Diversity of Religion on Campus We are in a time when religions increasingly lose their actuality, since being intolerant in their nature, they are forced to coexist with each other, often sharing the same territory. It is not a secret that religions grasp of peoples minds is getting weaker and weaker, in the wake of recent scientific discoveries. Nevertheless, there are many people around the world that find it difficult to exist without the illusory hope of salvation. Sadly enough, many of them are students. The purpose of this paper is to show that religious tolerance on campus is necessary, since it help students to maintain their healthy skepticism, when it comes to dealing with messengers from God, who offer them only the authentic Gods truth, while claiming other religions as false and deserving eternal damnation. In my opinion, the best definition of religious diversity on campus comes from Professor Diana Eck at Harvard University, who said that religious pluralism is not the sheer fact of plurality alone, but is active engagement with plurality.

That means that it is not enough for students to be able to freely explore their spirituality, but also that they need to learn how to respect the religious views of other students. This, of course is much easier said than done, since every religion claims itself as the only true one. One simply cannot be a devoted Christian, Muslim or a Buddhist, without considering other religions as false. But as practice shows, every attempt to reduce religious practices on campus, only prompts more students to engage in them. It is especially visible among junior students. Yet, as they progress towards the end of their studies, they become more indifferent towards religion, because they gain actual knowledge.

The history of real religious diversity on campus in America dates back to the sixties, when a new immigration law allowed more non-white people to come to America. They also brought their religious views with them. Since the policy of multiculturalism gained official status, the religious views of the new immigrants became as much eligible to be promoted as the basis of public morality as Christianity, which used to enjoy a total dominance up until then. In the sixties, after entering the university, many Arab students had found that it is not only that they were not able to practice their own beliefs while there, but that the majority of Christian professors and students used to go as far as trying to impose their views on them forcibly. Also, many students with diverse cultural backgrounds were being pressured into becoming members of different Christian organizations by the fact that the membership in them used to be considered prestigious. Unlike any other religion, Christianity has always implied the superiority of Whites, even though it was being done in indirect way.

Imagine what a Black member of a students Christian club used to feel, while asked to sing Jesus in heaven, glorious, pure and white as a snow It is very ironic that many universities consider that they have established a religious diversity on their campuses by providing students with an opportunity to enroll into different Christian organizations, as if other religions simply dont not exists. For example, the site of the University of Mary Washington religious diversity page lists following organizations: Baptist Student Union, Campus Christian Community, Catholic Student Association and Intervarsity Christian Fellowship. This is despite the fact that, according to the latest sociological surveys, only 20 % of students are affiliated with Christianity and about 30 % with other religions. While arguing in favor of religious diversity on campus, it is important to understand that the ideas of religion and education are diametrically opposite. Many apologists of Christianity make a common mistake, by confusing this religion with Western culture in general. Judson Cox in her article Erasing Christianity says: Literature, the arts, science, math and technology were preserved and promoted through the Church when the Dark Ages threatened to extinguish the spark of knowledge (Cox).

But it was always the Church that tried to slow down cultural and scientific progress! Were now in possession of only the fraction of ancient Roman and Greek literature, because Christians used to pile up ancient manuscripts and set them on fire, for alleged heresy. People like Cox imply that Christianity equates with culture. But since Christianity is predominantly the religion of White people, it suggests the other system of beliefs are uncultured, which is nothing but a racist statement. The maintaining of cultural diversity on campus is now an official US policy in the field of education. Yet, much less attention is paid towards maintaining religious diversity.

After the events of 9 / 11, Americans grew very suspicious about Islam. It is not a secret that immediately after the attacks on the WTC towers, the American citizens of Arab descent in many states were being required to report to police on a weekly basis. It is a very good example of how religious intolerance can transform itself into a racial profiling. But if we ban Islam nationwide, we might as well ban Christianity too, since it is just as bloodthirsty. I personally, dont see any difference between Jehovahs encouragements to dash goyim childrens heads against the rock and Allahs idea of getting rid of unbelievers This is exactly the reason why no religious nonsense can be taught in American public universities and colleges, regardless of whether it is based on Judeo-Christian, Muslim or other values. Therefore, its wrong to promote Christianity as something that is meant to counter balance Islam both religions have originated in the Middle East, both promote sick morality, both deny life for the sake of illusory kingdom of heaven.

It goes without saying that students, like all citizens, have the right to believe in what they like. But, in my opinion, their religious practices should not be encouraged by university officials, for as long as they divert students from their primary duty - studying. After all, university is not a house of prayer but a place of learning. There are enough churches of just about any denomination in every American town, that can be attended by students in their free time. Still, I think that university officials need to provide the equal religious opportunity for all the students, not because this would help them to improve their grades, but because it would demonstrate that in their universities there is no danger of racist sentiment appearing on the ground of religious badness.

Carman Leone, in his article Muslim Students Need Space placed the fragments of his interview with Read Khan, a fifth-year NYU student who says that: What I don't understand is that the university recognizes Christian holidays like Christmas, and it pardons students from class on numerous Jewish holidays, but I don't think Islamic holidays are even acknowledged by the school (Leone). This, of course, is nothing but a an example of discrimination, based on religion, which is as bad as racial discrimination. The racism in America is a like a rash: the more it gets scratched the more it itches. According to watchdogs of political correctness, it is found everywhere. No social institution is spared from it. The paranoia over this issue in America gains more and more momentum.

It seems like the more efforts are being put into eliminating racism, the more that this problem is becoming acute. Yet, the real institutionalized discrimination, based on religion, is allowed to continue on unchallenged. The solution to this problem can only be found after vicious right-wing hawks are removed from public offices, from where they impose their views upon people, despite the fact that the State and Church are separated in this country. This will show others that the American Constitution is still the most fundamental law in USA, and not the commandments of Jesus or Allah. Many sociologists suggest that it is only about 50 - 100 years before Christianity will become extinct, although it might take a bit longer for Islam.

Both of these religions are simply too outdated to effectively address peoples spiritual needs in the age of computers and genetically modified food. More and more students indulge in alternative spiritual activities, like New Age meditation and Yoga. I think that students should learn about the futility of classical religions on their own, as only this will guarantee that their transition from boy to men is going to be painless. For the students, who consider religion as the most important thing in their lives, I would recommend to pursue the carrier of priests by enrolling in appropriate theological colleges and universities. Still, for the biggest part of students, the religion is another comforting thing in life, therefore Im sure that theyll be able to survive, after being deprived from practicing it on campus. We need to pursue the idea of equality in all of our public institutions, since it is proclaimed an official U.

S. policy. Therefore, it is whether the equal religious opportunities provided for all students, or campus is being declared a religion free territory, which will equally apply to all, regardless of whether they are Christians, Muslims, Buddhists or others, who are being revealed the ultimate truth. Im in favor of the second scenario, because it is practically impossible to provide religious equality in universities. Imagine the situation when students will have the excuse not to attend lectures not just because of Christmas, but also because of Kwanzaa, Hanukah, Orthodox Christmas, Easter and Ramadan.

What if students also decide to honor numerous saints by spending time in church, instead of preparing for exams? There are 475 of holy days a year, in Catholic calendar alone. The religious diversity on campus is like a spice - its good for as long as there is not too much of it. Bibliography: Cox, J. Erasing Christianity. (2002). The Absurd Report.
