River Why Literary Analysis Symbolism is widely used by authors especially in fiction. The movement is opposite to Naturalism and Realism. Symbolism is based on spirituality, the imagination, and dreams. Its aim is to capture more absolute truths but the methods used are indirect; thats why authors that are considered to belong to the movement wrote in a highly metaphorical and suggestive manner, giving particular images or objects with symbolic meaning. Symbolism is hostile to plain, matter-of-fact description.

It masks ideals in a perceptible form. David James Duncan's novel The River Why is a great example of symbolism. It took characteristic themes of mysticism and otherworldliness. It is known that symbolism is characterized with creative use of arbitrary symbols as abstracted representations of concepts or objects. Different symbols are greatly used by the author with the purpose to pay more attention to feelings and emotions of main heroes. They help to reflect awakening interest in religion and spirituality of the young man.

As a contrast to "representationalism", symbolism uses not only direct symbols inside the text but also can represents symbols indirect with abstracts, with grammatical and syntactical means, allowing the broader interpretation of a carried meaning. Thats why symbolism can reject many norms in writing. It is evident that David Duncan uses the full spectrum of these means. At the first sight the story seems to be about fishing, or love, or even just the people and places.

But it is for sure that the idea is deeper and covers the answers on many questions, raised in the novel. It is not the story of Gus Orviston's life but more about metamorphoses that happened with him. With the purpose to strengthen main heros experience the author Introduces series of characters. Though they do not play the main role in the book but they mirror Gus emotions. Among them there are Gus father (a stuffy, well-known fly fishing author); his mother (a backwoods bait-fishing); Thomas Bigeater (a sage old Warm Springs Indian); self-styled philosopher; Eddy (a divinely beautiful and enigmatic fisher-woman) and, certainly, his own younger brother Billy Bob. Gus Orviston has been living his "ideal schedule" spending everyday fishing since his childhood.

He regards fishing as the panacea from all troubles and worries. He does not know another way out. But soon he feels discontented. He needs a transformation. It is a difficult ways but Gus is lucky. He is accompanied by bright characters.

Those characters wake something up in Gus and make him change his mind. From the very beginning David Duncan pays much attention to the river and fish which live in it. The river symbolizes the universe for Gus, the beginning and the end of the life. Fish is like people; live and die. Gus parents influence greatly his attitude towards the river. The normal foetus, she (mother) says, is no swimmer: it is not fish-, seal-, eel-, or even turtle like; it is an awkward alien in the liquid environment a groping land creature confused by its immersions and anxious to escape.

My brother, she says, was such a foetus. I was not. (Duncan, 5) Gus father compares with fish. He writes in his article to Field and Stream, in 1964, titled Gus the Fish, my first-born fish and fly fisherman to be. (Duncan, 6) But Gus brother was called rugby (Duncan, 23) by his mother. Those nicknames reviles boys inner world: Gus is like fish wild and desolated, while Billy like a bug is more realistic with unique spirituality and clear-eyed faith in everything. The author uses symbolic means introducing the whole family. He says that the father was called H 2 O though his full name was Henning Hale-Orviston; and according to H 2 O; Ma is a river (Duncan, 6).

Gus himself says, ... though observation of our family the truth of the symbology is apparent. (Duncan, 6) The main hero is a child of nature. He describes his feeling about fishing Thus it can be said that I was interested in this art not just from an early age, but from literally before any age at all; I felt the adrenalin rush as Ma set the hook to those steelhead, experienced her excitement as she played them, heard her satisfied grunts as she clubbed them, grew strong as she ate them. (Duncan, 15) Before I ever saw the light of day, my fate was inextricably entwined in the fates of my fellow aquatic creatures, fish. (Duncan, 15) I understand fish-thought... (Duncan, 15) In contrary, Billy is introduced as a person disinterest in the aquatic life. Cus says about Billy's attitude towards fishing... he neither likes nor dislikes that most Orvistonain of passions, Fishing (Duncan, 23) he knows nothing about it. (Duncan, 23) It should be pointed that the word Fish is started with the capital letter. The author shows how much Gus likes fishing and speaks about it with respect.

