People should never be judged by their appearance, be that clothes or beauty, the only thing that matters is a persons inner beauty, his or her character, habits, etc. It is common knowledge that even the ugliest beast can be a very feeling person and even the most beautiful person can be a total beast inside. Margaret Atwood's nurses naturae is one more vivid example to prove this statement. Her short story tells readers the about a girl who had a terrible disease which changed her appearance completely. Since the disease was very serious and the doctor who examined the girl didnt know the cure, the girl was doomed to spend the rest of her life with yellow eyes, pink teeth, red fingernails, hairy hands and breast. However, the changes in the girls appearance had almost no effect on her inside.

She was still a loving daughter, an understanding granddaughter and a helpful sister. She always tried to understand her dear and near ones and she always convinced herself that they were doing everything with best intentions at heart. The author wanted to emphasize the phrase at heart as far as the reader comes across it several times. The thing is that the disabled girl always believed that people who didnt seem to be trying to do good to her at first did want the best for her and for others at heart. This phrase is being emphasized to show the humanism of the beast.

Indeed, the girl was always trying to help as much as she could. She didnt want to stand in her sisters way when she wanted to get married. The girl even agreed to act as if she was dead and buried for her sister to get married; she didnt want her new family to take her with them into their new house after her fathers and grandmothers death. She didnt want to trouble anyone. She realized that her appearance made people think she is not the girl they had known any more, she realized that this fact changed their attitude towards her, she understood that they shouldnt be judged for this because it was not their fault and she was always convinced that they were trying to do what is best for her, at heart.

This proves one more fact besides her humanism she was a thinking and feeling being. Irrespectively of her appearance and disease, constant voices talking loudly in her head, she was more sympathetic and loving than anyone else of those who were very sound and healthy. Her family, to say nothing of the neighbors, always tried to keep a safe distance and never came close to her. After her hair started coming out in handfuls, her mother stopped brushing it, she didnt even hug her and cry as she used to do before, it was the same about the girls father she could no longer nestle into the crook of his arm. These facts show readers the humanism and ability to feel of the so called beast and the evil and lack of sympathy, understanding and patience in ordinary people. This aspect is being emphasized by the fact that the story is being told by the girl herself she describes her own feelings, thoughts and intentions.

Readers can figure out that the girl is surely able to love and symphonize, be helpful and perfectly understanding. The fact of her friendship with the cat is one more vivid example of her ability to feel: He was the only living creature who wanted to be close to me. I smelled of blood, old dried-up blood: perhaps that was why he shadowed me, why he would climb up onto me and start licking. The reader understands that, perhaps, the cat is not the girls friend and he doesnt really want to keep her company for any other reason but the smell of blood. However, the girl wants to believe and she believes that her cat is the only creature to understand her, to accompany her in her night wanderings. Actually, the story reminds of the fairytale The Beauty and the Beast.

However, in this case the fairytale is upside down. It turns out that nurses naturae is a beauty inside, though has the appearance of a beast. At the same time the society's appearance tries to convince their surrounding that they are beautiful, thought all of them are beasty creatures inside. The story of the girl has a bad ending unlike fairytales, which almost always have a happy end. One more thing that differs real life from this fairytale is that it is not reasonable to refer to all people as beasts. The thing is that the reader is supposed to understand the complicity of the problem, put themselves into the family's shoes, for example, and understand that their situation is not a bed of roses too all members of the family were at a loss, they didnt know how to cope with this problem and finally they had to suffer a lot and make their choice - better one happy than both miserable.

One more particular thing that should be mentioned about this girl is that she was a dreamer she dreamt of many things. At daytime she dreamt of night and waited with impatience to run about the house; when she saw two young people in the yard and decided that they had the same disease as she did, she dreamt of joining them. Finally, when she was about to fall from the burning rooftop like a comet, blaze like a bonfire, she dreamt of becoming an upside-down saint my finger bones will be sold as dark relics. She dreamt of being a legend, by then. The end of the story is especially striking the girl dreams of what she was told when she was lying dead in her room. She thinks: Perhaps in Heaven I'll look like an angel.

Or perhaps the angels will look like me. What a surprise that will be, for everyone else! It's something to look forward to. The first story, by Margaret Atwood, is a bit different from the second one, by Richard Seller. The reason is that these two stories show different sides of the problem different victims so to say.

In the first story, as it has already been said the life (or existence) of a disabled person is described. In this story we consider her relatives to be not right about treating the girl like that. In the second story, which is entitled The Fur Baby, the author enlightens the other side of the coin the feelings of the relatives, especially of a mother. The character of the mother of a beast is fully described by a wide range of feelings Luna had when she gave birth and brought up her fur baby.

She gave birth to a child, whose entire body was covered with fur. She never regretted keeping her son. She loved him and gave him a beautiful name Poem. She thought she would give him descent education; she would grow him like a normal boy. Perhaps, the mother of the girl in the first story had almost the same intensions roughly all mothers do want their children to grow up well educated and polite But her dreams never came true - she had seen the other children laughing and scared and she knew that wasn't safe, for people to be laughing and scared, and one day she came home to find him lying in the alley in back of the yard with a dent in his forehead and blood matting his lovely fur, and he was dead. She had never received gratitude for her efforts, as well as the family of the girl from the first story.

We have no right to say that they did nothing they tried to save their child but they lost their faith. In The Fur Baby Luna gave birth to another baby. It was a boy named Joe and he was not grateful at all, unlike the girl in the first story. The girl understood that her parents loved her but could not stand her present appearance.

Joe, unlike this girl, had no idea about how his mother suffered before. All he wanted was her soon death. He waited for it because he wanted to get the house he was going to inherit as soon as possible. In contrast, in the first story the child (the girl) didnt want to move out to the new house with her new family (her mother, sister and her husband) she decided to stay in her old dark room not to disturb or give troubles to anyone, perhaps for a rest, perhaps for death, perhaps just for the sake of existing, perhaps just to have a possibility to read Pushkin and Byron. However, Margaret Atwood aimed at portraying the fact that the girl was still grateful to her parents and was able to feel unlike the man (Joe), depicted in Richard Selzer's The Fur Baby, who was a cruel person and had no respect for his mother. The fact is that these two stories and characters are being opposed to each other like the beauty and the beast.

They are opposite as a disabled girl who can feel and a healthy man who is not able to sympathize or love. All in all, both writers wanted to describe the same situation but from different sides. They portrayed a situation with a disabled person in a family, but Margaret Atwood described the position of the disabled person herself, while Richard Seller described the problems of the parents of the disabled, which are not less complicated. The main thing about these two stories is that they show that it is impossible to know for sure what a person has inside ones feeling and thought are hidden in the darkest corners of his or her soul and a persons appearance is not an indicator of what he or she feels.
