Astronomical Spectroscopy In the article Astronomical spectroscopy, the author tells us about what the spectrum is and how it is shown in the nature and astronomy. A spectrum is the result of decomposition of light on colors of which it consists. During studying a spectrum astrophysicists have made the major openings. A vivid example of a spectrum in the nature is the rainbow. For studying a light source, scientists use a triangular glass prism or diffraction grating to spread out light in a spectrum. In 1666 Newton has found out that colors formed by light which passes through a prism are parts of it.

Many experiments spent in the first decades of this century have led to understanding of one phenomenon. It shows that atoms and molecules can absorb or radiate light. The similar phenomenon is observed in an astronomical spectrum. On the basis of the characteristic of lines of an element we can judge presence of this element in the star or galaxy. The spectrograph also takes part in studying of the movement of an astronomical body. By means of Doppler principle we can measure radial speed of astronomical object.

The Doppler principle is based on dependence of colors and wavelengths of its spectrum line change from speed. There are some kinds of the sky, depending on wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum. They are: the infrared sky, the gamma-ray sky, the x-ray sky and the ultraviolet sky. Astronomical objects also look differently depending on wavelengths of the electromagnetic spectrum. We perceive spiral galaxies as spirals, because spiral arms consists of a lot of hot blue and blue-white stars which make these areas more brighter in a visible spectrum, than those areas of galaxy in which old stars are concentrated which spectrum is in longer wavelengths.
