Martin Luther Luther was born on November 10, 1483 in Eisleben in the province of Saxony. His protestant view of Christianity started what was called the Protestant Reformation in Germany. Luthers intentions were to reform the medieval Roman Catholic Church. The firm resistance from the church towards Luthers challenge made way to a permanent division in the structure of Western Christianity. Luther believed that Gods power was completely beyond mans comprehension and could only be accepted on faith alone. He did not believe that humans could understand how God with all his greatness become man through Jesus and be susceptible to weakness, sin and death.

His thoughts were that man could accomplish nothing without Gods grace. Man could not gain his own salvation and, therefore, God had to send his own son to earth. While on earth his son would live as a human and eventually die on the cross for our sins. Luther felt that all participation in church activities like, following religious rules, ceremonies and doing good works were idolatrous. These practices would not help people gain eternal salvation, but only faith alone in God could do that.

He felt that all these religious practices were external from God and were, therefore, idolatrous in nature. Luther believed that the Bible, the word of God, was of primary importance in a Christians life. He felt that over time man had through speculative reasoning distorted the accuracy and true meaning of the Word. According to Luther, the Roman Catholic Church preferred the Papal authority of the Church above Gods Word.

Luther defines faith as the absence of all good works. Pope and other officials of the Catholic Church had no knowledge or comprehension of the Bible or had ever even read it, according to Martin Luther. They were wicked people who were preoccupied with wealth and power, but who never considered accomplishing Gods will. Martin Luther has played a major role in the religious views of many generations. His teachings caused a revolt among the German peasants. They also caused separation within the Catholic Church.

Protestantism encouraged people individually to decide what they needed to do to be saved. This caused people to stray away from traditional beliefs. Luther claimed that Holy God interacts with human beings in two ways: by the means of the law and through the Gospel. The law represents Gods demands. Good examples of law are the Ten Commandments and the golden rule of the Bible. Luther believed that there are two basic functions of the law.

First one is that it enables human beings to maintain some order in their world, their communities, and their own lives. This is very important, because, as Luther thought, people are extremely alienated from God as a result of the original sin. The second function of law is that it gives the human beings awareness of their needs of forgiveness of sins, which, as a consequence, becomes their road to Christ. Despite the fact that human understanding is always distorted by human sin, people do have certain access to the law.

Regardless of their religious beliefs, people, through their consciences and through the ethical traditions of their culture, understand the great law of God. God sends His divine message to mortals through the Gospel, which is the message of the good news of Gods gift of his Son for the salvation of the human race. People do not have to do anything with the Gospel other than accept it and praise it. According to Luther, the main problem of the Catholic church was that it started to confuse law and Gospel. Law represents Gods demand, whereas Gospel represents Gods gift. Martin Luther believed that there were no Christian, who would not be a sinners and a saint at the same time.

People are saints as long as they believe in God, and acknowledge His grace above their own achievements. There is also sin, however, which is a permanent characteristic of each person in the world. The church, according to Luther, became too corrupted, because people, who served there, let too much sin in their lives. Thus, for Luther, the most respected citizen and the habitual criminal are both in need of forgiveness by God.

Luther held that God makes himself known to human beings through earthly, finite forms rather than in his pure divinity. That is why God revealed himself in Jesus Christ, who speaks His words to people in the human words of the New Testament writers that all the people are able to understand. Jesus body and blood are received by believers (in Luthers formulation, called consubstantiation) in, with, and under the bread and wine in Holy Communion. People are the instruments of God.

People have their own occupations, and that is how God works in the world through the different people, their lives and occupations. Luther asserted that Christian theology is the theology of the cross rather than a theology of glory. Human beings cannot apprehend God by means of philosophy or ethics. The only possible way to know God is to let God be God and see Him only where he chooses to make himself known. Thus, Luther stressed that God reveals his wisdom through the foolishness of preaching, his power through suffering, and the secret of meaningful life through Christs death on the cross.
