What if Benjamin Franklin didn't exist? Benjamin Franklin was by far one of the most important figures in the history of the United States. If Benjamin Franklin did not exist, our country could have been much different right now, moreover, it might have not actually gained its independence from Britain, and then contemporary world order as we know it would also have been different. Within the scope of this research, we will elaborate only on some contributions made by Benjamin Franklin that were so important to our history, that without them it would have been a history of a different country. Even those couple of instances is enough to illustrate that if Benjamin Franklin did not exist, we would be living in a completely different world right now.

When thinking of Benjamin Franklin, it is difficult to imagine any other man who has performed greater deeds for the United States. He was instrumental in the creation of the very document that led to the birth of our nation, the Articles of Confederation. Working behind those who were younger and more ambitious, he influenced and assisted the Founding Fathers who wrote such documents as the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States. He was an invaluable emissary to France, as he secured their aid in the colonies fight for freedom. Despite rarely taking center stage at any particular event, no other individual was more involved in the birth of our nation. Therefore, Benjamin Franklin was, overall, the most important Founding Father during Americas Revolution.

If Benjamin Franklin did not exist, the American Revolution itself might have been lost. As in many facets of life, Franklin was far ahead of his time. Consider his proposed Plan of Union. Presented at the Albany Congress of 1754, his plan tried to bring the thirteen colonies together in what he called one general government.

Under Franklins plan, each colony would send delegates to a Grand Council that could levy taxes, raise troops and regulate trade. That plan looks very similar to the model of our government right now. If Benjamin Franklin did not exist, the notorious American Democracy might have also been non existent. Despite the Congress passing of Franklins plan, neither the people of the colonies nor Great Britain paid much attention. In response to the peoples indifference, Franklin stated that, Everyone cries a union is absolutely necessary, but when it comes to the manner and of form of the union, they are perfectly distracted.

Years later, however, the Plan of Union would influence the Articles of Confederation, in spite of the fact that in its original form, Franklins plan would have been more effective than the Articles as it allowed for the government to levy taxes. For the most part, it was the lack of this ability to tax that led to the fall of the Articles, showing how Franklin was far ahead of his time. However, Franklins ideas were later on developed by the next generations of political figures in America, and our contemporary governmental order can be seem as a result of Benjamin Franklins activities and plans. If he did not exist, some other leader might have come up with a plan that would have looked appealing to the general public and the politicians, and, as a result, we might have received some totalitarian regime instead of our democratic government. Franklin further proved his farsightedness in the way he ran the fledgling colonial postal service. Under the direction of the Second Continental Congress, Franklin assumed the role of postmaster of the colonies.

As he had experience as deputy postmaster of the colonies for the British, he had many ideas for making the postal system better. He speeded up foreign deliveries by purchasing faster ships, while speeding up domestic service with more postal riders, and ordered them to ride day and night. These accomplishments seem bland when considered only as achievements in making an efficient postal service. But Franklin knew that a functioning democracy depends on the free exchange of ideas between the people, and at the time, the only method of exchanging ideas was through the mail.

Even the basic elements of government depend on mail to give orders, share orders and even to simply hand out paychecks. Without a capable mail system, a government fails to operate as it loses the ability to govern its people. Therefore, by creating something as seemingly unimportant as an efficient postal system, he in fact laid an important piece of groundwork for our new nation. The postal service is only one of the improvements implemented by Benjamin Franklin. If he did not exist, many of the vitally important things Americans enjoyed in the past could have come around much later, significantly decreasing the life quality of an average American. If Benjamin Franklin did not exist, the various fields of development in America might have been overlooked, which would have definitely had an impact on the status our country has right now.

To protect that groundwork from the British, the newfound United States would require help from France. The Continental Congress realized that the war was not going well, and thought that an alliance with France might mean the difference between victory and defeat. As they considered this endeavor extremely important, Franklin was sent to represent the United States in France, and at age 70, on perhaps the most important mission of his life. Franklin proved popular in France, but nevertheless, the French government was reluctant to ally themselves with the American colonies.

Waiting until after the American victory at Saratoga, Franklin proposed the Treaty of Alliance with France, and terms were quickly agreed upon. Franklin also arranged for the transportation of French soldiers and weapons to America, hastening their arrival, as well as making sure the French government would provide a steady cash flow to the colonies during the war. The impact of this work is immeasurable, as many historians believe that without this aid the Americans could not have defeated the British. Thus, if Benjamin Franklin did not exist, the war with the British, the very war that provided Americans as a nation with their own territory, would have been lost. The consequences of this are at least unpredictable, but maybe the concept of American would not have been around because of this. Benjamin Franklin devoted more than half of his life to public service, and these three separate accomplishments all help to prove how important he was to the founding of our nation.

Not just in one aspect of the process, though, like Thomas Jefferson who worked primarily on the Declaration of Independence, or any of the many other delegates to the Continental Congress who toiled principally on the government of the new country. Instead, Franklin proved that he was a jack-of-all-trades, yet a master of many, as he assisted in the creation of the United States through as many deeds as one could imagine. If Benjamin Franklin did not exist, America itself might have become something totally different. Not only it could have become a British territory, but also some sort of totalitarian regime that would have been nothing like our contemporary democracy.