Gus and Billy are quite different. He says, we scarcely knew each other... he always was an inscrutable little fart. Perhaps not to know him is to know him well. Gus is, As young Mozart cared for nothing but keyboards, strings and wooding's, so I cared for nothing but lakes, rivers, streams and their denizens. (Duncan, 19) But Billy is described as My brother Bill Bob is a living refutation of those behavioral and genetic theories coming that man are largely determined by their blood kin and home environment (Duncan, 24) For Gus water is a symbol of re-birth and mirrors the depth of human soul. Billy has no feeling of it.

He was simply born with a prodigious ability to ignore things aquatic, which to a massive extent implies an ability to ignore his entire family. He has no water in his astrological chart... (Duncan, 23) Billy Bob is introduced as clean, healthy and happy a person as Ive ever had the good fortune to meet. This proves that a boy lives in accordance with his understanding of life and its processes. He has clear thoughts and simple desires. While Gus favorite thing is fishing, it is the only thing he likes to do; Billy has a lot of hobbies, he likes baseball, likes to eat, likes to talk himself likes TV, rockets, radio, fire trucks, and basketball when baseball season is over (Duncan, 24) Though Gus is more alike his parents, he is interested in the same thing but he has common features with Billy Bob. Their parents were...

both are hot-tempered, hyperactive, ambitious, loquacious and extremely loyal. (Duncan, 22) While brothers have different characters. My brother and I in contrast, are slow-moving, dispassionate, pacifistic, close-lipped, and not at all defensive of the family honor. (Duncan, 22) This alikeness helps them in future (in spite almost 10 years difference) to get along with each other and help each other. The author uses different means to show the difference of two brothers. Their names can tell the reader a lot of about the characters. When the main hero was born it was his mother who proposed to give him a simple pure name Gus; but his father was against it. He chose more manlike one Augustine.

When Billy was born the family balance of power had tipped so far to the matriarchal side (Duncan, 23) The mother chose the name for him and insisted on it. Ma decreed that their second son would be known both officially and familiarly not as William Robert, nor Willis Robin, . But just as plain old Bill Bob. (Duncan, 23) It goes without saying that the name of a person reflects his character. Gus has two different names: one plain and the other one ancient, not common used. Like his second name the young man is not an ordinary person. He has difficulties through the discipline of public schools (and the unique insanity of the Orviston household) until he turns 18.

He decides that the answer to his discontent is fishing and nothing but fishing. Fishing reflects his second nature; and it is like his fist name. Billy Bob has just the other attitude towards life. He has more balanced character and more plain aims in life. First time Gus understands that his brother is different from the whole family in his boyhood.

He describes one episode from his life. The father was giving him an instruction in the art of fly-tying; his mother was reading a book with little Billy. There was a special documentary on The Freshwater Fishes on TV. Suddenly, Gus noticed that Billy Bob was staring at something. It was a single, empty 7 -Up bottle. It was the only thing that attracted the boys attention, ...

that bottle may have been the sole object in that room not directly related to angling, and he located it (Duncan, 24) Gus understands, I was a water creature, he a land creature Hes never excited, surprised or ebullient, no is he ever bored, disappointed or depressed. (Duncan, 24) For Gus different people are like different kinds of fishes, analogies between students in public schools and smolts in rearing ponds, dancers in nightclubs and salmon on their spawning beds (Duncan, 17) The main hero makes a lesson from his childhood, lessons I was doomed to learn the hard way. (Duncan, 18). But for Billy Bob life is seemed to be like an easy and interesting path. He can control his feelings and emotions. It is Billy's one of the best features that Gus should be taught. As it was pointed earlier, The River Why is a book with a lot of rhetorical questions.

It provides a few answers, but the spirituality that Duncan espouses is for the most part a very individualistic variety. The author does not lead a reader to a specific moral code or give a formula to judge ones decisions. The main idea of the book is to open your own eyes, love the big questions of life and love and God, and to seek your own answers gleefully and passionately. The River Why is a story that gives a contemporary insight to the concerns and hopes of all creatures on our beautiful, watery planet.

It is about the universe search of every person for meaning, for love, and for the right way to live. The main character, Gus, changes throughout the book. In this book Gus is discovering what life really is and that the whole world does not revolve around fishing. Gus desolation drives him on a reluctant quest for self-discovery and meaning -- ultimately fruitful beyond his wildest dreams.

Unexpected companions along the way include Gus's precocious, water-phobic brother, Bill Bob. The River Why is a touching and powerful novel by an important voice in American fiction. Bibliography: David J. , Duncan. The River Why. Sierra Club Books. 1983.
