The tragedy of humans mind is in its suddenness and vulnerability despite a solid scull that covers it. The Shakespeares tragedy Hamlet is nothing but a vivid and indisputable evidence of the notion. How weak and unstable a young mans mind can be! But due to what circumstances and owing to what?

Stressful situation? Psychosis is what follows it. A psychotic has several symptoms the first of which is hallucinations. (A hallucination is when you see or hear something that is not a reality). After that comes paranoia, the constant feeling that someone is watching you or intrigues against you. Another symptom is when a psychotic has a tendency to ramble on and on during which his / her emotions change rapidly and adversely. Finally one may observe how psychotic is exposed to illusions of grandeur.

Poor Hamlet, hed rather escape from the dreadful prison of his tired mind sometimes being broken by tiny sparkles of bad dreams than live in constant anguish which gave birth to lunacy and hallucinations. So who is he? A highly intellectual and artistic figure or a madman, unrecognized prophet? Or maybe he is only half-distracted by his fathers death being logical enough to avenge for it? Hamlet is placed in Elsinore, a place saturated with treachery where poisoning and eavesdropping are the rule there. But he is strange to it, he is a humanist, a scholar.

Many passages in his speeches are in fact quotations from Erasmus, an author very popular in England in Shakespeare's time. Hamlet is the most intellectual of all Shakespeare's characters. And he remains the same during the play. He walks, he talks and receives guests most like a gentleman. His passion is for theatres and good players who later will become a tool of his revenge. He is a philosopher, an advanced specimen of his generation.

O God, I could be bounded in a nutshell and count myself king of infinite space, were it not that I have bad dreams. Being smart he presumes its not the whole kingdom hidden in the darkness of apparent world there should be something beyond the bounds of a nutshell. Who would accuse Hamlet, so educated and sensible, of insanity? The saying goes though: Madness is but one step away from genius. It all starts when we first see Hamlet plunged into the depth of despair: he is grieved by the death of his father, shocked and horrified by the inconstancy and immorality of his mother, filled with disgust and hatred for Claudius, and begins to be disgusted with life in general. It does impact the young mans mind Hamlet confesses more to himself than anyone else that he sees his father in his minds eye.

And here is an interesting fact he is not struck that much by the appearance of his fathers ghost as if he had expected it to be as an inevitable continuation of an unfinished matter. My father's spirit- in arms? All is not well. His friend Horatio constantly disposes Hamlet to the thought that he can see the figure of his dead father. Is it not just enough for weakened mind to be unveiled to any information which might be true orbit (who cares) but which brings some relief to ones broken heart? It all led him to believe the ghost virtually his own exhausted mind which has finally gave up to perceive the reality he used to see.

He recalls his prophetic thoughts he had about his uncles betrayal. He fancied it was Claudius who killed his father. And now this thought is fixed deep in his mind. To some extent being indecisive this aberration helps him much. It is not Hamlet now who wants revenge but fathers ghost that wanders restless. Only Hamlet can talk to the ghost and hear his answers, orders and moral teaching especially at times when he doubts or is in haste to accomplish the task given by his dead father.

Normal is what comprehensible and popular among people and it is insanity what can be seen and heard by only one person. Thus Hamlets mother says: Alas, how is't with you, That you do bend your eye on vacancy, And with th' en corporal air do hold discourse? Forth at your eyes your spirits wildly peep While Hamlet, staggered, stares into the distance and points out his finger into the emptiness calling out the name of his father. Alas hes mad that is the common verdict as no one wants to live and realize the verity of young mans words revealing truth and unmasking unseemly deeds of dastards and adulterers. His madness is disclosed again and again especially when he says eternal truth hidden from or forgotten by people, as truth is undesirable and bitter. Like John the Baptist he is unheard and misunderstood, like Jesus he is betrayed by his friends and alone.

Hes mad! Is he? That is not even aware of what he does and why? No. He has got a noble aim. Revenge which burns a young lads heart is tactical, his speech has sense whatever he says until reveals himself that he is a tool of fathers ghost who lusts for blood together with him.

Here Hamlet wants to know hes not alone. He starts convincing himself that fathers spirit is an honest ghost whom he can trust to. And thus we are more than sure hes quite out of his mind. He never gives up thinking there was no ghost at all but hallucination of his deeply disturbed poor mind. The conclusion that he once comes up to is that: The spirit that I have seen May be a devil; and the devil hath power T' assume a pleasing shape; yea, and perhaps Prince Hamlet is still sure he saw something let it not be devil but better his fathers ghost. No, he never lets the thought in his mind that the ghost was simply a hallucination, an ill minds try and motive to get the things started to avenge.

The Dutch prince is consecutive and penetrating and smart whenever he is thinking of revenge as not the burning feeling but tactical act. He is not lunatic at all speaking with his friend Horatio in the presence of who he never disguises himself. He is prudent and reasonable though also depressed by life but hes no time for this, hes got a noble aim. For his Judas friends, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, he is half-lunatic, reserved though also gentle. But hes not crazy to see the traps his former friends made for him to find out what the real intentions are in his miserable mind. Or maybe its his miserable mind which forced him see conspiracy and hypocrisy in his friends words?

Hallucinations could be cured were he not born in ancient times Alas, his poor mind was lured by visions causing him commit the crimes.
