Theorist Presentation of Dr. Jean Watson Jean Watson is a leading expert of caring science. She has gained international acclaim for her great contribution in nursing and caring science. Her works are translated into many languages of the world. She was born in West Virginia and spent her childhood there. There she was inspired to become a specialist of human caring From 1958 till 1961 Jean Watson studied at Lewis-Gale School of Nursing in Virginia and took the diploma in nursing.

Then in 1962 she entered University of Colorado and graduated it in 1973 as a Doctor. Her graduate study was Social and Clinical psychology. In 1973 she worked as a new faculty member the University Of Colorado School Of Nursing. She was always clinically involved as a nurse.

Jean Watson had practice in Med-Surg, Psychiatric and Mental Health nursing as well as a clinical nurse therapist. Later Watson tried her strength in teaching field. Dr. Watson teaches graduate students from around the world. She delivered speeches concerning with implementation of caring curricula in nursing educational programs. She consulted graduate students in transforming of nursing practice.

Dr. Watson considered the practice of caring is a central part of nursing. Taking into account Jean Watsons contribution into the science, New York University recognized her as a Distinguished Nurse Scholar. She was Distinguished Lecturer at many universities.

She went to different countries with lectures, and established international connections with colleagues. She was awarded several times for her works. In 1999, the Fetzer Institute honored her with the national Norman Cousins Award. While teaching at the University of Colorado between 1975 - 1979, Jean Watson developed the Theory of Human Caring.

She included her own views of nursing, her doctoral studies in social and educational-clinical psychology. Watson was firmly sure that life requires the experienced persons and created a framework called "creative factors." They provided a format and focus for nursing work. Ten creative factors appeared as a contrast to nursing's "trim. They gave deeper and larger explanation to nursing work than the "trim" of changing times, setting etc. Later Jean Watson gave another translation to creative factors, evolved her ideas and values, and wider way of their understanding. In the same year (1979) she spoke about seven assumptions concerning the science of caring.

They proposed interpersonal attitude towards caring while demonstrating and practicing. According to the assumptions caring should satisfy certain human needs. And the most important one said that caring offers the development of potential of a persons actions. Caring and curing has quite different meaning.

Caring pays attention not only on biophysical knowledge, but also human behavior. Dr. Watson considered that her works had not be treated as a specific theory, but should be estimated from a philosophical, ethical, intellectual point of view. Because of it, her works became a guide for educational curricula.

They are widely used in clinical practice models and methods for research and inquiry. She said that the central task of health education is to help students, practitioners learn how to form caring; because she was sure that it was not enough to cure the disease. The illness would remain. And without caring health necessary effect would not be reached. Jean Watson created conceptual models. According them, the goal of nursing is to help people in attainment of more self-knowledge and self control.

Health was presented as harmony between mind, body, and soul of a person. From the previous material, it becomes evident that moral dimension and broad ethical context were taken into account by Watson while creating Caring Science as biomedical science. It involved new fields and disciplines such as Ecology, Peace Studies, Philosophy etc. To the conclusion it is necessary to say that nursing is at its own cross road of possibilities. It requires not only new technologies but also new evolution in science. It is evident that in future all health care practitioners will work with a framework of caring relationships.

So, Watsons theory is of great value nowadays and for future generations. Bibliography: Balwinder, Chokaria. The World of Nursing Inquiry: Watsons theory of human science and human care, 2000. Watson, Jean. Nursing: Human science and human care. A theory of nursing.
