... and finest poet the world has ever known. He lived in England and during all his life wrote great comedies and tragedies, plays and poems. Hamlet is one of his the most famous plays. The King of Denmark was killed and his brother Claudius assumed the throne and married the widowed Queen, Gertrude. The play opens when Hamlet, the Prince of Denmark and the son of the dead King, talks to the apparition who claims to be the spirit of his dead father.

The Ghost tells Hamlet that Claudius murdered him and asks Hamlet to avenge his murder. Also Hamlet is in love with Ophelia and Ophelia is in love with Hamlet, but they never will marry each other since her rank is beneath his. Hamlet is observing The King and The Queen, and Claudius begins to suspect that Hamlet knows about the murder. When at last he moves to punish Claudius, he accidentally kills the father of Ophelia, who on hearing the news of her father's death, loses her mind and drowns in the river. Claudius wants to kill Hamlet but Hamlet escapes Claudius' plans. Laertes, Ophelias brother, is now seeking revenge against Hamlet on behalf of his father and sister, and challenges Hamlet to a duel.

Secretly, he has conspired with Claudius to make sure Hamlet dies in the battle. The sword he uses is poisoned, as well as Hamlet's drink. During the duel, the Queen accidentally drinks the poisoned cup and dies. Hamlet and Laertes are both seriously wounded. Before dying, Laertes confesses all to Hamlet, telling him the details of Claudius' plot against him, including the fact that he will die shortly from the poison. Hamlet kills Claudius, and then implores his friend Horatio to tell the world the truth about the tragedy.

Horatio lives to clear Hamlet's name. Candide by Voltaire Candide is one of the most famous novels written by Voltaire, one of the greatest French authors of the 18 th century. Candide means innocent. Candide is a very innocent young man who lives in the castle of the Baron Thunder-ten-trench in Westphalia.

He lacks knowledge of the outside world. He believes that this castle is the best place to live in. He considers it ideal. One day he and Cunegonde, the Barons daughter are seen in romantic positions. So he is kicked and thrown out of the castle.

Candide goes through many adventures. Some of them are funny, some are sad, and some are eerie. His eyes open to reality. He sees that everything does not happen for the best as he was told. In America, he encounters misery.

He meets a number of people from various walks of life. He comes across many philosophers ranging from extreme optimism of Pangloss to the bleak pessimism of Martin. He experiences the love and total selflessness of Jacques and also the extreme cruelty and selfishness of the drunken sailor. He experiences the kindness of the old lady who happens to be the daughter of the Pope and a princess. She is always ready to help though she has gone through tremendous suffering herself. When Candide reaches Eldorado he feels peace.

It is a truly peaceful and happy place full of contented people. It is an earthly paradise. Yet he leaves it quickly to go in search of his beloved Cunegonde. He adores her and yearns for her all the time. He is ready to sacrifice anything in order to get her.

He feels life is still worth living and searching for Cunegonde. Finally Candide finds here. She has become quite ugly. She insists that he should marry her. After a period of uncertainty and boredom, Candide, Cunegonde, Martin, Pangloss, Paguette, the old lady, they all live on the farm purchased by Candide. They are quite satisfied.

From their numerous experiences, they have realized that they must cultivate their own garden. They know by the end of the novel that the only way to happiness is honesty and hard work and not vague philosophy and baseless illusions. Songs of Innocence/Songs of Experience by William Blake English poet, artist and mystic William Blake (1757 1827) is considered to be one of the greatest and most revolutionary English poets. The Songs of Innocence and Experience were first published in 1794 as a series of illustrated lyrics. The Songs compare the innocent, pastoral world of childhood against an adult world of corruption and repression. For example, such poem as The Lamb represent a meek virtue, the poem The Tyger is opposite, showing the darker forces.

Thus the collection of poems as a whole explores the value and limitations of two different perspectives on the world. Many of the poems fall into pairs, so that the same situation or problem is seen through the lens of innocence first and then experience. Songs of Innocence and Songs of Experience show how innocence and experience come together to create meaning. The Songs of Innocence dramatize the naive hopes and fears that inform the lives of children and trace their transformation as the child grows into adulthood. Some of the poems are written from the perspective of children, while others are about children as seen from an adult perspective. Many of the poems draw attention to the positive aspects of natural human understanding prior to the corrupt Blake's own summary description of the Songs of Innocence and Experience, that they show "Two Contrary States of the Human Soul" offers perhaps the best way of approaching this thematically organized set of illustrated lyrics. "Innocence" and "Experience" are, for Blake, two complementary but also conflicting states of the human soul, and states within all of Creation: neither is "better" than the other, and both are necessary to the other.

A Simple Heart by Gustave Flaubert "A Simple Heart" ("Un Coeur Simple"), by French writer Gustave Flaubert, is one of the stories in his Three Tales (Trois Conte's), published in 1877. It received admiring reviews at the time and has continued to be second only to his novel Madame Bovary (1857) in recognition and acclaim. Originally entitled The Parrot ("Le Perroquet"), "A Simple Heart" is the story of one woman's apparently fruitless existence. The protagonist, a hardworking, good-hearted, poor and uneducated woman named Felicity, is said to have been modeled after a maid employed by Flaubert's family during his childhood, a much beloved woman of tremendous character. The story is unusual among the author's writings because it is about goodness. In this story of a simple housemaid's life and death, the reader is invited to view a world of boundless, if not reciprocated, love and spirit.

Felicity, a woman of simple mind and devoted heart, suffers tremendous loss but continues to her last breath to love unconditionally. Some critics have suggested that Felicity's apparently meaningless life and misplaced worship of the parrot, Loulou - whom she adores and whom she imagines, in her dying moment, to be an incarnation of the Holy Ghost - reflect Flaubert's melancholy and disillusionment with life and with organized religion, particularly the Roman Catholic Church. Most critics agree that this is a poignant account of a sweet, simple, and unrewarded life, one which may have been happy precisely because it was unexamined. It does not matter that Felicity may have misinterpreted or simply not interpreted many of the events in her life: she dies smiling, and thus lives up to her name to the last.

Metamorphosis by Kafka Franz Kafka is a Czechoslovakian writer of 19 th century. His Metamorphosis takes place in three parts. In part one, Gregor is the sole breadwinner for the Same family, which includes his mother, father, and sister. One morning he wakes up from uneasy dreams and finds he has turned into a bug. His boss and his parents are outside his bedroom door trying to get him to answer. They cannot figure out why he is not at work.

Gregor finally opens the bedroom door and reveals himself to all of them. His boss runs away and his family is terrified. His father pushes him back into his room and locks him in. In part two the family returns to some degree of calm. Gregor stays hidden in his room and his sister dutifully and kindly leaves him food and cleans his messes. His parents ignore him, acting as if he were not there.

Gregor listens to them in the evening and notices how their lives have changed. Preoccupied with money and financial woes, they do not talk or eat much. His mother finally ventures into his room, but accidentally catches sight of him and faints. Gregor tries to help, but only makes a mess of things. His father comes in, blames Gregor for the chaos, and throws apples at him, wounding him severely and driving him back into his room a second time. In part three, the family slowly grows to resent Gregor.

Even his sister Grete stops caring for him very well. The wounds from the apples slow him down until he is weak and frail. On one occasion, just when Gregor is thinking about how much he loves his sister, he hears her say she wishes he were gone. He retreats into his room a third time and dies. In a kind of epilogue to the story that occurs after Gregor's death, his family is happy.

They retreat to the country and plan to buy a new home. Totally forgetting Gregor, they are full of dreams for a happy future.
