs throughout the world and HIV- 2 that mainly occurs in Africa. The HIV virus enters the white blood cells and takes over the reproductive system of that cell and uses the system to reproduce itself.

The white blood cell dies and the new HIV cells infect other white blood cells and repeat the process. If you have become infected with the AIDS disease you may not have any symptoms of the for the next ten years. The AIDS disease makes the less serious conditions harder for your body to control or get rid of because of the loss of many of the white blood cells in your body. The most common causes of death for the people with AIDS are pneumonia and Kaposi's sarcoma, which afflict 70 % of the infected people.

AIDS is transmitted in three ways. Intimate sexual contact is the most common. While direct contact with infected blood and transactions to babies from the infected mother's fetus will also cause the disease. Although some speculation, you cannot receive the disease from air, food, water, or insects.

AIDS is a life and death issue. To have the AIDS disease is a sentence of slow but inevitable death. There currently is no cure or vaccine for this disease. There are drugs that have been proven effective in slowing the spread of this deadly disease.

We know enough about how the infection is transmitted to protect ourselves from it. But too few people are hearing the AIDS message. Perhaps many simply don't like or want to believe what they hear, preferring to think that AIDS "can't happen to them. " Like other communicable diseases, AIDS can strike anyone. AIDS doesn't just occur in certain social groups. We must all protect ourselves from this infection and learn about it in time to take effective precautions. Given the right measures, no one needs to get AIDS.

Now is the time to take charge against the AIDS disease. People must remember, that the most reliable person in charge of preventing you from getting AIDS, is yourself! Besides aids there are a lot more STD's people should be aware of. Chlamydia, gonorrhea, genital warts, and syphilis are just some to name a few. Sexually transmitted diseases or STDs.

are a group of diseases that are transmitted through sexual contact. Chlamydia is the leading sexually transmitted disease in the U. S. with an estimated 4 million cases occurring annually. More than 10 % of sexually active adolescents become infected each year and about 50 % of all women between the ages of 18 and 30 have chlamydia. The bacterial disease is asymptotic in 75 % of women and 50 % of men.

Chlamudia can be transmitted through oral and anal sex as well as vaginal. A person who is infected with chlamydia will start seeing symptoms within 1 to 3 weeks. Men have different symptoms for women. Men will have a burning pain when urinating and watery, white discharge form the penis. Women will have discharge form the vagina, bleeding between periods or after sex, urinating more often, and lower abdominal and back pains.

Chlymaydia can be cured with antibiotics completely. If not treated, it can spread into the pelvic organs causing PID or Pelvis Inflammatory Disease. Genital warts appear soft, flesh toned, bumpy growth that often looks like miniature pieces of cauliflower. The warts can be small, or they can cluster in large masses. They can be found on the vulva in the vagina, on the cervix penis, anus, and urethra. Some genital warts viruses can cause cancer of the cervix, vulva, vagina or penis.

Symptoms of genital warts and individual may notice warts from one month to several years after they have been infected. The warts are usually not painful, but may cause some itching. Some infections may be invisible to the naked eye, but can be detected with a Pap smear or colposcopy. Genital warts are usually spread through oral, vaginal and anal intercourse.

Warts can be treated, but never cured. A doctor or nurse practitioner treats them with a solution that is applied to the wart itself. This solution will freeze or burn the wart off. The person my have to keep coming back for more treatments with in a couple of weeks.

Syphilis is a STD, which is caused by the spirochete Treponema palladium. Syphilis can be broken down into three phases: primary, secondary, and tertiary. In the primary phase the individual develops a chancre which is a small ulcer on the genitals. This lesion is often undecided, the lesion heal in 3 to 6 weeks. Secondary syphilis appears 4 to 10 weeks after the appearance of the primary lesion. A rash and flu like symptoms characterize this stage.

Fevers, headaches, loss of appetite, joint pain, and fatigue is all common symptoms. These symptoms will disappear in 2 to 6 weeks. The latent stage is symptom free and can only be detected by a blood test. The last stage of syphilis which is characterized by body-wide organ damage. The individual may experience cardiac complications, neurological damages, dementia, dermatological problems, and orthopedic abnormalities. Syphilis is a systemic disease that effects many organ systems causing severe damage in the absence of treatment.

As of now if doctors are able to catch the systems at an early stage, syphilis can be cured. Nearly 750, 000 cases of gonorrhea are reported annually in the United States. Another 750, 000 unreported cases, mostly among teenagers and young adults, are believed to occur each year. Gonorrhea is caused by the gonococcus, which is a bacterium that grows and multiplies quickly in moist, warm areas of the body such as the cervix, urethra, mouth and rectum.

In women, the cervix is the most common site of infection. Gonorrhea is most commonly spread during genital contact, but it can also be passed from the genital of one partner to the throat of the other during oral sex. Gonorrhea van also be passed form an infected mother to her newborn baby during delivery. Most women who are infected have no symptoms of the disease.

If symptoms of gonorrhea develop they usually appear within 2 to 10 days after sexual contact with the infected person. The initial symptoms in women include a painful or burning sensations when urinating or an abnormal vaginal discharge. Men usually have a discharge from the penis and a burning sensation during urination that may be severe and painful bowel movements. The only way you can diagnose if someone has gonorrhea or not is by two tests, these tests are a gram stain or a culture test.

The gram stain test is very accurate for men but less so for women. The test involves placing a smear of the discharge on a slide that has been stained with a dye and then examines it under a microscope for the presence of the gonococcus. The culture test is the best way to test women with gonorrhea. This involves placing a sample of discharge on to a culture plate and incubating it for 2 days to allow the bacteria to multiply.

Ampicillin, amoxicillin, or some type of penicillin can treat gonorrhea. All of these STD's including the most dangerous on of all aids, are serious diseases. Even though there " re serious they all can be prevented by abstinence or by using condoms. Condoms will provide a barrier between you and any infectious organisms. Spermicidal condoms are the best condoms to use if you have to have sex. Spermicide will kill any organism that it comes in contact with.

In conclusion, I want to say that it is important to learn more about STDs and AIDS then make choices about how to minimize the risk of acquiring these diseases and spreading them to others. Knowledge of STDs, as well as honesty and openness with sex partners and with one's doctor, can be very important in reducing the incidence and complications of sexually transmitted diseases.
