Race And Justice in Othello and A Raisin In The Sun Literature is a great invention of humanity. It has given so many masterpieces to the world, has taught people so many lessons, and has proved its ability to show many sides of one issue. A good example of how different playwrights treat subjects differently is Othello and A Raising in the Sun. Both of these plays talk much about the issue of race and justice, but each one of them shows a different attitude towards the problem. Because the plays focus is the struggle of a man, Walter Lee, to find and sustain his own sense of self-respect, and because of its timely attention to racial inequity, Hansberrys provocative portrayal of women in A Raisin in the Sun is often overlooked.

The most memorable female character in the play, Mama, is in no way liberated or even questioning of stereotypes of women. But Mamas daughter, Beneatha, and her daughter-in-law, Ruth, are two of the most interesting women to appear in traditional American drama. The play has hardly begun before Walter Lee starts criticizing black women as a group and his wife in particular for their lack of support for black men. Annoyed at Ruths disinterest in his plans to invest in a liquor store, Walter erupts: Man say to his woman, I got me a dream His woman say, eat your eggs and go to work. Man say, Im choking to death baby!

And his woman say, Your eggs is getting cold. (Act I) Within the context of the first scene of the play, the strategy of this speech is to elicit empathy for Walter as opposed to the women who surround him. Even white men can laugh in harmony at the female focus on the mundane. The exchange can also be read as a larger indictment of the black womens culpability in the social creation of the impotent black male. Yet it is this same man who shortly reveals his unwillingness to acknowledge Ruths strength and anguish: the combination of the family's poverty and Walters narcissism have led Ruth to consider aborting the baby she is carrying, but even this news, conveyed to Walter by Mama, does not distract his focus from his own desires. Throughout the play it is Ruth who continues to work as a domestic in order to support her son, husband, mother-in-law and sister-in-law. Hansberrys assault on mens attitudes towards women and her belief in womens own perspicacity are even more evident in the scenes that focus on Beneatha, Walter Lees sister.

Beneatha wants to become a doctor; for her, the money the family is about to inherit is a down-payment on her medical-school tuition. Walters disdain for these plans and his blatant chauvinism are no secret in this household. Beneatha's entrance is greeted by Walters pronouncement that she is a horrible-looking chick at this hour, and he proceeds from there to demand why she could not just be a nurse like other women - or just get married and be quiet. Nor is Walter the only man in this world to make and assert such assumptions about womens roles. Even one of Beneatha's beaux, an African man, Asagai, refuses to believe that Beneatha wants anything more from her life than a conventional romance with a man. When Beneatha protests that there is more than one kind of feeling possible between a man and a woman, Asagai laughs his denial; when Beneatha then acknowledges his love for her but says it is not enough, he responds, For a woman, it should be enough.

As a document of both American social history and American theatrical history, A Raisin in the Sun is disturbingly prophetic. A Raisin in the Sun raises the curtain on the complex interaction between racism and sexism but it lowers it quickly, as if to warn the audience that such chaos lies on this terrain that more clearing of the land must occur before such territory can be encompassed on stage. Revenge, as a way to restore justice, as well as racism are constant themes throughout the play Othello. It is portrayed through the character Iago. Iago is determined to destroy Othello and his loved ones.

This retribution is a result of Othello promoting Cassio to the position of lieutenant. The theme of revenge is the motivation of Iago's hatred toward Othello. In the beginning of the play, Iago feels betrayed by his good friend, Othello. Through many years of loyalty and service Iago is [i]n personal suit to make [himself] [Othello's] lieutenant (39). When Othello has to choose his lieutenant, he appoints Cassio. Iago feels hurt and betrayed, and realizes there [is] no remedy (40) except for revenge in order to restore justice.

He... hate[s] the Moor... (63) and comes to the conclusion that... nothing can or shall content [his] soul [t]ill [he is] evened with [Othello]... (76). In an attempt for revenge, Iago publically humiliates Brabantio at Othello's expense. In the middle of the night, Iago calls outside Brabantio's house to inform him that his daughter, Desdemona has run away and eloped with Othello. Coming from two different backgrounds, Desdemona's father takes offense to their interracial marriage.

This demeans Othello and causes him to prove to Brabantio that he did not use any witchcraft or black magic to win Desdemona's heart. When Desdemona professes her true love for Othello, her father disowns her. Iago's first attempt to destroy Othello is successful, yet he still craves revenge. He devises a plan to destroy Othello. He wants to make Othello believe that Cassio is having an affair with his wife Desdemona. This will cause Othello to regret appointing Cassio as his lieutenant and simultaneously destroy Othello's life.

He knows that he must bring this monstrous birth to the worlds light (64) if he wants to avenge Othello's betrayal. Iago is successful in convincing Othello that his wife is unfaithful. Outraged, Othello murders Desdemona. Immediately after, Emilia, Iago's wife and Desdemona's mistress (156), explains to Othello that her husband has been lying to him and Desdemona had been faithful. Iago then murders Emilia.

Iago succeeds in destroying Othello's life as well as his own. In summation, Iago consumes his life with hatred and vengeance. Revenge is one of the main themes in this play. It drives Iago to do many irrational things and destroys Iago's friendship with Othello, the love Desdemona and Othello shared, and the trust between Cassio and Othello. The need for revenge is part of human nature, but if it is blown out of proportion, it can have devastating effects.
